Marquette 75, Seton Hal 54 (F) – Jan. 6, 2024 (Walsh Gymnasium)

AGAINST MARQUETTE

Seton Hall and Marquette will renew their rivalry on Jan. 15 in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles own a 20-11 all-time series lead and have won three in a row including a sweep of the home-and-home series last season. The Pirates have never won in Milwaukee, but are 3-0 on the road this season. Marquette is 8-1 at home.

SCOUTING MARQUETTE

Cara Consuegra will coach her first year at the helm at Marquette after spending 13 seasons at Charlotte. The Golden Eagles went 23-9 overall and tied for third in BIG EAST play with an 11-7 league mark. They made their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years but fell in the first round to Ole Miss. Marquette looks to fill the roles of its leading scorers, Liza Karlen, Jordan King, and Mackenzie Hare, from last year.

Heading into this season, Marquette was picked to finish 10th in the 11-team BIG EAST according to the conference’s coaches’ poll.

The Golden Eagles have exceeded expectations so far this year, finishing the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 8-3 record and winning three of their first five BIG EAST Conference contests. Marquette defeated both Butler and Villanova at home, and went to Chicago to rout DePaul by 19 points. The Golden Eagles have found a scoring lift from Skylar Forbes, whose 15.8 points per game currently ranks eighth-most in the BIG EAST. Lee Volker and Halle Vice are also averaging in double-figures in scoring.

Very good that game is on FS1 right after the Men's game..

So an opportunity for a chip was lost on Saturday against Creighton.. The good news is that they have no real bad losses. This is another chance to add a notch on their belt. Assuming 2 probable losses to UConn, this one is important.

I believe they get in trouble when the forwards don't get the ball to one of the guards. It creates forced plays and silly turnovers. Also, if Wright is reluctant to take threes, she should strive for midrange and foul line jumpers. All the gals need to shoot with more confidence in the first half. The turnovers and defending the three line are the key problem areas for the team. They play excellent interior defense most of the time. As others have pointed out the injuries limit their depth. Hopefully, Tony will have them back by the BE Tournament.
