This team is so far behind the other top teams in the conference and the gap is only growing. Drop to 2-7 in the conference tournament.
No SHU team suffered more from the new Big East than the baseball team. The old Big East gave them some cache (at least for a northeast team), the new Big East is generally a pretty weak baseball conference
Which makes the lack of success just in conference play even worse. The conference doesn't seem to effect Creighton or St. John's, Seton Hall just can't compete with either currently.
Actually we are very competitive with both. Unfortunately we've ended on the wrong side of some extremely tight games. I believe we were tied or had the lead in the majority of the games after 7 innings with those 2 teams. 3 regular season games with Creighton, every single one of them was a 1 run game. Creighton took 2 of the 3. 3 regular season games with SJU, 7 run loss, 7 run win, 2-1 loss. We are right with these teams. A little better execution here, a little better execution there, and we beat these teams.
Hard to win when your margin of error is so small. This team just cannot score against quality pitching. It's been their Achilles Hell all year.
It seems like years and years since we had a strong offensive team.
Sure pitching wins games. But you do have to score to win and we just can't seem to put up 'numbers'.
Phil Cundari, the associate head coach and pitching coach does a really good job in finding and recruiting pitchers to SH and then developes them once they're here. Our recruiting of position players who have strong offensive skills has fallen off in recent years . In fact the 2017 class includes at least 5 pitchers and one position player to date.It seems like years and years since we had a strong offensive team.
