PREVIEW:
Seton Hall will return to action this week when it finishes the 2017 regular season with a three-game series in Hammond, La. against Southeastern Louisiana University. This series will run Thursday through Saturday. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

The Pirates are coming off a three-game sweep of Villanova in Plymouth Meeting last weekend. The Hall received strong pitching in all three games, and allowed only a single run. On Friday, the Ryan Ramiz had four hits and Chris Morris allowed only one run over five innings in the Pirates' 9-1 victory. On Sunday, Seton Hall swept a doubleheader utilizing a pair of complete-game shutouts. In game one, Cullen Dana kept Villanova off the scoreboard over seven innings in a 2-0 win. In game two, Zach Prendergast needed only 82 pitches to throw a no-hitter in The Hall's 1-0 win.

On Tuesday, Seton Hall fell to Monmouth, 7-2, in the 2017 Owen T. Carroll Field finale.

SERIES INFORMATION:
This will be the first series between Seton Hall and Southeastern Louisiana. The teams have met only one other time in history, earlier this season on March 4 as part of the Cox Diamond Invitational. The Lions routed Seton Hall, 13-1, as a six-run sixth inning put the game out of reach for the Pirates.

Seton Hall collected only three hits against SELU, with Ryan Ramiz reaching base a team-high two times with a single and a walk. Pirate starter Cullen Dana allowed three earned runs over 4.2 innings pitched. He struck out seven batters, but walked five. Three other Pirate relievers gave up runs as well. The Pirates scored their lone run on an RBI double in the ninth inning from Sebastiano Santorelli.

Southeastern Louisiana enters this weekend with an impressive 34-17 record. They are coming off an 11-3 loss at Southern Mississippi on Tuesday.

THINGS TO KNOW:
PIRATES FALL IN HOME FINALE

Seton Hall dropped its final 2017 game at Owen T. Carroll Field on Tuesday to Monmouth, 7-2. It's Seton Hall's first mid-week loss this season (8-1). The Pirates used 15 position players and eight pitchers in a tune-up for this coming weekend.

PRENDERGAST NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
For a second straight week, senior Zach Prendergast was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. Prendergast tossed a no-hitter in the series finale at Villanova on Sunday. In addition to his two Pitcher of the Week honors, he has been named to the Weekly Honor Roll twice this season. Furthermore, Prendergast was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week and the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week.

DANA, RAMIZ NET HONOR ROLL
Sophomore Cullen Dana and junior Ryan Ramiz were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Dana tossed a complete-game shutout of Villanova in a seven-inning game on Sunday, while Ramiz batted .600 and had nine hits over the four games last week.

NO-HITTER FOR PRENDERGAST
Senior Zach Prendergast needed only 82 pitches to no-hit Villanova in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday. Prendergast pitched to only one batter over the minimum, a hitter that reached on an error in the sixth inning. Additionally, Prendergast struck out a career-high 10 batters.

PIRATES SWEEP VILLANOVA
Seton Hall completed a sweep of their second BIG EAST opponent on Sunday. The Pirates defeated Villanova, 9-1, on Friday, and needed only two pitchers to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Hall won, 2-0, in game one, and 1-0, in game two.

PRENDERGAST ON A ROLL
Senior Zach Prendergast has saved his best stretch of starts for the end of his collegiate career. He has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back weeks and enters this weekend having not given up a run in his last 23 innings pitched. He has allowed only two earned runs over his last five starts and has lowered his ERA to 2.70.

SETON HALL CLINCHES BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
With a three-game sweep of Villanova, the Pirates clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament for a seventh consecutive season. The Pirates finished the BIG EAST portion of their schedule with a record of 10-8. It's the sixth time in the last seven years that The Hall has reached double-digits in wins.

PREMIERE PITCHING
Seton Hall's team earned run average is down to 3.29, and it's because of some excellent pitching as of late. The Pirates have recorded shutouts in four of their last six games. Furthermore, Seton Hall starters have pitched to a 0.60 ERA over Seton Hall's last 10 games... that's just four earned runs in 60 innings pitched.

CAPUTO, ALESCIO APPROACHING MILESTONE
Senior Mike Caputo and junior Mike Alescio are approaching the 100-hit milestone for their careers. Caputo needs just two more hits to reach the mark, while Alescio needs just seven. Both Joe Poduslenko and Ryan Ramiz collected their 100th career hits earlier this season.

OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT
Seton Hall erupted for a season-high 18 hits and nine runs in a 9-1 victory at Villanova on Friday. Seven Pirates collected at least two hits, with junior Ryan Ramiz leading with way with four hits. In the game, the Pirates clubbed a season-high eight doubles, which is the most by any BIG EAST team this year.

BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2017 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep is scheduled for May 25-28, as Creighton University is set to host alongside the Conference at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, home of the NCAA College World Series. All-session tickets for the Championship are on sale through the BIG EAST Baseball Championship Central and through Creighton's ticket master site. All-session tickets are available for $45 and $35 in two different pricing levels. Additionally this year there will be a youth level all-session ticket available for $20 in the lower reserved section. Single-session tickets for both adult ($20/$10) and youth ($6) are available. College students with a valid student ID can purchase single-session tickets for $5.

PITCHING MATCH-UPS

Pirates lead 6-3 in the top of 7th. Not that important a series from a record standpoint. Decent test and can help their mindset going into next week's BigEast Tournament. Most important is that they can get sone type of offensive consistency this weekend.

Box Score

HAMMOND, LA. – The Seton Hall baseball team burst out for a season-high 16 runs on 15 hits in a 16-3 victory at Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday.

Four Pirates had at least three RBIs in a balanced offensive effort.

Southeastern Louisiana took a lead right away as Ryan Byers led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run off Seton Hall starter Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.).

Turning Point:
In the top of the second, the Seton Hall offense erupted for six runs as 10 men came to the plate. Senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) led off with a single. With one out, Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) walked and Sebastiano Santorelli (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled through the left side to load the bases. With two outs, Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) reached on an infield single, which scored Fortin with the tying run. Junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) followed with a double down the left field line to score two runs and give The Hall a 3-1 lead. Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) then connected on a three-run home run to extend the Pirates advantage to 6-1.

The Lions cut the Pirate lead to 6-3, in the bottom of the second, but the Pirates broke the game open with 10 runs over the last three innings of the contest. Morris and four relievers combined to keep Southeastern Louisiana off the scoreboard over the final seven innings.

Southeastern Louisiana had an RPI of 28 before we beat them. They dropped to 30 since. That is a very good baseball team. I hope we can sweep them.

Our RPI moved from 82 to 80.

But it's all academic, because we have no shot at an at large bid to the NCAA tournament. We need to win the Big East tournament for that. (If we had done well in the Big East, we might have had a shot at an at-large bid, i think.)

TOKE, PIRATES FALL SHORT AT SELU, 10-7
Story Links
Box Score

HAMMOND, LA. – Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached base five times, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell at Southeastern Louisiana, 10-7, on Friday.

Southeastern Louisiana got their offense started early and often, striking for three runs in the bottom of the second inning off Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.). In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions score two more runs off reliever Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.).

The Pirates threw both Prendergast and Dana, with limited work, to adequately prepare for next week's BIG EAST Championship in Omaha, Neb.

Down 7-0 in the top of the seventh inning, junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a two-out two-run home run to cut the deficit to 7-2.

After Southeastern Louisiana scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 10-2, the Pirates sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the eighth and scored five runs to make the game close. Junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) led off the inning with his first career home run. Later in the inning, senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) delivered a two-RBI pinch-hit double. But alas, the Pirates couldn't draw closer than 10-7.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Prendergast took the loss with three runs allowed over two innings.
  • Toke went 4-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a perfect third inning.
  • Dadona reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, a run scored and two RBIs.
  • Freshman Rick DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Senior Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Seton Hall left seven men on base, while Southeastern Louisiana left 10.
News & Notes:
  • With two hits today, Caputo has reached the 100-hit career milestone.
  • Prendergast's start today was the 39th of his career, which ranks fifth on the Seton Hall career starts list.
  • Toke has now hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games.
  • Dadona's home run is his second of the season, but the first that has cleared the home run fence.
  • It's the 24th time this season the Pirates have recorded at least 10 hits.
  • Seton Hall falls to 1-2 all-time against Southeastern Louisiana.

PIRATES SERIES FINALE AT SELU CANCELED
Story Links
HAMMOND, LA. – The final game of Seton Hall's series at Southeastern Louisiana has been canceled due to poor weather in the Hammond, La. area. The game will not be made up.

The rain came with the Pirates leading 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) led off the game with a triple to center field. Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) followed with an RBI ground out to the shortstop.

Junior Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) got the start for the Pirates and pitched a scoreless first inning.

Next Up:
Seton Hall will return to action on Thursday, May 25 in the opening round of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship. The Pirates will face either St. John's or Creighton in the opening round.

Now the real season starts for this year's team.

Tough call on who pitches that first game. Prendergast or Dana? I guess they have to see who finishes in first place during the BE Regular season? It' s probably a Must game scenario.

Looks like Creighton may be alloted first place with an 11-4 conference record over SJU who finished with a 13-5 record. The Creighton series with Butler was cancelled do to Lightnig in the Indy area. No time for make up series at this point. They'll have to look at that in the future.

So it looks like Seton Hall will face Creighton in their home ballpark opening day at the BigEast Conference in Omaha. SJU will take on Xavier.

SJU is the only team with a realistic chance at an at large bid to the NCAA's with a 40-9 record.
