Newark, N.J. — Senior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals to pace the Seton Hall men's basketball team to a season-opening victory over Saint Peter's, 70-59, at Prudential Center.

The Pirates (1-0) saw strong second halves from seniors Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.), Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) and Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.), who combined to score 31 of The Hall's 44 points in the final 20 minutes.

How It Happened

After converting on a floater in the paint to tie the score at 5-5 before the under-16 media timeout in the first half, the Pirates went on a 7-0 run capped off by a second-chance layup by sophomore Jaquan Sanders (Queens, N.Y.) that gave The Hall its largest lead of the first half at 10-5. The Peacocks held a five-point lead of their own in the first 20 minutes as they led 27-22 with 1:52 to go before the half. A layup by Richmond and two made free throws by freshman Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.) trimmed the Pirates' deficit to one that made the halftime score 27-26.

A pair of Richmond free throws at the start of the second stanza gave Seton Hall a 28-27 advantage, its first lead since the 6:46 mark in the first half. The Pirates were holding on to a two-point lead following a traditional three-point play by Davis with 14:31 left but Saint Peter's wouldn't go away. The Peacocks would hit a three-pointer on their next possession and they held Seton Hall without a field goal for nearly five minutes that helped propel them to a six-point lead, 47-41 with 9:33 to go. Davis would stop the bleeding with a three-point basket on The Hall's next trip down the floor and head coach Shaheen Holloway followed it up with a timeout to regroup the Pirates for the home stretch.

Later, Addae-Wusu nailed a three-pointer to tie the score up at 47-47 and he came up with a steal on the other end that led to a Dawes layup, putting the Pirates back in front, 49-47, with under eight to play. Those baskets kicked off a 10-3 run that put the Pirates in front for good. A dunk by Davis with 1:14 left gave Seton Hall its largest lead of the game at 68-56.
