The Front Office with the help of Jerry and others are already working on next season's dinner.

I can tell you from experience that Jerry Carino and John Fanta emceed one of the very best and entertaining events I have attended in quite some time last year.

Sitting in the SHU section surrounded by so many of the all time great SHU players listening to their stories was a reason that the 3 hour dinner felt like Hallrox and I were there for about 10 minutes. It went by so fast.

I strongly urge our readers to attend next season.

 
Wonder if there will be any temptation to open up the upper tier of Pru Center given Saturday game. I say don’t do it although you wish we could without too much concern,

Depends how we’re looking coming into that game. It we’re 7-1 and enthusiasm is high, do it! If we’re 4-4 and those sections would be swamped with Rutgers fans then no dice.

If we think the game will draw sufficiently, why wouldn't we open it up? Other college teams play in large, pro-style venue and do not restrict attendance in their upper-tiers even when they play another team that will draw more fans, potentially.

Why would we give up a home advantage? Not a good idea.

If done smart, think opening curtain might make sense. For example, only open some upper sections, and stick to it, don't keep opening more sections if more demand. Package the Rutgers game in all partial season packages and run deals where if you buy like 2-3 other BE games you get discounted ticket to upper deck for Rutgers game. Like usual, give season tickets first shot, maybe giving a nicer discount for upper deck seats to Rutgers game. Obviously market it heavy to SHU fans as well.

So basically add, but control. So get extra revenue, extra hype, obviously would allow more Rutgers fans, but control it where additional should be skewed to SHU.

Yes, I get where you try to control it through season ticket sales or packages of different types. That's smart business, because for some more casual fans, or even casual NJ sports fans, that's a game they might want to go to more than others. So if you play that level of interest into having to purchase 2 or 3 other games, it makes some sense.
 
Weak. Hall fans show up then. How would we like it if Nova or St Johns closed off the upper level because they thought Hall fans might travel well to the game.
Huge difference between closing a section that's normally open for just 1 game and opening a section that's normally closed for just 1 game.

I am interested in the event Dan mentioned. Sounded like a great time last year.

One of the many highlights was Ike Obiagu and Geo Baker good naturedly trash talking each other at the podium with both players predicting victories for their own team. Obiagu even went so far a predicting a 20 point SHU upset.

Right church, wrong pew. By 18 points.

For me, I'm far more interested in Big East games against our historical rivals or even some of the strong programs where we do not have that history (Creighton, X, Marquette). But like it or not the RU game draws strong interest from non-die hard Hall fans and even more casual sports fans -- interest we might not otherwise get. Why not try to capitalize on that environment? Even if it means we get some RU fans in the building up-top.

I will vouch for this as I sat with Dan and his better 2/3s :).

Harty9 brought Glenn Mosley as his guest and just about every former player in the room stopped at the table to speak to and pay tribute to Glenn.

Jerry and John as hosts were engaging and the panel members equally so. In fact, Dan Callandrillo spent about an hour after the event -- both inside and then in the parking lot -- sharing stories with a handful of us including The Front Office crew. On top of that, the food was excellent.
 
The only negative was that John Morton was sick and had to bow out. Haven't seen John in about 5 years. Always my favorite SHU player. Just a great guy on and off the court.

Hopefully he'll be one of the SHU players in attendance this coming Dec.

He's the reason I started really rooting for Seton Hall. I was young, and he played at my Mom's high school. Seems trivial now in the grand scheme, but at that age it was the coolest thing in the world for me.

Absolutely not and I would somehow hold back tickets from ru and do some kind of promotion to season ticket holders to buy extra tickets at some type of discount. Last year at ru to get ru /SHU game tickets you had to buy a package of some sort . %$#& ru GO PIRATES !!!!!!

Fans that come to 1 game every 2 years aren't worth all that much (financially / customer value speaking). Expanding the manifest to let them into that 1 game they want is easy enough, but short sighted. If that game is in such high demand, they should take advantage of that to leverage what little remaining inventory they have into season ticket packages. Use it to turn those Rutgers game only fans into season ticket holders.

Back when RU was in the Big East, my late friend Tom (known here as Pir8tes) used to buy tickets for at least a couple of games at the RAC besides the Seton Hall game.

He didn't want to buy just the one game (I'm not sure if they were selling mini-plans back then) and would pick, say, the UConn and Villanova game and root for his beloved Huskies and Wildcats.

Frankly, to me, there's little incentive to open sections upstairs unless there is enough demand to fill a significant portion of the area. Keep in mind in 15 years, we've only done so about a dozen times. Roughly half of those have been for Villanova and most of the others came in the 2019-20 season.
 
Rutgers started offering a sparse amount of tickets outside of its fan base to "pack the Rac" against SHU for an extreme home arena advantage. That’s why we should not open the upper tier to water down our home court advantage against them.
 
If you want to watch basketball in a pro style arena then go to an nba game. College basketball is about intimate environments. No school with 6k undergrads would play in a 19k seat arena unless they absolutely had no other option.

Despite what some people may believe seton hall has a small niche fanbase. 10,800 capacity is more than sufficient to meet the demand for seton hall basketball.

Speaking of the Front Office, they are another resource not being utilized enough for NIL. Pat and CJ are SHU grads and have done considerable work for Knight Society. I know they’d love to help out SHU but it takes two to tango.

That will be one of the questions we will ask him next month in our Trove interview.

I’ve seen quite a few people mention the idea of discounting the tickets and allow members to purchase additional. The challenge, often, when this is done is economics. There’s a lot of demand for a game like this. Tickets will go for a lot on the secondary market. If you’re sitting on extra tix that you got at a discount…guess where those tix end up? And guess who is most likely to buy them at a premium on the secondary market?

Your best bet is to price them appropriately and allow members to add on and to include this game in a package with Vilanova and St John’s. Call it the rivalry pack or something like that. Hold tickets back from the primary market and make season tickets or this pack the only way you can get access. You even have to be careful selling group tickets to a game like this because you can’t be sure who a group is rooting for. Georestricting won’t be effective because both schools are in NJ.

Or charge a premium for them in the Little Sisters of the Poor pack including Rutgers, St. Mary’s School for the Blind and St. Bernadette’s School for the Homeless. Why give Rutgers fans the opportunity to resell tickets to games against real schools at a premium price? Pair them up with like schools and force them to pay a major premium for seats in the worst locations.

You could certainly do that. The downside is that the prices for those games when bundled with Rutgers don’t really dissuade Rutgers fans from purchasing. When you bundle with your best games and charge a premium, you’re decreasing the risk of tickets reaching the secondary market. You’re also creating a compelling value proposition that even casual seton hall fans would respond to and you add them to your “escalator.” Todays 3 game packs become tomorrows season ticket members
