Pitino to Xavier

Why does everyone love Pitino all of sudden? He got thrown out of Power Conference (Minnie). Totally in over his head there. I don't see it, and think X could of done a lot better.

He is only 42. He didn’t do great in Minn, but that’s a hard job in that league and he did make the dance a few times, etc. He’s rebounded from that by doing a really good job at New Mexico.

I’m not saying it’s a direct parallel, but McDermott who is almost 20 years older wasn’t near as good during his 4 year stint at a power school and he’s obviously been terrific at Creighton. When Creighton hired him, many would have scoffed at that b/c of how his 4 years at Iowa St transpired.

Have to assume Willard is Nova’s #1 right now. But they must have some wildcard. Could Jay return for one year?

Minnesota seems like a dumpster fire, so I can excuse his lack of performance there, but to your point his UNM team was VERY talented compared to that league. He didn’t need to do much coaching.

The Mountain West has had 10 NCAA tournament teams the past two years. The bottom part is very weak but we've had that in the BE as well.

Minnesota has been a tough place to coach going back some years now but they may have unrealistic expectatons.

Pitino had three 20-win seasons and made a pair of NCAAs in eight years. Before him, Tubby Smith won 20 games five times in six years and made three NCAAs winning two games the year he was fired.

Minnesota is a very tough gig. Niko Medved was pulled back to his alumni but I wonder what other schools sniffed around him the last 2 years. Guy can seriously coach but he's in for it up there.

Richard is a very good hire at X. And it makes the brief talk of Luke Murray getting a sniff there as pie-in-the-sky.
