NEWARK, N.J. – Graduate student Chaunce Jenkins (Newport News, Va.) scored a game-high 19 points to lift the Seton Hall men's basketball team to a 57-53 season-opening victory over Saint Peter's at the Prudential Center on Monday.
In a very physical, defense-minded affair, both teams showed season-opening rust, but the Pirates were able to grind out the victory late. Trailing 49-45, The Hall held the Peacocks without a field goal for the next 6:24 and were able to grab a 56-51 advantage with under two minutes to play. Saint Peter's had the ball, down only three, with 18 seconds left, but couldn't find the equalizer.
In his first game as a Pirate, Jenkins had 19 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the floor and was 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Junior Prince Aligbe (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 10 points and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.
How It Happened
Seton Hall began their season opener with a 10-6 advantage through the first eight minutes largely through strong defensive play, holding the Peacocks to 2-of-10 shooting from the floor. The game sat tied 14-14 with eight minutes left in the half, but the Pirates combined that trademark defense with strong rebounding to close the half on a 18-13 run. Entering half time, the Pirates led 32-27 off the back of Old Dominion transfer Chaunce Jenkins's team-leading 10 points, seven of which came during the end of half run.
Coming out of half, a 8-3 run by Saint Peter's tied the game at 38 after five minutes between the two New Jersey schools. The ensuing eight minutes evolved into a very physical clash with both teams combining for 21 fouls during that time span. A Saint Peter's three pointer from Jakai Sanders with 8:04 left on the clock would hand the Peacocks a 49-45 lead, their biggest of the game to that point.
As the final five minutes arrived, the physicality of the game began to take its toll with both teams in the double bonus. With 2:19 left, The Hall's offensive persistence paid dividends as the team took a 56-51. This Pirates comeback saw Chaunce Jenkins and Boston College transfer Prince Aligbe score 10 unanswered points and cause three Saint Peter's players to foul out
The Peacocks would find two points with a 1:40 left before having the opportunity to tie the game with 17 seconds left. After block from Yacine Toumi (Meudon, France) and a made free throw from Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.), the Pirates stifled the Peacocks final half court heave to secure the 57-53 victory,
