Lead singer of Soundgarden & Temple of the Dog, the defunct Audioslave and an accomplished solo artist in his own right.

I don't know what to say, as I'm completely taken aback by this. Rumors are apparently saying it may have been suicide, which seems to defy logic. And as far as I know he's been clean for years, but maybe not. Truly saddened & confused. By far the best voice of the 90's Seattle scene. An epic loss, and now the only "famous famous" voice of that era left is Eddie from PJ.

Rest in peace. Temple of the Dog one of my all time favorites.

Sad that the scene during the 80's and 90's was so infested with heavy drugs - and it almost seemed like a necessity for these lead men and women to use in order to deal with the pressures of sudden fame and being catapulted almost overnight into the national spotlight.

Cornell contributed so much to music as a whole and will certainly be remembered for his great accomplishments and hopefully not for his struggles and low points.

Yep, sad day! Was ripping Birth Ritual earlier. First Andy, then Kurt, then Layne and now Chris....last men standing along with Eddie are Mark and Mark. Mudhoney and Screaming Trees for life!
Try again. R.I.F.
Don't forget about Mark Arm and Mark Lanegan...their voices still alive and kicking. They always took a back seat to the others

Wow...this is crazy.

Detroit Police have confirmed to Varietythat Chris Cornell‘s death is being investigated as a possible suicide. They shared the following statement:

“At 12 a.m. [local time], we received a 911 call from the MGM Grand Casino Hotel. It appears as though a family friend was checking up on Cornell at his wife’s request. He went to hotel and discovered him unresponsive on the bathroom floor. Police made the location with EMS, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

At present our investigation is leaning toward the possibility of suicide, but we must wait for a medical report to determine the cause of death. At this time we cannot release too much information about what we observed in Cornell’s hotel room or what led us to this conclusion.”

Variety further report that a different police representative told them that Cornell was found with a ‘band’ around his neck at the time of his passing.

No I know...I love Lanegan and his extremely diverse output too. But they're not known to the larger mainstream crowd as much. Cornell, Eddie, Kurt, Layne...they're icons.

So does that mean Jerry Cantrell isn't alive??? While Layne was amazing, Jerry sang half the songs lol

Truly saddened when I heard this on the news this morning. Saw Soundgarden, Audioslave and Cornell as a solo act multiple times in concert. One of the best voices of our generation hands down. He had a four-octave vocal range that was just so powerful and spine-tingling to hear live.

Jerry is alive. They haven't come to snuff that rooster just yet.

Yep, I'll see myself out.

I saw Jerry Cantrell at Hammerstein the night after they announced Layne's death. I was a huge AIC fan and it was crazy that Jerry was playing in the area.

I feel lucky to have been in middle school and HS when the grunge era was blowing up. The day Kurt died was to my generation was what it was like when Lennon died.

Really sad to see another legend leave the Earth too soon.

He had great range in his voice. Gifted. Suffered from depression, the silent killer the effects many more than we realize. RIP.
