Chicago, Ill. – The Seton Hall softball team gets back into BIG EAST play this weekend as it travels to Chicago for a three-game series against DePaul. The series kick off on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by the middle game on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on FloSoftball.

LAST TIME OUT
The Hall swept a road doubleheader on Tuesday at Drexel, winning game one by a score of 14-1 before winning game two, 6-2. The Pirates clubbed three home runs in the first game, including Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) first career long ball in the second inning. Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) also left the yard to continue her torrid pace at the plate. In game two, the Pirates used two separate three-run innings to capture the win, and Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) pitched three scoreless innings in relief for her second career save.

SCOUTING DEPAUL (12-21, 4-8 BIG EAST)
  • The Blue Demons were the preseason pick to win the BIG EAST, however they have struggled through the first half of conference play to the tune of a 4-8 league mark.
  • So far in conference action, DePaul has faced St. John's, Providence and Creighton. The Blue Demons took two of three from the Friars but lost two of three to both the Red Storm and Bluejays.
  • This will be DePaul's third consecutive BIG EAST home series. The Blue Demons are in the middle of a stretch in which they play 11 of 12 games at home.
  • Brooke Johnson and Anna Wohlers have paced the offense for DePaul so far in 2023. Johnson sports a team-best .385 average and 37 hits. Wohlers is just behind with a .375 clip and a team-best nine home runs and 29 RBI.
  • DePaul boasts an entirely new pitching staff from last year's squad that finished fourth in the league with a 16-8 conference record. Bella Nigey and Brenna Smith log the bulk of the innings for a staff that enters the weekend with a 6.04 team ERA.
  • DePaul has controlled the series history with Seton Hall, owning a 30-6 record against the Pirates. The Blue Demons swept a three-game series in South Orange in 2022, including a 2-1 win in a 13-inning marathon in game one. The Pirates are seeking their first win over DePaul since 2017.
NEWS & NOTES
  • The Pirates have a record of 18-3 over their last 21 games, the program's best stretch since 1999.
  • The team is on pace to surpass 30 wins for the first time since 2005, when the team won 34 games and won the program's most recent BIG EAST championship. A pair of wins this weekend would also give Seton Hall its most conference wins since 2005.
  • Seton Hall is looking to finish with an overall record above .500 for the first time since 2006, when it went 29-27.
  • The Pirates' 11-inning victory over Lehigh last Friday was the longest game for the Pirates since the 13-inning defeat to DePaul on April 8 of last season.
  • Abby Wingo is the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week and enters the weekend batting .402 on the season with hits in 21 of her last 22 games. Only two hitters in program history have batted above .400 for a season.
  • Since the Pirates' 18-3 stretch began, Wingo is batting .484 with four home runs, 18 RBI, 30 hits, 23 runs scored and an OPS of 1.295.
  • Wingo has reached base in each of the last 22 games. She also had a 14-game hitting streak earlier this season, which was tied for the second-longest in program history.
  • Kelsey Carr has had a resurgent year in the circle, owning a 1.64 ERA through 77 innings of work this season. No Seton Hall pitcher has posted an ERA under 2.00 since 2005.
  • Carr has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week twice this season, most recently on April 3. The honor came after Carr tossed 10 scoreless innings against St. John's as part of that series sweep.
  • Shelby Smith has also posted a terrific season in the circle, compiling at 2.36 ERA in 89 innings entering the weekend. Her 96 strikeouts leads the staff.
  • Smith picked up her 300th career strikeout on April 1 during her 10-strikeout performance. Smith became the seventh Pirate to achieve the milestone and the first since Reganne Camp in 2020.
  • Smith was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 27 for her two-way prowess at Creighton. She went 6-for-11 (.545) with two RBI at the plate while also firing a complete game victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. This is Smith's second BIG EAST honor of the season, as she was named Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 6.
  • Sydney Babik has emerged as the third starter on the pitching staff, holding a 3.78 ERA through 50 innings of work. Babik has especially been reliable as of late, posting five straight outings of two earned runs or fewer.
  • Erin Howard was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on April 3 after a strong run producing weekend against St. John's. In four games, she batted a team-best .556 (5-for-9) with six RBI. In the 10 games she has started this season, she has RBI's in five of them.
  • Olivia Gilbert has received consistent at-bats during her sophomore season and has made them count. Her .330 batting average and six home runs both rank second on the club, while her 29 RBI pace the team.
  • After appearing in just 18 games as a freshman in 2022, Gilbert has started all 38 games at first base this season.
  • Seton Hall's nine-run inning on March 15 against Manhattan was its most in one frame since a 10-run rally in the fifth inning against Army on March 6, 2020.
  • The Pirates' 3-2 win over Texas Tech on March 4 was the program's second ever win against a Big 12 opponent, and first since defeating Kansas, 3-2, on Feb. 17, 2008.
  • Wingo tallied her 100th career base hit on March 4 against Texas Tech.

  • In seven appearances against BIG EAST opponents this season, Carr has yet to allow more than two earned runs.
What's Next
The Pirates continue their series at DePaul on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.

Hall Softball Team win again by the score of 9-4. This one wasn't as easy as the first game of series. They are now 11-3 in conference and 28-12 Overall. Great chance to win 35-40 games this season. It's very difficult to gauge how good they really are compared to teams in other conferences. The bottom line is they are one of the top teams in The BigEast.

W: Smith, Shelby (10-5) L: POCHIE, Abbey (1-5)

Chicago, Ill – Three hits and three RBI from Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) and steady offensive and pitching efforts from Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) led the Pirates to a 9-4 victory over DePaul on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Pirates eight straight wins in BIG EAST play, the second-longest streak in program history.

