Cayce, S.C. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team earned its first BIG EAST Championship match win since 2017 with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Creighton in the tournament first round Thursday morning at Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
The ninth-seeded Pirates, whose last tournament win came in the 2017 quarterfinals against Georgetown, now advance to face top-seed UConn in the quarterfinals Friday morning at 9 a.m.
"We knew this was going to be a fight to the finish," said head coach James Enzler. "Creighton came out confident and clinched the doubles quickly. We talked before singles though about how many times we've been in that situation though and to just stay in the present going into singles. I'm so proud of this team for fighting every single point and grinding it out for the win. This will be something great to celebrate when the season is over, but now we put all our focus on tomorrow against UConn."
Seton Hall fell behind with a doubles point loss, but quickly rebounded with first set wins in four of the six singles battles, and all four ended up being winners.
Arabella Moen earned her first BIG EAST Tournament win, defeating Alem Cote in straight sets at the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-3, to even the team score at 1-1.
Tamsin Hart then gave the Pirates the lead with a solid 6-2, 6-1 victory over Philippa Roy in the No. 4 spot. She is now 8-2 at the No. 4 spot this spring.
Imogen Brooker won a BIG EAST Tournament match for the second year in a row as she overcame a 4-1 deficit in the second set to ultimately beat Ana Paula Martinez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 position. She now has 19 overall singles wins this year, most by a Pirate since 2018-19.
Creighton won at Nos. 1 and 5 to even the team score at 3-3, bringing it all down to the No. 2 court, where Paige Wise was battling Valerie Negin. Wise took the first set, 6-4, but fell behind in the second set, 5-3. With the season on the line, she battled back and broke Negin's serve to tie the match at 5-5, lost her serve and then broke Negin again to even things up at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Wise coasted to a 7-0 win to take the second set, take her match and clinch victory for the Pirates.
Seton Hall will look for the upset Friday when it faces the Huskies at 9 a.m. Live results are available online.
