Sanders Statement

I try to be considerate to those who have a deep respect for the flag. They may have served, or a family member or friend, and the tradition means something to them.

In this case, the host (SHU/Pru) is making a polite request. It would bother me, as talking during the anthem or disregarding any other request of the host. It’s common courtesy.

This is a message board. People are free to post their thoughts. I don’t take issue with something that touched a poster as he did ask the question in a innocuous way.

Take it as a moment of self reflected patriotism and don’t care about anyone else.

Not facing the flag is just as disrespectful as wearing a hood. Keep your eyes on the flag and you’ll be fine.

I think the keyword here is respect.

The national anthem is played to respect the many who have sacrificed to make this country what it has been.

The people who do not respect the national anthem have their rights defended, too. If they choose to exercise their right to wear a hood, that’s their choice. But, similarly, it is everyone else’s choice to decide whether they will respect a person who wears a hood or a hat during another’s moment of respect.

Candidly, I will pray that our country would grow in respect for our founding fathers’ principles.

Alas, I don’t think that respect is a virtue passed on in our schools —if in our families—-anymore.

“It is what it is”, but I can still stand where I stand.

Perhaps someone should at least mention this to Sha.

Respect breeds respect

This. It's yet another sign of a generation that does not have much respect.

It's sad that this behavior has become the norm and has now become accepted. Not a good move on Sanders part if he is looking for any kind of NIL money from fans.

Respect is suppose to be past on from generation to generation. My father served and was lucky to return. The pain and sacrifice he suffered I hope i past to my son. I’m afraid most parents are not remembering the past, some are trying to change it, and others cancel it. I cant blame Sanders for something he wasn’t taught. His parents are probably from a generation without history. Not even sure they teach American History in schools anyone, think they called it Global Studies. I’m sure most kids don’t even know why we sing the National Anthem.

I was in Florida a month ago. On my way back to the airport it was very interesting to listen a morning radio show talking about how far from literally fighting for our way of life. They were talking about something on the twitter with a new American from Cuba received his first paycheck and cried because he never saw so much money and then they compared it to some teenage kid complaining Starbucks asked him to work 40 hours in a week.

Much of the blame lies at the feet of parents. I'm amazed at some of the kids that we recruit out of college that never had a job in their life. Parents wonder why their kids can't adjust to real world situations.

I think that's a fair assessment of Sanders. He may not grasp the weight that many here feel with the anthem, especially those with family and friends who have served and were taught what it means like you and I experienced. Not sure what he experienced which makes him either ignorant to the rule or not want to respect the flag, but I hope he finds a way to feel the same respect you feel.

Fwiw, I never had "American history". Prior to attending Seton Hall, history was covered in "History" and "Social studies" for me.

How you comport yourself will mean something to those that do pay attention. Clearly some fans notice and have voiced their disappointment. I agree that Sanders may not even know, but what about the coaching staff and administration. The MBB represents the university and it's a good teaching moment.

And another poster raised the NIL implications. Something like this may effect someone's willingness to participate.

I remember driving my 13 or 14 year old son down to the Jersey shore on Memorial Day weekend. He had no interest in the reason we were celebrating Memorial Day and really could care less. I got so mad I pulled into a rest area on the GSP and gave him a fiery lecture for a half hour. I was so mad that he didn’t realize others gave their life for our freedom. Every kid in America, and I mean every kid should have to spend half a day at the Arlington cemetery. The endless acres of grave sites are why we stand. Feel bad for the kid, he has no clue others died for his freedom. That single point could change how he lives his own life. Could change the type of man he becomes.

Yes, 100%. When the announces says “all rise and remove your hats for the playing of our National Anthem” and he keeps his hat/hood on. That is disrespectful to our country.

He doesn’t get to many games. Probably forgot.
