What to Know About The Hall:

  • Sophomores Isaiah Whitehead (22) and Khadeen Carrington (20) combined for 42 points - including 25 in the second half - as The Hall pulled away from Georgia late in the second half of a 69-62 win Saturday at the Prudential Center. It was the first time that the two Brooklyn natives have scored 20+ points in the same game and the first of Carrington’s three career 20-point efforts that came in a contest in which Whitehead was active
  • Whitehead has led the Pirates in scoring in five of the first six games of his sophomore season, four of which have resulted in victories. The former McDonald’s All-American’s first career team-leading performance came in a 15-point showing in last season’s 58-54 win over George Washington, a game that also saw Whitehead dish out five assists. The Hall has posted a 6-2 record in eight non-conference games that Whitehead has finished as the team’s leading scorer since the beginning of last season
  • Sophomores Angel Delgado and Ismael Sanogo have formed a formidable duo down low as the two both rank among the BIG EAST leaders in rebounding. Sanogo has emerged to grab 50 rebounds in the first six games (8.3 rpg, fifth) while last year’s conference rebounding champion Delgado is once again right near the top of the list with 55 total boards (9.2 rpg, second) to this point. The prowess on the glass makes them the top rebounding pair in the league
  • The all-sophomore starting five of Carrington, Whitehead, Desi Rodriguez, Sanogo and Delgado has resulted in a 4-1 record through its first five outings and in 40:51 of action as a full unit, the sophomores have posted a +14 rating (75-61). As a group, the five have combined to account for 77 percent of the team’s scoring (340/441), over 74 percent of its rebounding (166/224) and 82.2 percent of its assists (65/79)
  • As part of the young core, Desi Rodriguez has transformed himself into one of the most complete players in the BIG EAST conference - currently standing 16th in scoring (13.2 ppg), and 12th in field goal percentage (.560) on the offensive end while leading all players in the top-12 with eight 3FGM on 47.1 percent shooting from downtown (sixth, BIG EAST) through six appearances. The Bronx native’s 11 steals are also second-best in the league (1.8 spg) behind Providence’s Kris Dunn
  • After starting all 100 games of his career prior to joining the Pirates for the 2015-16 campaign, senior Derrick Gordon has emerged as an integral force off the bench for The Hall. In five games as a reserve, Gordon has scored at least eight points in each contest and ranks fourth on the team overall with 10.2 ppg and second with 12 assists. In those five outings, the Plainfield native has accounted for 51 of the team’s 79 bench points (64.5 percent).

The Tip:

The Hall will bring a three-game winning streak into the nation’s capital on Wednesday night when the Pirates will visit George Washington in an early-season matchup featuring two teams off to auspicious starts.

Seton Hall (5-1) picked up its fifth victory of the season on Saturday as the backcourt tandem of Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way in a 69-62 win over Georgia that marked SHU’s second consecutive triumph over a Power 5 opponent after The Hall downed Ole Miss to close a 2-1 trip to the Gildan Charleston Classic.

Whitehead and Carrington both topped the 20-point mark while fellow sophomore Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) added 11 points in limited action. The second-year duo of Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) and Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) totaled 19 rebounds between them with Delgado hauling in 11 boards for his second-straight double-digit rebounding performance and the 18th of his career.

The Pirates will be making their first-ever trip to the Smith Center where George Washington (6-1) has won 18-straight non-conference games dating back to the 2012-13 season including an upset of then no. 6 Virginia earlier this year. The Colonials are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches Top-25 polls, as they were when Seton Hall scored a 58-54 win when the two sides squared off at the Prudential Center last season in what was the first meeting between the two programs since 1999.

Both Seton Hall (53) and George Washington (27) came in among the RPI Top-60 in the latest report issued by the NCAA, leaving no debate that there is plenty to play for in the district Wednesday night.

Pirate Points:

- Sophomores Isaiah Whitehead (22) and Khadeen Carrington (20) combined for 42 points - including 25 in the second half - as The Hall pulled away from Georgia late in the second half of a 69-62 win Saturday at the Prudential Center. It was the first time that the two Brooklyn natives have scored 20+ points in the same game and the first of Carrington’s three career 20-point efforts that came in a contest in which Whitehead was active

- Whitehead has led the Pirates in scoring in five of the first six games of his sophomore season, four of which have resulted in victories.

- Sophomores Angel Delgado and Ismael Sanogo have formed a formidable duo down low as the two both rank among the BIG EAST leaders in rebounding.

