That Seton Hall goes into a big offensive drought. I said after the Georgetown game that this concerns me. And now it happens twice. I don't understand why Willard sits Desi who is on fire for long periods of time. I am happy this is not a loss but there are some signs that I just don't like.

At least we got to the line against Georgetown. St. John's clogged us up and dominated the paint.

We stopped playing a bit. That's what happens at times up 19 to a one win team.

Ridiculous. Could've sabotaged everything. But we survived. I've sat through enough heartbreakers. Glad we won. Phew.

Quoting myself from another thread:

Desi barely played last fifteen minutes. Another poster said he pushed trainer in huddle. After that thought he was done for game no matter what. Another foul out brought him in under 2:00

I'm actually impressed with the win. Not based on pregame expectations but because how it transpired. Lose three front court players and then lead very late on the road, iffy free throw shooting and then needing to hit two after needing to force a turnover then getting a tough rebound after getting killed on boards in those situations all game, hitting another ft, disrupting sju final possession without fouling. Game we definitely would have lost in the past

Young team who hasn't been 'there' yet feeling the pressure.

That's why experience means so much. The closer they get to their goal the more intense the pressure. Teams like Nova have been there and know what to do in crunch time. We don't yet.

The Hall hasn't played many games this season when possessions in the last minute are critical.

Their bigs are tall and athletic. We got passive.

Desi took it to them because of his quickness and strength. The others did not.

Imo, no comparison. We played bad O all game long. No execution in first half just torrid shooting.

Sophomores. Says almost all that needs to be said

Decent point, but now they're nearly juniors so maybe instead of young you and I should be saying inexperienced at playing important Feb games.

Agree. They grow more each day. Their experiences are not that unusual in CBB. Senior laden teams so often have that intangible advantage. They are almost Jrs. Now let's hope they are all here for their Jr year.

We have built some very large leads on the road this year (won at Marquette by 20, up 22 at Creighton, up 13 at Providence, up 16 at G-Town and up 19 today). Nonetheless, we seem to get complacent, lose defensive intensity, stop running offense and then are forced to sweat it out. If we would have lost today, we would remember this game as long as we did the Depaul game from 2012. I hope the guys learn from this.

The inability to put teams away when we have totally dominated them for 15 to 20 minutes is worrisome. I think players become selfish and break into razzle-dazzle mode when they are up big. When you don't get into a rhythm as a team, you can crash and burn when the other team gets its mojo back

Jerry Carino noted this as a concern too. Need to put teams away when we have big leads. Delgado took three shots in the game - I know he was in foul trouble but this is silly. He needs to touch the ball and the offense needs to be more fluid. Forwards need to make the extra pass. Nzei did this and Anthony got a dunk. When we share the ball and make the extra pass our offense is decent.

There were a lot of non-calls or shaky calls both ways. The biggest one went in our favor, so no skin off my back. While Mouvika (or whatever his name is) may have fouled Isiah reaching in, had we been on the other end of that call, I would have been screaming from my seats at the Garden, and I'm sure this board would have went nuts. SJU bigs get a lot of blocks because that is one of the few things that team does well. I saw some stat indicating that Yawke and Sima are one of the best shot blocking duos in the country right now.

The main something wrong was that they didn't get called for any contact as long as they touched the ball. More than 50% of their "blocks" we're fouls.

I agree Desi had a great game, but to be fair....Desi played 32 minutes per the box score. He sat about 4 minutes in the first half when Singh was in. That means he played 16 minutes in the second half...so it's inaccurate to say he 'barely played the last 15 minutes'.

Don't tell me Mullen can't coach. Maybe he's not drawing up offensive plays in the huddle during games, but he shut down IW by running different guy at him all game, always bigger guys, forced him left and constantly bumped, nicked and scrapped him all day. A testament to IW that he never lost his cool and was so clutch when he had to be.

The other thing Mullin did was run some pro offense stuff: when he got our guys into foul trouble they just isolated on that guy and went one on one.

One other thing, St Johns scored a lot of points in their comeback off of broken plays and scrambles that resulted in made 3 pointers. I thought our perimeter d was pretty good but once they got Angel out of the game they just took everything to the basket.

All that being said, we still won against a team that was feeling no pressure what-so -ever. Our guys really had to make big plays, Desi's offensive rebound and kick to Carrington who made the 12 footer with under a minute left--huge. Anybody thinks win this game last year?

The fifteen minutes was something a poster had asked about up thread from me when I wrote that. I hadn't tracked his time on the bench, just knew it was substantial, so repeated it in explaining the possible reason

Great commentary, well said.

If a player blocks a shot with his hand up top, but before the block he bumps the player with his body then it is a foul. The new rules state that a defensive player is not suppose to put his hands on the offensive player who is dribbling or making a move on the perimeter. How many times were the guards on our team, bumped, shoved, held and reached in on during this game. The whole 2nd half and 3 of our players fouled out.

According to many this was a poorly called game but an evenly called game. I didn't see it that way at all, agree with you entirely.

We get out to our leads when we run. When we have a 10+ point lead with 10-12 mins left in the game, we take the air out of the ball. Way too soon in my opinion. We still need to push the tempo until around that the 5-6 minute mark.
