In the first game X kicking SJU butt.

5-1 bottom 8.

However, SJU has runners on 2nd & 3rd no outs.

Yep. That's the squad with what seemed like 9 first team all conference players.

Game hasn't started yet.

Will it be Prendergast or Dana getting the start tonight?

Pirates don't score in top of first after LF drops fly ball and a walk after two were out.

No Hit Prendergast gets the start for SHU.

Pirates get a run off a throwing error in the top of the 6th. 2-1 Creighton in the middle 6th.

This team is so far behind the other top teams in the conference and the gap is only growing. Drop to 2-7 in the conference tournament.

Seton Hall lose to Creighton 4-1. Started the game with some nice defense, but that was about it. Lackluster performance at the plate.
Let's see what happens against SJU on Friday afternoon. Game lacked playoff intensity. Creighton was efficient certainly not a menacing club.

No SHU team suffered more from the new Big East than the baseball team. The old Big East gave them some cache (at least for a northeast team), the new Big East is generally a pretty weak baseball conference

Which makes the lack of success just in conference play even worse. The conference doesn't seem to effect Creighton or St. John's, Seton Hall just can't compete with either currently.

Box Score

OMAHA, NEB. – Senior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) allowed just three runs over 5.2 innings, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to top-seeded Creighton, 4-1, in the opening round of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship on Thursday.

The game was a pitchers' duel early on with both starters, Prendergast and Creighton's Rollie Lacy, pitching in and out of trouble. Seton Hall stranded two runners in the top of the first inning, and a double-play ended the top of the third with a runner on third base. In the bottom of the third inning, Creighton left the bases full, and stranded two runners in the fourth inning.

Turning Point:
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Prendergast allowed a two-run home run to Creighton's Clark Brinkman to break the scoreless tie.

The Pirates got a run back with in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached on an infield single. With two outs, Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit a chopper to short. The Creighton shortstop threw wide of first base and Toke came in to score the Pirates' first run.

Creighton added a pair of insurance runs with two out hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning and eighth innings.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Toke was the lone Pirate with multiple hits, going 2-or-4.
  • Seton Hall left six men on base, while Creighton left seven.
News & Notes:
  • Seton Hall falls to 34-39 all-time in the BIG EAST Championship.
  • The Pirates fall to 12-11 all-time in the opening round of the BIG EAST Championship.

Actually we are very competitive with both. Unfortunately we've ended on the wrong side of some extremely tight games. I believe we were tied or had the lead in the majority of the games after 7 innings with those 2 teams. 3 regular season games with Creighton, every single one of them was a 1 run game. Creighton took 2 of the 3. 3 regular season games with SJU, 7 run loss, 7 run win, 2-1 loss. We are right with these teams. A little better execution here, a little better execution there, and we beat these teams.

Seton Hall is 10-21 (.323%) against St. John's (6-8) and Creighton (4-13). SHU has won one series out of eight against those two. Maybe the games have been close but good teams don't coming up on the losing end a majority of the time.

Hard to win when your margin of error is so small. This team just cannot score against quality pitching. It's been their Achilles Hell all year.

SJU's Ed Blankmeyer ( former SHU player) out-recruits his brother in law Rob Shepard.
We have a nice program with good kids who graduate and do us proud.
Glory days way behind us it seems.
Shep is there for good and besides I don't think replacing him would matter.

This is the problem 100 percent. Let's see what happens in this upcoming game against SJU. Even Xavier have more polished hitters on their roster. You must have 1 or 2 guys in your lineup that will play on the next level. Double A or Triple A I'd say with an occasional major leaguer.

It seems like years and years since we had a strong offensive team.

Sure pitching wins games. But you do have to score to win and we just can't seem to put up 'numbers'.

One of the easiest measures of talent coming through is players drafted since so many players are drafted. There were 7 players taken in 2013 and 2014. Those players largely made up the 2011 championship team, and the 2012 3rd place and 2013 2nd place finish in the old (better) Big East. Since only 1 player drafted. In comparison St. John's has had 14 players drafted since 2013.

Phil Cundari, the associate head coach and pitching coach does a really good job in finding and recruiting pitchers to SH and then developes them once they're here. Our recruiting of position players who have strong offensive skills has fallen off in recent years . In fact the 2017 class includes at least 5 pitchers and one position player to date.
