Seton Hall took its place alone atop the Big East standings with a 74-70 road victory over Georgetown in front of a sparse crowd at Capital One Arena Tuesday evening.
The Pirates (11-5, 4-1) scored on their first possession of the game and led for the majority of the contest (36 minutes), but the rebuilding Hoyas (8-8, 1-4) hung around and chipped away, taking their first lead of the game, 63-62, on a putback off an offensive rebound with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
Georgetown extended the lead to three points on their next possession, 65-62, on a runner from Jayden Epps, who led all scorers with 30 points on 9/18 shooting, including 5/12 from three, as part of a 7-0 run with just over three minutes to go.
With its veteran experience and savvy, the Hall did not waver and regained the lead, 66-65, after senior guard Kadary Richmond drove the lane and converted with just under two minutes remaining.
Clinging on to a one-point lead, The Hall used steals by senior wing Dylan Addae-Wusu and Richmond on the next two Georgetown possession to help create some breathing room and cement their sixth
straight victory over the Hoyas.
Seton Hall was led by its three captains, who were the team’s only three players in double figures and combined for 77% of the teams scoring (57 points).
Al-Amir Dawes led the Pirates with 25 points on 5/7 shooting from long distance, while adding five rebounds and two assists. In his typical fashion, Richmond tallied 20 points on 9/13 shooting from the
field to go along with eight rebounds, eight assists and two steals, while Dre Davis recorded 12 points, three rebounds and two assists.
Seton Hall jumped out to an 18-4 lead on a 14-0 run in the first six minutes of the game before extending it to a game-high 16-point lead, 24-8, after Davis dunked home a pass from Richmond with 11 minutes
and change remaining in the half.
The Pirates started the game 11/13 from the field and scored nine points off of turnovers, but Georgetown’s first-year Head Coach Ed Cooley implored his team to “play with some pride” during the
media timeout and they came back out and did just that, reeling off a 19-5 run capped by a reverse layup from Wayne Bristol Jr. to close the gap to 29-27.
Making his homecoming, freshman guard Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored five of his seven points on a layup and three pointer assisted by Dawes in the final minutes of the first half to give The
Hall a 39-31 advantage going into the break.
Seton Hall shot 72% from the field and 50% from three in the first half, but Georgetown got back into the game in the opening stanza by switching to a zone defense and turning over Seton Hall 12 times for 12 points. The Hoyas were unable to take a lead as they shot a paltry 3/18 from long range in the first half with Epps being the only player to convert from deep, shooting 3/8.
Georgetown nearly escaped with the home win after shooting 7/16 (43.8%) from long distance in the second half, but Seton Hall made its free throws down the stretch 10/12 (83.3%) to secure the victory.
For the game, Seton Hall shot 60% from the field and 46% from three, while outscoring Georgetown 36-18 in the paint.
Seton Hall returns to action in a second straight road tilt at Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 12 p.m.
