Warriors expected to skip White House visit as NBA champions: report

Updated: Tuesday, June 13, 2017, 12:37 PM

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly not sticking to sports. According to CNBC's Josh Brown, the NBA champs have unanimously declined an invitation to President Donald Trump's White House, which should come as no surprise to those who have followed the left-leaning franchise the last few months.

However, ESPN's Darren Rovell reported Tuesday that the team has yet to make a decision.

"Today is all about celebrating our championship. We have not received an invitation to the White House, but will make those decisions when and if necessary," the Warriors said in a statement, per ESPN.

In April, many Patriots players, including Trump supporter Tom Brady, skipped the team's White House visit. New England was the first professional championship team to visit during Trump's presidency, and the depleted attendance made national news. More than two dozen Patriots players did not attend the ceremony, which were among the most popular events during sports nut Barack Obama's administration.

While the NFL tends to lean right, the NBA has mostly stood in opposition to Trump, going back to the 2016 campaign. Warriors coach Steve Kerr has been among the most vocal sports figures against the administration's policies, along with San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich and Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy. Some NBA players also boycotted Trump hotel properties during the season, and Warriors star Steph Curry has also been critical of the President.

When Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank called Trump an "asset" earlier this year, UA athlete Curry said, "I agree with that description, if you remove the 'et.'"

Kerr's comments have been even stronger and would make for an awkward meeting with Trump.

"My personal opinion is Bobby Knight's way smarter than Donald Trump," Kerr said in May. "Bobby Knight was brilliant in a lot of ways. So there was some real foundation in terms of knowing and coaching the game. But he was a bully, so … I think being a bully doesn't work today, or at least it doesn't work coaching. The modern coach has to be much more communicative, flexible, aware, conscientious, all those things.

"Frankly, I think it's why Trump couldn't be more ill-suited to be President, because he's a blowhard. You don't see some of the qualities you talk about, the resilience, the ability to communicate, the compassion. None of that. But in the old days, a lot of great coaches who maybe didn't have those, there was still a fiber there, whatever it was. To be a great leader, there have to be some qualities in there.

"Has anyone ever thought that Donald Trump was a great leader?"

While the Warriors are expected to decline Trump's invitation, the Clemson football team attended its championship ceremony at the White House this week.

"Nowadays everybody tries to make everything political," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "This isn't a political trip. This isn't a fundraiser for a certain party or candidate. This is a celebration of what our team achieved last year. It's been a national tradition for a long, long time."

The White House has regularly invited college and pro championship teams each year since Ronald Reagan was in office, but now that sports and politics have become so closely entwined, the Warriors are the first team expected to flat-out reject the invitation.

It remains to be seen if other teams follow suit.

Really sad state of affairs in our country these days. For example, I didn't agree with much of what George W. Bush did, but I would be honored to go to the White House if I were a member of a championship team and invited by him. It's about the office, not the person who holds it.

The Clemson coach has it right.

Many black Americans thinks lowly of Trump. The Warriors are a predominately black team and this is their way of protesting the presidency and the way they are being treated in this country. .

Personally, I have no problem with their actions.

I think you are missing it and for some reason making this about race. What you said is true but that didn't stop any team from visiting the white house before. It's 100% about the president and everyone knows it.

I would reword your post to read..
Many Americans (period) think lowly of Trump. The Warriors are predominately made up of Americans who think the president is a (paraphrasing the article) ass, bully, uncompassionate, horrible leader, blow hard, ill-suited to lead or be a president, unpresidential and don't wish to be associated with him.

So, what will the reaction be if the Office of the President does not invite this team to the seat of our government to celebrate their basketball victory - thereby "robbing" them of the opportunity to try to publicly embarrass DT?

Respectfully disagreed. This absolutely is about race. If you don't think that black America is petrified by what they see in the White House then I don't think you have your finger on the pulse of our country.

Sure, there are more than just one group of people unhappy with Trump and what he stands for. But the Warriors represent a single entity, not a cross section of Americans and they have every right to take whatever stand that they wish to take.

I wouldn't be surprised if all teams pro or college refuse to attend these events going forward or go near Washington DC. The town is full of phonies, Republicans and Democrats, from Trump to Pelosi, horrible bunch of people.

