PirateCrew: Seton Hall Pirates Football & Basketball Recruiting
The definitive source for all PirateCrew news.
Sorry for the delay. Had issues posting the story.
Trove: Another well-recruited prospect looking at the Hall is DMV forward Caden Diggs. I think we’re up against Iowa, Oklahoma State, George Washington, Richmond and Old Dominion with all signs pointing toward Iowa being the favorite.
Rob: I haven’t heard much on him lately, but the last I heard it was going to be Iowa. It’s been months since I’ve heard anything on him so things could have changed.
Trove: It’s hard to be upset if that’s his ultimate choice. Being a 6’7 wing and seeing the Murray brothers get drafted from Iowa is a pretty good track record for what they can do for their forwards. Another 2024 guard I wanted to ask you about is Nate Guerengomba.
Rob: He’s a PSA guy and he plays at South Kent Prep. The thing with him is I was higher on him than his own coaches. He’s a solid kid, plus defender and is strong attacking the hoop. He was pretty darn good at Pangos, so I feel like he’s a kid that is only going to grow in the coming years. I know they’ve talked to him, and I believe they’ve offered, but I’m not 100% there. His offer list is certainly going to grow too, so it would make a lot of sense to me for Seton Hall to get in on him early because he’s a kid that I could see us talking very differently about this time next year just because of the steps forward he’s taking really showing flashes at PSA.
Trove: Thanks for the insight. Another PSA player that Seton Hall is recruiting, whose game I really like is Matthew Hodge. What do you think about his game and his recruitment? I believe Maryland and Marquette have been recruiting him pretty hard.
Rob: I really like Hodge a lot. I don’t know who the leader is there, but the three names I have heard with him are Seton Hall, Maryland and Marquette as well.
He had a really good summer too, so it will be interesting to see what, if anything, changes with his recruitment. I believe Seton Hall offered early, so hopefully that helps.
Trove: One of our assistant coaches, Ryan Whalen is a Jersey Shore guy and I believe his dad was a high school coach down there as well, so the connections run fairly deep. I think Hodge’s recruitment could be a real litmus test for Whalen as a recruiter.
Rob: I think he’s one where you can definitely be there in the end for. From the conversations I’ve had with Hodge, he’s a stretch forward and he wants to play there in college. He shoots it pretty well and he’s a competitor, he’s not afraid to mix it up on the glass and he can guard multiple positions.
Trove: Shifting gears to some of the prototypical bigs in the class – Seton Hall has been recruiting Stephen Emmanuel from Dream City Christian in Arizona and Godswill Eheriene from Long Island Lutheran.
Rob: When Godswill is healthy, he’s pretty darn good. He’s battled some injuries, which has stunted his development a little, but when he’s going, he’s one of the guys who is a force on the glass. He missed a big chunk of time last summer, but he’s been healthier this summer and starting to put his name on the map. People are starting to like him. He’s one of those old school back to the basket, power player types. You’d like him to be a better shooter at 6’9, but that could improve with more work.
I don’t really know what his recruitment is like or where it is because he would scale up a barbed wire fence to get away from doing an interview. He's been tough for me to track down, so I really only deal with his coach and don’t have a great idea on where he’s looking or who he’s even considering because every time I've tried to talk to him, he's found a backdoor of the gym and peaced out. Your guess is as good as mine with him.
Trove: That old school banger type definitely fits into the shot sort of profile or mold that Sha likes in his bigs. He’s not afraid to feed the post early and often to help open things up to get his guards going downhill.
Rob: That is probably why he likes Emmanuel , who I can’t say enough good things about. He knows what he is. He's not going to pull up for outside. He is a one of the best rim protectors in his class in my opinion. He has come a long way in the last year just as a rebounder, as a defender. He's got some agility, too. He's got some post game, so he’s not like a total banger. His face up game has come along in the last months as well, so I don't think he’s scratched the surface yet. I really do think he's one of these kids that is going to get better and better and better. He’s another one of those guys that we could be talking about a lot differently next year.
Trove: Another assistant Rasheen Davis has some Arizona connections, having coached at ASU under Bobby Hurley and landing Tubek from Dream City Christian. Emmanuel’s recruitment could prove to be a litmus test on him similarly to Hodge with Whalen.
Rob: His recruitment is really only starting to take off now. He was one that I didn't really know a ton about him. I'd seen him before because when you see a dude like that, he’s chiseled, you don’t forget him. He was good at Pangos this year and I think he was even better in July. He’s probably got some new offers since then, but I haven’t really tracked him recently for an update. In a class where everyone talks about Flory Bidunga and some of these dudes that are high level five-star options, I think Emmanuel has every bit of that upside, he’s just not quite as polished offensively yet as some of those dudes are.
Trove: That makes sense why Seton Hall is in on him. Those big five-star types like Eddie Griffin or Samuel Dalembert only come to the Hall every once in a blue moon. Another player I have heard Seton Hall has shown interest in is Terry Copeland, forward from nearby Bergen Catholic. Are you familiar with him or his game at all?
Rob: It’s been a while, but he’s a three-star guy. I don’t know who he is playing for currently because I haven’t seen or heard anything on him in a while. He was another PSA guy. He did some nice things when he was a sophomore there, he was one of those guys who could kind of thrive in the mid-range and was a pretty motivated defender and rebounder positionally. We moved him down [to three-stars] after being at the end of the top 150 because we’ve seen other guys that aren’t him. He’s kind of vanished, so he might be running with an independent this summer.
