We are all somewhat aware of the tortuous story of the incentives of Alex Rodriquez' contract with the New York Yankees. A few more homers and he is due big bucks. We are also told that for a number of reasons, the Yanks do not want to payout this money. Everybody is playing nice until he produces and this might be the calm before the storm. This dispute could very well end up in court with a settlement when AROD is old and gray.
So it may be in South Orange where we are talking big bucks as well. If I am a board member with a fiduciary responsibility to run the school and I'm aware of the downside of next year ( donations and ticket sales) should the coach be retained, I would still be damned if I would want to buyout his contract because he failed. But a contract is a contract, so what do you do? You wait him out.
If we are correct about Willard's emotional condition at season's end, it was beyond sad and desperate. He is said to be one unhappy hombre. He could very well want "out". However his father, his lawyer and his friends are counselling him to slow down and not do anything hasty. "You have a contract and you did not hold a gun to their heads. They committed to pay you so much money according to the terms of the contract. Make them pay ! "
Beyond the Board directing the A.D. to advise the coach that they were completely dissatisfied with his performance, I don't believe they should do anything else. They do not request the employee to negotiate a settlement because that puts the power in the employee's hands. Every day next season gets closer and closer and a dark, emotional nightmare promises to be on the horizon for Kevin Willard..
Does he have the strength to withstand the unknown or will he buckle? The Board, only concerned with the business aspects of the situation, can only count on the latter. Regrettably this may take awhile..
