SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -Second-year head coachRick Staintonunveiled the complete 2015 Seton Hall women's soccer schedule on Friday afternoon, revealing a collection of 18 regular season matches, eight of which will see the Pirates take the field within the friendly confines of Owen T. Carroll Field.
In the second year of his tenure, Stainton's side will welcome 11 newcomers to the fold while returning 80 percent of its scoring, five of the six players who appeared in all 18 matches last season and a pair of goalkeepers that combined to record six clean sheets; matching the program's second-highest total in the last decade.
"When putting together the schedule, our focus was on it being competitive from the start," said Stainton. "Our goal is to consistently compete hard and through that, earn success. If you look at the schedule as a whole, every opponent except one finished above us in the final RPI rankings last fall. I believe that our roster has a great combination of experience, talent, and depth and we look forward to embracing each challenge together as a program."
In all, eight of the Pirates' 18 opponents next fall finished among the RPI top-100 in 2014. Two, in LaSalle (Atlantic-10) and Monmouth (MAAC) captured regular season conference crowns. The Explorers are also one of three NCAA Tournament participants along with reigning BIG EAST champions DePaul and longtime foe Georgetown that The Hall is set to clash with during the 2015 campaign.
Following exhibition outings at Delaware (Aug. 13) and against Iona (Aug. 16), Seton Hall will open with four consecutive matches away from home; a stretch led off by dates with William & Mary (Aug. 21) and hosts James Madison (Aug. 23) at the JMU Tournament to kick-off the new season. The Pirates will then travel to Philadelphia to take on LaSalle (Aug. 27) and Pennsylvania (Aug. 30) before returning home to host Duquesne in their home opener on September 4 (4:00 p.m.).
The matchup with the Dukes is the first of three-straight on Garden State soil as SHU will next visit Monmouth (Sept. 7) before taking on Saint Joseph's (Sept. 11) in its second of three non-conference appearances at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The final two non-league matches will see The Hall travel to take on a second Ivy League opponent in Cornell (Sept. 17) before welcoming Albany to South Orange on September 20 for the last test prior to conference play.
Stainton's squad is slated to head to the Big Apple for the BIG EAST opener, squaring off with St. John's on September 27. The Pirates will also travel to DePaul (Oct. 4), Xavier (Oct. 11) and Georgetown (Oct. 22) during the round-robin conference schedule while their five home dates include visits from Marquette (Oct. 1), Creighton (Oct. 8), Butler (Oct. 18), Providence (Oct. 25), and Villanova in the regular season finale on October 30 (7:00 p.m.).
The 2015 BIG EAST Tournament will again feature the top-six teams in the final league standings. The top two seeds will automatically advance to Omaha, Neb. where the semifinal and championship matches will be hosted by Creighton University over three days from November 6-8. The two quarterfinal matchups will take place at campus sites on November 3.
