Roy Williams Blasts Doug Gottlieb In Post-Game Press Conference

By: Ryan Phillips | 16 hours ago

Roy Williams is none-too-pleased with Doug Gottlieb. After North Carolina throttled Miami on Saturday, the 65-year-old coach had some choice words for the CBS college basketball analyst during his post-game press conference.

During the CBS pre-game show, Gottlieb claimed that Williams would retire after the season and that Hubert Davis would likely take over for North Carolina. Gottlieb later clarified that he wasn’t “reporting” that but that he believes it would make sense given Williams’ recent health issues:

There was no "report" on Roy. Simply stating his knees, vertigo,NCAA stuff make people think this could be his last year #UNC
— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) February 20, 2016

and yes, people in basketball think Roy might walk if they win the whole thing….this is not news to anyone in hoops
— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) February 20, 2016

Still, Williams clearly believed Gottlieb was “reporting” that he would retire. Here is a rundown of what Williams had to say after being asked about what Gottlieb said:

Roy rips Doug Gottlieb for saying before the game that Roy was retiring and that Hurbert Davis was taking over. (Something I missed.)

Roy says "that's not journalism." Called it "sinful" twice to say that. Says Gottlieb couldn't put his shorts on right at Oklahoma State.
— Andrew Carter (@_andrewcarter) February 20, 2016

That was among the more entertaining Roy rants. He came back to give it. Presser was over and he remembered he wanted to say it.

Roy to Gottlieb: "you have no freakin idea what you're talking about. The guy who said that couldn't put his damn pants on the right way …
— Andrew Carter (@_andrewcarter) February 20, 2016

At one point Roy starts mimicking the old fan chant toward Gottlieb: "shorts on backwards, shorts on backwards." Humorous.

Curious about the “pants on backwards” reference? The video below should help you out:

This may all be a big misunderstanding, but it’s clear Williams is not thrilled that Gottlieb is discussing his future plans.

Too bad, Roy. People are allowed to speculate.

I thought it was proven that UNC athletes were given unfair academic advantages and took fake classes yet NO punishment from NCAA???
What a joke.

Watching Williams from a distance it's clear to me that he's not handling the stress of coaching NC well.

I don't blame him for firing back.

Terrific coach and he's had a great run at UNC with those two National Championships. But the pending scandal is probably adding as much stress as whatever goes on the court. Didn't realize Roy was 65.

unc corruption is beyond men's hoops it includes many student athletes across many sports dating back to mid to late 90s

Coach imitating college student chants. That comes across great. I do not like Doug but Roy looked like a fool.

Roy is obviously used to the genuflection of ESPN's "reporters," and doesn't like when they don't just gulp down the self-serving narrative he chooses. Gottleib is a jerk, but give him credit for not giving this other phony jerk the kid-gloves treatment.

Breaking news - "reports" of retirement can affect recruiting. Some here even think if what's his name leaves after this season for whatever reason would affect, at least, the status of some of the current players. Gotlips loves to hear himself talk. He's very fortunate to be where he is today based on his history while a student at ND. Shush, don't start a rumor now.
