Maybe this is part of establishing the new normal poster child..Drugs,Homeless,No Bail required, and now Shoplifting becoming the dominant theme for Pelosi’s formerly great city.Nancy is safe in her gated community along with her designer ice cream.I guess things have to get worse before the guilt ridden,American hating far left concludes they have to correct this.

apparently they dont prosecute anything under $1000
Yes, probably one of the stupidest laws that has ever been passed. And addition to shoplifting cars are being broken into at a record pace. So stores pull out of the city and then the residents get fewer options and pay more. Brilliant.

i’m sorry, but the people that live there get what they deserve.

its so stupid. beyond common sense stupid that people dont even look at it with common sense.

According to the San Fran DA official, you guys are being racist for worrying about crime.

A once great American city
Now a 4th world city due to political correctness, corruption open southern border and Wokeness.
Sad cuz many other cities are crumbling for the same reason.

This is not correct. They do not charge anyone with a felony under $950”. Anything under a $950 is treated as a misdemeanor. They do get charged. Just not as a felony. So that would mean going to municipal court. This happens in NJ as well. Just not official positions

Now what the DA’s office is doing about second and third time
Offenders is probably the bigger issue. Also these smash and grabs are rings of organized crime which I hope they prosecuted harshly. Very had to tell being so far away. But it certainly seems, SF needs more police and harsher stances by the DA’s office on second and third time offenders.

Philly's DA doing the same - not prosecuting crimes under $1000 and the smash and grab thieves are having a field day. Carjacking at an all time high there too. What a mess! US is growing on many lists of countries not to travel to as well due to the increase in crime.

It’s one aspect of the WEF blueprint to bring down our country.

Speaking of Philly, Did you see this yet?
Horrendous!

Terrible but not surprising. Police have no one that has their back and the Dem liberal politicians are destroying so many cities. Sad.
Some of these major cities are in death spiral that will take years to turn around. Massive police retirements, bail reform laws, easing off of arresting and convicting criminals, migrants, drugs, homeless combined with businesses going to WFH, shuttering of retail, etc. Anyone who is suggesting that things are back to normal is just not being honest.

Again, this is not true. It’s not a free for all where shoplifting is not a crime. It is just not a felony. Even in Nj, while it is a 4th degree crime for shoplifting over $200, 3rd degree of over $500 and a second for over a $1000, a first or second time offender will likely be downgraded to municipal court in busy counties.

The smash and grabs are certainly over a $1000 And would be prosecuted as a felony so that is not the issue. something Else is going on. Security in stores do not try to intervene for one. Bail reform is certainly another issue which I think is a big factor.

brw, just came back from Chicago and had a great time in the City. For a city that gets such bad press, I saw one homeless guy.although I have to say deep dish is awful pizza.

Sorry you are wrong. I have a lot of family living in Philly and they have been in stores during the smash and grab and two relatives have been carjacked. They've spoken to the police and the police are told not to do anything because the prosecutor refuses to prosecute these crimes. Just last week my niece (32 yrs old) was in a 7-11 in Manayunk and four kids came in, tore the place apart and walked out with the trays of donuts, frozen items, food etc and the store manager just asked the customers to step aside and not do anything. They called the police and an officer was a block away and came during the melee and he stood outside and did nothing and asked the owner not to do anything or he could get arrested. The owner said this happens once a week at least. My nephew is also a Philly cop (10 yrs) and he is looking for work outside the city. He says they are powerless and the DA is destroying the city. They refuse to prosecute most crimes including car jackings. My niece was carjacked a few months ago and my aunt a few months before that. Very dangerous and they live in nice neighborhoods. Thankfully neither were hurt but it was close. They spent hours at the police station and the police were clear that there was not much hope that the criminals will be found and if they are they would be back on the street within hours. I feel bad for the cops and for the business owners and people that live there. They don't even report half the crimes now because they know nothing will happen.

And so far Chicago has only 397 murders this year. If that is progress I'm not sure we could agree on anything. Downtown Chicago is very nice but go to East and West Garfield Park and your opinion would be very different. Very bad parts of the city.

Add to this unreported crimes because people know that the police are not going to do anything about misdemeanors . You can have all the laws on the books, but if they are not enforced or the legal system doesn't deal with them, this is what you get. The ATV gangs in Philly also causing crime and quality of life issues.

Yes, the "I've been to Chicago and it's fine" is not reality based.

This is anecdotal. However, shoplifting is still a crime. It’s just not a felony. Now the question becomes is who is telling the street cop of not arresting. is the DA saying not to arrest or is it the police brass? From what you are saying, this sounds like the police are not arresting because it is no longer a felony and that is not only a wrong policy, they are not doing their job.

However, it is an absolute myth that shoplifting has been decriminalized. Sounds like the mayor needs to rectify this issue and fast. If what you are saying is correct, this is unsustainable. And either the Police Chief needs to go or the DA. Not sure which one it it is.

When did I say it was not a crime? Never said that. Reading comprehension is a skill.
