SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team continued its hot start to the season by knocking off No. 24 Princeton, 71-64, on Thursday night at Walsh Gym. The Pirates (3-0) become the first team to record a victory against the Tigers (2-1) in the regular season since the final game of the 2013-14 season.
In front of a lively crowd of 1,130,
Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) led The Hall with 15 points and eight rebounds as four Pirates scored in double-figures for the third-straight game. Seton Hall held Princeton to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and 28.6 percent from 3-point range, marking the third-straight opponent held under 30 percent from distance. The Pirates also forced 17 turnovers and are +27 in turnover margin this season.
The Hall once again jumped out fast, taking a 20-12 lead after a quarter and a 39-28 advantage to halftime. The Tigers pulled as close as four in the second half thanks to runs of 9-0 and 11-0, but the Pirates did not trail and made crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the seven-point victory.
In support of Richardson-Smith,
Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) scored 16 points with six rebounds and
Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) scored 12 and dished out eight assists.
Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 11 points, including eight from the charity stripe, and
Jordan Mosley (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in eight points off the bench. Alex Wheatley led Princeton with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Turning Point
Princeton used an 11-0 run to pull within five at 59-54 with less than four minutes to play, before two key plays from Richardson. The graduate point guard found
Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) in the low block for a lay-in to go up seven, and on the next position drove to the basket herself and connected to put The Hall up 63-54. The Tigers were not able to get closer than six the rest of the way.
Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the result
"I thought that was one of the most physical, hard-fought games we've played in a long time. I'm proud of the way we found a way to beat a really, really good team."
