SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Seton Hall and Providence will renew its lengthy rivalry on Friday. The Pirates own a slim 21-18 lead in the all-time series. Last season, The Hall won their lone matchup, a five-set victory at Walsh Gym. Although the overall series is close, the Pirates have won 16 of the last 20 meetings.
Providence is coming off a 12-18 season in 2022, which included a 4-14 final mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Friars didn't qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament and finished their year with losses in five of their final six matches.
The Friars are returning seven players from last year's roster and have added seven newcomers. Highlighting the returning core are senior Sammie Ruggles and juniors Kayla Grant and Shaliyah Rhoden. Ruggles returns for her final year after she finished first on the team in assists (645) and tallied 286 digs. Grant started in all 30 games last season and led the Friars in hitting percentage (.319) and blocks (94).
Providence was picked to finish 10th in the 11-team BIG EAST this season according to the preseason coaches' poll. The Friars enter BIG EAST play with a 6-6 record overall. They opened the season with four straight losses, but then put together a five-match win streak, including a sweep of their home tournament. Most recently, Providence went 1-2 at the Boston College / Harvard Tournament, losing to the hosts, but sweeping Merrimack.
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT
Seton Hall and Connecticut will meet for the 35th time in history on Saturday. The Huskies own a 21-13 all-time series lead, but the Pirates have won the last two meetings. Last season, the teams met only once with The Hall winning in five sets in Walsh Gym.
Connecticut is coming off a 17-14 season in 2022, which included a solid 10-8 mark in BIG EAST play. The Huskies qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament, and defeated St. John's in five sets before falling to Marquette in the semifinals. Caylee Parker was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
This season, the Huskies brought in an underclassmen-heavy squad after losing seven seniors last season. Four freshmen and two transfers are new Huskies. The Huskies were picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST this year, according to the preseason coaches' show.
Connecticut enters the weekend with a 5-7 record overall, but it has played a strong non-conference schedule. The Huskies suffered defeats to some powers including Michigan State, Georgia, Hofstra and Florida State this year. Most recently, they went 1-2 at their own tournament. UConn was swept by Michigan State, defeated Binghamton in five sets, and was swept by Brown.
