SECAUCAS, N.J. – Seton Hall's Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) was selected in the 18th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

McCarthy becomes the second Seton Hall player selected in the 2017 Draft, joining former teammates Zach Schellenger, who was selected in the sixth round by the Boston Red Sox. McCarthy was the 544th player selected in the draft and is the first Pirate chosen by the Cardinals since Chris Noonan was picked in 2004.

McCarthy has been a dominant force for Seton Hall since arriving in South Orange three years ago. The right-hander took the BIG EAST Conference by storm as a freshman, being named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team. McCarthy led the BIG EAST with a 2.19 earned run average and limited his opponents to a .222 batting average, fourth-best in the conference. Furthermore, McCarthy had the fewest runs, earned runs and walks allowed among starting pitchers in the BIG EAST. He finished his first campaign with the lowest ERA of a Seton Hall freshman starting pitcher since Jason Grill in 1995.

McCarthy again led the BIG EAST with a 2.38 earned run average as a sophomore and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. He made history on April 15 when he pitched the first perfect game in Seton Hall and BIG EAST history, needing just 88 pitches vs. LIU-Brooklyn. For his efforts, McCarthy was named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week and BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. Named to the ABCA All-Region Second Team, McCarthy also led the BIG EAST with 102.0 innings pitched and 84 strikeouts.

A two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, McCarthy had some difficulty early in his junior season, but finished the 2017 campaign without allowing a run over his last two starts. Earlier in the year, he didn't allow an earned run over 6.1 innings pitched against LIU-Brooklyn, and tossed five scoreless innings vs. Lehigh.
