Seton Hall blocks key witness in clergy abuse probe ordered by cardinal

Former University president Nyre (aka the whistleblower to the whole situation) is the witness who is being blocked, for those who haven't read the article.

Nyre had been scheduled to speak with Ropes & Gray on May 9. But a lawyer for Seton Hall, Tom Scrivo, said in a letter to Nyre’s attorneys that “contractual obligations” blocked Nyre from sharing any confidential information he may have as a result of his employment as president.
...
“Cardinal Tobin said when announcing this investigation that it would be thorough and transparent,” said New Jersey state Sen. Andrew Zwicker, a Democrat who serves as vice-chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee. “And it is clear that they are doing the opposite in trying to stop former president Nyre from providing his input into the ongoing investigation. It is just mind-boggling and outrageous.”

my god. former president is key witness and gets blocked.

btw how can key witness just get blocked?

Does anyone really know the whole Nyre story? He could write a book.
Nyre has some real gripes against Seton Hall, Marino and the BORs. With that said, Nyre chose the nuclear route in airing his grievances publicly instead of settling (the BORs should have settled first and not let all of this see the light of day) and now his career is in trouble and he's doing everything he can to resurrect his image. He's a biased witness against anything Seton Hall and I believe still has an ongoing legal dispute with SHU, so I half get why the lawyers don't want him to be part of this. Hoping SHU is honest about everything else with this case and the truth comes out good or bad.

The BORs and Nyre should both be ashamed of their actions over the whole Nyre episode. Started with Kevin Marino and was made much worse by him as the process went on and his buddies on the BORs caved and sided with Marino whose actions were what started all of this. He was trying to protect his friends at the law school. Nyre had the right as President to prosecute the criminals and make it public and take more control over the law school and then Marino went ballistic and did some very unsavory things. The fact that the issue continues and is affecting other cases like this, proves they all made the wrong decisions and it should have settled a long time ago and it should have never gotten as far as it did. Just more really bad management by our BORs.

The last straw was we lost Katia Passerini in the process who would have been a tremendous President (she's the Pres of Gonzaga now).

I’ve noticed Politico has given this a lot of coverage, more so than any other major media outlet. Wonder if someone there has a bone to pick with Seton Hall.

Thanks so much for pulling it all together. I doubt anyone will refute anything you said! It’s really pathetic.

We have a new Pope who has been critical of the church’s handling of the sex abuse scandal and now is the time to assert his authority and sanction those who won’t follow their Cardinal orders.

Nyre disagreed with the BOR's cover-up. He had the guts to resign rather than go along. I disagree that the board should have settled. They should have done the right thing in the first place! Nyre is not stupid, I am sure he knew the potential to harm his career. I for one support Nyre's actions.

Putting a case together means getting all the relevant information from the key people in order to make an informed decision and Nyre is one of those. People.
Why not? This isn't a trial but an internal investigation.

Sounds like you are part of the coverup.
Article and statement from Cardinal Tobin reads as if he hired investigators to get to the bottom of the things at the University, investigators scheduled a meeting with Nyre with Tobin’s approval, and University attorneys moved against Tobin to try to stop Nyre from speaking to Tobin’s investigators. Wild!

Anyone know, is Tobin’s investigation linked to Seton Hall’s failure turn over evidence in the 450 victims case?
