Pschologically Important Game tonight

Tonight’s first conference game is a very important one psychologically; win and it could act as a springboard for the upcoming games; lose and it could be very disappointing, etc. I am not saying if we lose, the season is over, etc. or, if we are victorious, we are going to win the conference championship, but it still is a game that we need to win. Tonight’s game is going to be very interesting to watch and to judge how we play on the road.

The following is not my personal prejudice but, is based on the way the team is playing, matchups, etc. The players want this game bad since Marquette beat us 2 out of 3 games including, knocking us out of the Big East Tournament last season. The players (especially Delgado) wanted the USF game and got it; now they want this game even more.

Marquette has a formidable front line in Henry Ellenson and Luke Fischer however, they are going against two of our best players in Delgado and Rodriguez and I think we will win that matchup with Sanogo providing good play off the bench. Additionally, our overall defense will play well against the Golden Eagles.

The game will be won on which backcourt tandem outplays the other, and we will also win that battle with Whitehead and especially Carrington playing strong and scoring.

In a total team effort, we win tonight’s game 77-71 in overtime. GO PIRATES!

We need to play smart. That is all it comes down to. In re-watching the Wichita State game, I was astonished at how many stupid plays we made. We would have blown WSU off the court if we had played more intelligently.

I agree that openers can set a tone. However, this is the Big East and you need to be mentally tough and have your sh-t together to get through this 18-game season grind successfully. Unfortunately all of our teams over the past 5 seasons have not had those winning attributes and have consequently folded like cheap suits despite starting very well at times.

If they win on the road in Marquette it's great for a young's team maturation. But if they lose, it's also a lesson of how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back at it instead of sulking.

A win tonight is great, but there will be many more grueling tests to come. Fragile pysches will shatter at some point anyway, winning tonight or not, as I tend to think if it's fragile, it's fragile.

I could not agree more Piratz, that we need to play with a high basketball IQ in all of our games. It goes without saying that we have to be mentally tough in all of our games, it's a long, non-forgiving season.

After last season's collapse I was not very excited for this season to start, I've now fallen back into the trap of high expectations. This game is as important for the teams psyche as the fans. A good start in the league and maybe the fan base comes out in greater numbers.

kniespolice, reading the comments on this board, the fans' psyche needs some solid reinforcement and wins will do that. Everything feeds off itself-just win.

As the game gets closer, I am looking forward to watching our team and how they perform. I have not had this feeling for a long time.

Remember how psychologically devastating the opener against ND was during the 2004-05 season? The notorious Colin Falls game. Now that was a fragile SHU team and one learning to play without Barrett. Lost a boatload of close games.

I remember, I do not think this is a mentality fragile team. We will learn more as this season progresses.

Why wouldn't Sanogo be starting? Did you spill the beans on something? lol
lineup should be pretty simple to me, IW, KC, DR, IS, AD

My mistake, Sanogo of course is starting. I guess I was thinking of Singh and burying some 3-pointers.

Based on the last few years I'm not sure one game will tell us much. I'm gonna wait and see how January goes.

Holy cow !!! Psychologically speaking makes me dizzy. Can't we just play defense and rebound and kick some ass??

Well, mission accomplished. We beat them mentally, physically, kinetically, spiritually, emphatically!