How it Happened
Before Smith even took the circle, she spotted herself a lead. With a runner on base, Smith launched a two-run home run to center for her fourth long ball of the year and second in as many days.

The Hall would add another in the second, as Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) lined a single to left field to increase the lead to 3-0. DePaul would battle its way back, plating a run in the bottom of the second and a pair in the fifth to even the score at 3-3 heading to the sixth.

The Pirates' offense exploded for six runs over the final two innings to salt the game away. Two of those runs came on one swing in the sixth, as Allen connected on her second double of the game to score Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) to put the Pirates back ahead.

In the seventh, an infield single from Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) allowed Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) to come home from third to increase the Blue Demons' deficit to three. Later in the inning, an error in center on a ball hit by Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) allowed two runs to score to break the game open. Allen would follow that up with another RBI base hit to score Gilbert from second.

Notes & Numbers
  • The win if the fifth straight overall for the Pirates, who have also now won 20 of their last 23 games.

  • This was Allen's second three-hit game of the season, her first since March 3 at Texas Tech.
  • Allen has back-to-back multi-RBI games in this series, the first two multi-RBI games of her career.
  • Alexander and Carr each went 2-for-3 on the day, while Gilbert went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
What's Next
The Pirates will look for their third straight conference sweep on Sunday, with the series finale slated to begin at 1 p.m.

What a difference having the right coach makes for a program and the resuts this year for the softball team reflect that and everyone connected to the program can take pride in what they have accomplished with. , hopefully more to come. Great job coach Churchill.

Seton Hall sweeps Depaul with a hard fought 13-11 series finale. They led 7-0 but could not shake Depaul for the entire game. Fortunate to get that one. Sign of a good team. The weather was very windy and affected many plays.

On a strange note: The grand stand behind the 3rd base dugout are right against an elevated public transit train. Talk about limited space.

Same shared field as soccer. Makes OTC look like yankee stadium. But the softball infield at DePaul cuts into the soccer field

Chicago, Ill – Led by Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and her record-tying seven runs batted in, the Seton Hall softball team won its sixth straight game overall and their ninth straight BIG EAST game, 13-11, over DePaul on Sunday afternoon. The nine straight conference victories match the program record which was set back in 1999.

How it Happened
After a brief rain delay in the top of the second inning, the Pirates came back and went to work. Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) got the scoring started with a single to center, followed later by two runs scoring on a fielder's choice hit into by Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas). Two batters later with the bases loaded, Carr launched a long grand slam to center field to extend the lead to 7-0.

DePaul would battle its way back, scoring three times in the second and in the third to pull within one. The Blue Demons nearly had the tying run score in the third on a double, however Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) made a perfect relay throw from short left field to cut down the run at the plate.

The Pirates would cushion the lead in the fifth by adding four more runs. With runners at the corners, Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) slapped the ball to third and legged out an infield single to make it an 8-6 game. Later on, Carr stepped up with the bases loaded for the second time on the day. The junior nearly had her second grand slam of the game, as she launched a long fly ball off the left field fence to clear the bases.

The Blue Demons answered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs of their own to pull within two, but the Pirates would pull away in the seventh. Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) lined a single to center, and a misplay by the centerfielder allowed two runs to score to pad the lead.

Wingo's hit would prove to be important, as the Blue Demons brought two across on a two-run triple in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) would avoid any further damage, getting a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Notes & Numbers
  • Carr's seven RBI tie the program record for most RBI in a single-game, matching the mark set by Danielle DeStaso against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 8, 2013.
  • The Pirates have now won nine consecutive BIG EAST games, matching the program mark set back in 1999.
  • The grand slam by Carr was the second by a Pirate this season, the first since Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) hit one against Creighton on March 24.
  • Wingo went 2-for-4 on the day to extend her hitting streak to 10 and her on-base streak to 25. Wingo now has a base hit in 24 of her last 25 games.
  • The Pirates have scored eight runs or more in five of their last six games.
What's Next
The Pirates wrap up their ten-game road swing with a doubleheader at Marist on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.

Always nice to have a team besides basketball to follow. Although wish it was baseball. The Big East needs to find a better home for its olympic sports instead of FloSports. Costs way too much to even consider buying

The recruiting is definitely national !!
Softball teams in the Northeast go overboard with the national recruiting. That was a major problem with the old coach.

The reason being a school in the NE getting players from the West Coast is almost always getting third, fourth and even fifth tier players.

This region, contrary to what parents paying tons for lessons and club coaches think, doesn’t produce many strong high level players at all. But there are certainly some good ones, who if you recruit them (the old staff didn’t) can definitely help you win.

Look at the slugger from Little Falls. She was a late signing after the coaching change. They might not want her in the SEC or PAC 12, but she’s helped turn SHU into a contender in the Big East, which is what matters. They key is to have the right blend of players, and the team now seems to be developing that nicely.

We have three very nice pitchers. None of then are outstanding, but they provide quality depth, and for a northeastern team you can't ask for much more.

Taylor Hill from Passaic Valley H S was committed to Hartford college . When the school decided to drop D 1 sports the coach resigned and in a perfect storm we hired the coach Angie Hill and she brought T Hill with her .

If you look at the roster there is a good balance of local players with a lot of the talent coming from all over the country. They have three series left with two being home vs Villanova and Butler. They are in a very good position to finish second with an outside shot at first. The BigEast Tournament I believe is being held at UConn. So that gives them an advantage. Things are looking Very Promising with this Program.

Doesn’t the question come down to whether a West Coast third or fourth tier recruit is a better player then a Northeast first , second or even third tier player?

Because they almost always aren’t. Plus you are getting kids playing 3,000 miles from home in a totally different environment, which is always a risk.
