After Steve Sauers left and I lost my contact on the staff I asked him if he had any suggestions regarding who I should contact. Without hesitation he mentioned Derm Player. Told me there is no coach on the team that cares more about the players than Derm.
Back then I didn't know Derm well. Obviously we talked at times but that was rare. With Steve's advise and knowing that Gonzo would not mind as he still saw Rivals as a means to posts positive information about his program I reached out to Derm Player.
Derm said he would have no problem talking to me if I had any questions but to be truthful at first, especially as I was used to Steve Sauers contacting me whenever needed reaching Derm was very difficult.
Fortunately as we got to know each other better that eventually changed and in his last two years at the Hall Derm and I (along with HallRox who loved Derm) became very good friends. Derm even spent time at our house a few times including stopping by the day after he was fired.
Every college team has at least one coach who has a reputation for getting down and dirty. Hey, no one is under any illusion that college recruiting is all sunshine and flowers. It's a rough business and at times you have work on the edge.
That was Derm's job. To find the diamonds in the rough and to then bring them to the Hall.
