What's your take?

Does the new 30 second shot clock

1. Help this year's team?

2. Hurt this year's team?

3. Not make a difference?

It benefits teams with the best coaches, since they will find a way to exploit a change faster and take advantage of others. We have the worst coach so it hurts us the most.

I believe that we have above average talent and thus it should be a positive, especially given that we will be a good defensive team. Clearly coaching is a huge question mark. Net, net the change is neutral or better for the Pirates.

I think it helps us big time.

Our offense has been very inefficient under Willard. Often weaving and bouncing the ball wasting countless time trying to get the D out of position. Taking 5 seconds off the clock will just mean 5 seconds less wasted time for us.

HOWEVER

On the other side of the court it will help teams that commit to defense. Since that is our stated goal and since as I have posted previously we have lost three of our poorest defenders from last year's roster I think it will benefit the Hall greatly.

Look for light pressure, M/M and zone in the backcourt to milk the shot clock down and then tight pressure D after that to force low quality shots.

More one on one offensively, which I think doesn't hurt Seton Hall offensively, but defensively, Seton Hall looks very foul prone, hence it may hurt defensively.

I'm not buying any better defensively hype until I actually see it.

I'm thinking that its impact will last during the non-conference schedule this year only - and only between mismatched teams - why - because the lesser capable team will be more easily rattled. But by January, I think in general most teams (all?) will have become used to the tempo involved. Perhaps something will turn up to the advantage of the defense or the offense, we'll have to see....

I think it hurts this team. We do not have a true PG play maker. We need the extra 5 seconds to get it over half court and set up a play. This will lead to Whitehead's tendency to try to make a move against multiple players and turning it over.

It benefits teams with lightening quick guard pg like Holloway or Barrett or even Theodore that can penetrate and go to the hole or pass to the open man when the defense collapses.

Until I see different, I see Whitehead as really a 2G that can come and play point at times. But not a real Point Guard. I think he will have problems bringing the ball up against pressure.

Why is what others believe called hype? Maybe it's just an opinion that differs from yours.
In the past the staff has promoted lots of ideas about our play and players that did not come to pass. So I can see why Steve would call it hype.

I don't think we're a good defensive team, especially in the front court. Shorter shot clock means we'll have to play defense less extended periods. That seems like a positive.

Offensively, it just means 5 seconds less of passing the ball around the perimeter. I could see it hurting Delgado getting some touches down low because Willard doesn't know how to set up a play.

When you look at this team's performance and record the last three years it's difficult to accept what the head coach says about how the team will perform either offensively or defensively because we've heard it before and it hasn't happened yet.

It's not hype if Willard simply answers a question at an event. After all the man hasn't given a single interview since the season concluded last March.

Kind of hard to hype anything when you are almost always behind closed doors.

I, more than he have made my opinion (not hype) felt regarding Willard's initial comment about defense.

BTW, never understood why Willard veered from his strength, which is defense. Always thought it was a mistake since it's pretty obvious that he has not been able to run an efficient offense in his 5 years here.

Agree 100% about the defensive. I think it's below average and don't care about how it looks in practice or scrimmages. Let me see it in Big East play.

This comment of yours speaks volumes about our head coach and the " bunker mentality" he appears to have embraced. You can't be a head coach in the BE and not be visible, accessible and constantly selling your program not only to players but to the HS and AAU coaching fraternity, the sports media, your fan base and the rest of the consistency that form the basis for running a successful program.

I think our defense will be much better. in the Backcourt we don't have slow footed Sina who opponents guards blew by. and Gibbs was no master at defense either. I think with the addition of Gordon as better defender with IW and KC our back court D should be much improved. In the Front Court again, with the addition of Anderson and Carter who have been mentioned as better defensive players that will help Delgado become a better defensive player and not have to play Matador. The 30 second shot clock will benefit SH because it will pick up the pace on Offense and not allow them to get into that stagnant offense. Run, Run Run...that's what these player like to do.

Because it's rooted in the comments of a head coach who is prone to stupid public comments to cover his own shortcomings.

Nothing that is said nor anything that occurs at practice means anything until they lace them up against real competition.

Past transgressions. Willard is guilty of many things but in this instance he is hyping nothing. He answered a simple question at a golf event.

With that answer and his comments made behind closed doors that were passed on to me I am the one bringing it to this board.

Needless piling on to a coach who has done enough other things to cause major concerns about his ability to run a high D1 program.

Willard's offense should be better if we have a legitimate point guard. I'm anxious to see if IW is up to the task. I think it's absurd that the last decent PG we had was JT.