- Whitehead returned to the starting lineup against Georgia after leading the team with 17 points off the bench in the triumph over Ole Miss. The all-sophomore starting five of Carrington, Whitehead, Desi Rodriguez, Sanogo and Delgado has resulted in a 4-1 record through its first five outings and in 40:51 of action as a full unit, the sophomores have posted a +14 rating (75-61). As a group, the five have combined to account for 77 percent of the team’s scoring (340/441), over 74 percent of its rebounding (166/224) and 82.2 percent of its assists (65/79)

- The pace is significantly ahead of where the group was through six games as freshmen as they have combined for 152 more points (340/188), 54 more rebounds (166/112) and 24 more assists (65/41) when compared to the same point last season

- As part of the young core, Desi Rodriguez has transformed himself into one of the most complete players in the BIG EAST conference - currently standing 16th in scoring (13.2 ppg), and 12th in field goal percentage (.560) on the offensive end while leading all players in the top-12 with eight 3FGM on 47.1 percent shooting from downtown (sixth, BIG EAST) through six appearances. The Bronx native’s 11 steals are also second-best in the league (1.8 spg) behind Providence’s Kris Dunn

- The Hall enters Wednesday with consecutive wins over SEC opponents in Ole Miss and Georgia, marking the first time that the program has picked up victories over Power 5 opponents in back-to-back non-conference games since downing Tennessee and UCLA as part of the 1992 Preseason NIT. SHU has also recorded at least one victory over a Power 5 foe during the non-conference slate in all six seasons under head coach Kevin Willard

- After starting all 100 games of his career prior to joining the Pirates for the 2015-16 campaign, senior Derrick Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) has emerged as an integral force off the bench for The Hall. In five games as a reserve, Gordon has scored at least eight points in each contest and ranks fourth on the team overall with 10.2 ppg and second with 12 assists. In those five outings, the Plainfield native has accounted for 51 of the team’s 79 bench points (64.5 percent). Gordon also made a start in the victory over Ole Miss; tallying nine points in place of Whitehead who missed the second half against Bradley

- Creating high-percentage opportunities has been a key to the Pirates’ offensive efficiency in the early going as the team is averaging 35.3 points in the paint and has finished ahead or level with its opponent in the category in every game except the win over Wagner (WAG: 30, SHU: 28). The Hall has also forced its way to the charity stripe at a much higher rate than the opposition, posting 17.5 FTM/game while limiting its opponents to 10.8 free throws made per contest.

- SHU is in the midst of a stretch in which five of six games will be played away from home before the team closes non-conference play with four-straight at the Prudential Center. Seton Hall will take on in-state rival Rutgers on Saturday in Piscataway, looking to retain its hold on the Garden State Hardwood Classic trophy after winning the inaugural installment last season. The meetings with the Colonials and Scarlet Knights mark the Pirates’ first two true road games of the season after the squad went 2-1 to finish fifth at the Gildan Charleston Classic. Seton Hall is 6-4 in true non-conference road games over the last four seasons

- The Hall ranks behind only Villanova among BIG EAST teams in terms of scoring defense, surrendering just 65 points per contest. The lofty ranking is due in large part to the fact that SHU is once again clamping down on the perimeter, holding its opposition to 29.7 percent from downtown. The Pirates held opponents to a 30.0 percent connect rate from deep last season

Scouting George Washington

- George Washington is coming off its first loss of the season after winning six-straight to open the year; falling to then-no. 24 Cincinnati, 61-56, at Barclays Center Saturday

- The Colonials only got to the line twice against the Bearcats for a total of four FTA. Through its six wins, GW had sunk an average of 22.5 FTs/game and currently ranks fifth in the nation with 138 FTM for the season

- George Washington is pulling down an average of 40.7 rebounds per game behind the strength of three of the top-five rebounders in the Atlantic-10. Kevin Larsen and Tyler Cavanaugh are tied for second at 7.9 boards/game while point guard Joe McDonald is fifth at 6.9 rpg

- GW has won 18 consecutive non-conference home games dating back to the 2012-13 season with the last loss coming against Kansas State on December 8, 2012 (65-62)

- The Colonials have scored over 90 points in each of their last two home games - wins over Army (92-81, 11/22) and Gardner Webb (94-65, 11/24) and has topped the 80-point mark three times in four appearances at the Smith Center.

- GW’s 73 points in a five-point win over then-no. 6 Virginia (11/16) represent the lone time the team has been held under 80 points at home but mark the most points surrendered by the Cavaliers in a non-conference game since the 2013-14 campaign. UVa has held all but one of its other 16 non-league foes under 70 points over the last two seasons

- Guard Kethan Savage who led GW with 19 of the team’s 54 points against The Hall last season is now a member of the Butler Bulldogs
