CHICAGO, ILL. – To close out the weekend, the Seton Hall softball team (12-10, 5-1 BIG EAST) split the doubleheader against DePaul (11-13, 1-5 BIG EAST), 5-4 win in game one and a 5-3 loss in game two, at Cacciatore Stadium.

Game One
The Pirates opened the day with a bang when Katey Brennan drove the second pitch of the game over the centerfield wall to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Taylor Hill immediately drew a walk, leading Kelsey Carr to join the power party with a two-run home run that plated them both and put The Hall up 3-0. Despite the strong start, the Pirates offense began to stagger as DePaul's offense came alive. Through a multi-inning stretch of small-ball play, the Blue Demons drew the game even at 3-3 by the end of the fourth inning.

The Hall swiftly responded by loading the bases with a single out in the fifth inning. In the very next at-bat, Hannah Alexander hit into a fielder's choice that scored Brennan and put The Hall back in front 4-3. DePaul drew the game even once again in the bottom of the sixth after a lead-off walk came around to score. With both teams tied at 4-4, they entered the final frame looking to avoid extra innings in the first half of the doubleheader.

As the top of the Pirates' lineup went to the plate, the visitors had an ideal situation to break the tie. Things appeared to almost go awry when the Pirates had only one runner on first with two outs, but Olivia Gilbert saved the day for the Pirates. The team leader in RBI drove a double to deep centerfield, scoring the runner from first and putting The Hall up 5-4 with half an inning remaining. Kyra Kreuscher gave way to Carr in the circle as the Pirates looked to close out the opening game in seven innings. Despite allowing a one-out single, Carr retired the next two batters to help the Pirates collect the 5-4 victory.

Game Two
The Pirates struck first in the first inning when Carr doubled to score Brennan and put the Pirates up 1-0. Before the inning's end, Carr also came around to score on an Alexander single to put The Hall up 2-0. The two runs would not be enough, however, as DePaul's offense would open the game with its best offensive start of the series. A combination of walks, steals and an unfortunate error put DePaul up 3-2 at the end of the first inning.

The Blue Demons added to their lead in the bottom of the second, making it a 4-2 DePaul, when an error on the leadoff batter led to that runner scoring on a sacrifice fly before the inning's end. The Pirates reclaimed another run when Gilbert drove in Carr to make it a 4-3 deficit for the Pirates. The Pirates had multiple chances to draw the game even in the fourth inning, but an unsuccessful tag-up and a bases-loaded pop-up ended the Pirates rally and kept the game stalled at a 4-3 DePaul.

DePaul's final offense marking of the day came in the bottom of the fourth when a leadoff hitter scored on a two-out single, making it a 5-3 DePaul lead. Despite multiple chance, including getting a pair of runners on in the seventh, the Pirates could not secure the victory and fell 5-3 to close out the series.