As the major pro sports have evolved into multi-billion dollar businesses, I also wonder if these phony PR photo-ops even make sense anymore. No one really cares unless there is a controversy anyway. Whether it was Trump or another sitting President, I would have no issue if they discontinued the custom. I would rather see our politicians work.

EDIT

Sorry but I am deleting this post.

Clearly this will become nothing more than a political debate between Trump and Clinton supporters and that does not belong on this site.

If you feel the need to take this discussion in the direction you have I have no problem with that. But please do so on the proper board. Life off the Ship.

Mike, I'm sure you posted this before you read my edit above.

Same response to you as to 400SOAVE. Please take this to the other board.

EDIT.

This is not a political debate. We have a specific board for that. Your comments are being edited.

Warriors stay home.

Again, keep this to sports. Any political comments will be edited and if they continue this thread will be transferred to the Life off the Ship board.

Last warning.

Edit

Just further proof of the decline of our society when those who disagree choose to snub rather than engage. Go to the WH and respectfully make your points with the President.

I say you go and tell Trump privately or respectfully in public of your disagreements.

Among the most ridiculous things you ever done.you express your views that it's all about race and you edit mine. #sad#pathetic. With apologies to "physician heal thyself"..."moderator edit thyself"

Warning? Go ahead and ban me

I'm not sure how one could have started this thread and expected it to not drive political commentary.
I give a long leash and then if a thread gets out of hand I state so. This was a BB sports story so I made the call. It then morphed into far more than that so I posted as I did. Don't see the big deal.

It's so easy to just sit back and pick your spots to criticize. Far harder to make tons of decisions day in and day out.

No, I pointed out the possible thought process of a BB team and their members.I never even hinted that I do or don't support the White House.

You went far deeper than that and clearly this thread would have dispensed with the sports angle and turned into a a political referendum if I didn't act as I did.

If you want to discuss the political side of the linked story you can do so on Life off the Ship.

BTW, where do you see a warning? I just made a request of our posters.

As for banning. Nice overreaction to my comments. Let's go a different way. If you don't like how the board is run then stop reading it!!!

I get that it's not easy to play forum police, but it was obvious that an article where people (who happen to be on an NBA team) are bashing a highly controversial president would lead to political comments.

I understand that. But it's a sports topic regarding basketball that played all day on ESPN. It was newsworthy here for that reason.

Yes, I thought eventually it might morph to more than that and when and if it did I would then ask (not warn) our readers to continue any conversation in that vein to a different and more appropriate board.

Don't see that as asking too much.

You wrote "last warning". And I have no problem with what's written. It's your hypocritical use of the edit feature. How absolutely ridiculous of you to edit out my comment that I thought the cast of Hamilton struck the right chord with Pence. Absolute on point and nonpolitical given the discussion of whether they should go or snub. and what was wrong with my rhetorical question as to what you would advise your kid to do? You light the inflammatory topic and chide us. #overbearing.

Apologizes. The words last warning were mixed in a long post and I didn't see them upon initial examination. Hard to remember every word I say as I post a ton of stuff daily.

As for your views. I am going to say this for the very last time. You have every right to feel as you do and to point out the facts as you believe them to be. But I made a choice that your post and others like it were taking this thread far off the sports course and eventually be one where I would have had to move it to a more appropiate board.

Call what I did a preemptive strike. Certainly not a decision worthy of someone expressing such anger.

Dan, I can understand your view, too bad you can't understand mine. Anger? Anger is some of the incredibly inflammatory things that are said here everyday and we're said in this thread. My labeling your actions ridiculous and hypocritical are not evidence of anger. No anger. Just disappointment with your red pen. But I do apologize for the tone. I strongly disagree with your editing in this thread. Peace be with you.

That's fair.

There is no way I can please everyone and being someone that can make right or wrong decisions as we all do in life comes with the territory

I have absolutely no problem with people disagreeing with me. But it's my job as the moderator here to run the site in the best way I see fit.

I believe I give our posters a ton of leeway which is evidenced by how few people have gotten banned here in the last 5 years or more.

Hopefully now we can all move forward and leave it at that.

All you pepole posting anti trump rhetoric. Give me one specific instance where you are worse off since trump has been president. Just one please

I will leave it up for a couple of hours so everyone who wants to respond will see it's transferred to the Off the Ship Board.
