This is something more to the extreme right wing the last several years...is there really that much passion for Columbus and his Italian heritage here?

Yes in over 200 cities it’s been replaced by Indigenous Peoples Day. The left canceleled him and a number of other historical figures. People are sick of it.
There has been indigenous peoples celebration dating back to 1992...some here should know their history but people continue to post unhinged thoughtless matter that passes for nonsensical fad opinion

While it may have been a regionalized ethnic heritage celebration...it was not until the knights of columbis lobbied in the early 1930s and fdr acted on it. Lets not forget that he also had sympathy for italian migrants in the early to mid 40s after they went to internment camps. The modern day columbus day was first acknowledged in the 1970s after lbj signed it in the late 60s. You want italian heritage and culture go to the san Gennaro festival. Columbus was nothing more than a navigation mercenary and he and his people...european colonizers did not treat the indigenous of the Americas well.

Democrats need to pick their battles better.

Columbus day is really just a holiday for children to talk about an explorer coming to America, and for Italians to have a street fair.
No one else really cared about it until someone tried to say it we were celebrating native Americans being killed.

They could have had another day for indigenous people.

Columbus landing in Hispaniola was the single most significant event that shapes our world today. We cannot look back at 600 years and judge them. This is the fallacy of all this BS. Human nature is about conquering others. Most of the island of Hispaniola when it comes to death of the natives was done by disease, namely chicken pox, not slaughter. Although, the natives also gave the Spaniards syphillis to bring back to Europe.

Most of the indigenous tribes were a waring people. The Aztecs, for example, were a brutal tribe that killed many of their neighboring tribes in taxes and sacrifices. These neighboring tribes joined Cortez to fight the hated Aztecs. This BS narrative that the tribes were all peaceful and the Europeans just slaughtered them is wrong. Second, people conquered other people. Whether it was the Ottomans, the. Arabs, the Spanish or the English. How did the Aztecs, or Mohawks or Seminoles become dominant tribes? Well by conquering their neighboring tribes.

Btw, Columbus is not Italian. He is buried in Sevilla, Spain ( it is a pretty amazing site to see in person) and latest DNA tests show that he was Spanish and most likely Jewish. I have been saying this that he was not Italian for many years. Columbus ( Cristobal Colon) only communicated in Spanish, never Italian even to his own brother. That seemed to me awfully odd for an Italian.
