SHU Women @ DePaul

Actually that will be next season.

When Tony was picked 5th in the league he told me at Big East Media Day that there was no way in Hell his team would finish in 5th place.

My bad. With several new players (frosh/transfers) and where they were picked preseason, I looked at it as a rebuilding year. Reloading might be a better description

No coach at Seton Hall has ever brought a program to national prominence this quickly. At least not since 1960.

This is how the big boys do it: Lose players to graduation- find a way to re-load- and continue competing at a high level right away.

This should have been a rebuilding year but Tony and staff continue to amaze.

I think we can all get used to 20+ win rebuilding seasons where we go to the NCAA's! I know I can!

Losing Tab, Tiff, Mosley, Powell and Kena after this season.

Team will also be smaller next year with Byrne at 6'1; Molyneau at 6'2"; Lundberg at 6'1" and Gordon at 6'4" . The incoming class has 4 guards and only 1 forward, Shadeen Samuels at 6'0". With Gordon our tallest player graduating next year adding size becomes not only crucial but a must.

But look how much we lost last year with Didi, Dashia, Chizzy and Janee. Everyone thought we'd have a big drop off this year, that we might have success but not quite at the same level as last year. Coach Bozzella seems to have a knack for finding the right pieces and having them all fit. We don't rebuild anymore, now we restock. Yes, next year we will certainly miss Tab, Tiff, Kena, Powell and Mosely but we have younger ladies learning from them who will be ready to step in and step up. In three years Coach will have three 20 win seasons with three trips to the post-season. I don't see him or his team letting up on that anytime soon,

And with a refubrished Walsh Gym on the drawing board- new seats I've heard- the place will be rocking.
A team to love without hesitation.

I have to throw in my obligatory "please remove the high school stage and replace that area with seats" plea.

You can easily put up a portable stage when needed. Bands on tour carry a stage and lights around in a truck and will leave one city and have it up the next night in another city. You can train students who will learn a valuable skill that may help them get a job.

Thank you.

Keep in mind that the 2016 recruiting class may be the overall best ever for SHU WBB. They have a couple of potential monsters.

Alert! Beware of the PC police. Better to have said "potentially great student athletes who will make all SH fans proud." lol

As 64 says a team to love!

I was thinking about the roll over to next year. Pat has the key info and we do have an amazing class coming in. If we get another great big into the mix soon it will just roll and roll.

We are setting a program. It is so exciting.

My hair stands up just thinking about this program and its future. I focus on the women much more than the men's team.

Too much crap with the men- pouty faces, playing time issues, a coach who makes bad decisions and never admits to them. Yeah, they'e having a nice season but who the hell knows what's next.

With Tony and his Pirates, you know. And that's why I'm all in and proud.

P.S. I think I stole the "team to love" line from Blue Pirate.

The 2016 class has little size in it with only one forward in 6'0 Shadeen Samuels , a first team NY State player. DePaul which always is a top conference team returns for next year 1 player At 6'5; 1 player at 6'4" ; 2 players at 6'3" and In their 2016 class they add top 100 PG Kelly Campbell from St.John Vianney and 4 star F Claire Mc Mahon at 6'2.

De Paul will be formidable with that kind of size. Good get for them -the kid from Vianney. Our own Kat Egan's H.S.

But this is great for the league. It's on the way up and we'll be a big part of that. So exciting going forward.

Bruno already set up his pipeline years ago. Anne gave us important parts, but Tony has used them well and is finally beginning to set up a pipeline. With Bozzella, we are NOT going to go back down to the bottom of league ever again. We may have down years, but this year is all about showing that he's succeeding with only ONE of the remaining parts from Anne Donovan. That is an outstanding achievement. Next year may or may not dip down.

My expectation is that we'll see 2017 recruits starting to sign in April. That should pretty much establish "program". And then it's a war for the top year in and year out.

80... You are right about front court size.

However, Blue and I have noted many times this year that all our guards are super talented (Powell is my favorite player mind you)... Powell and Richardson are just too small against many higher quality guards. 5'4 and 5'6... Look at DePaul's guards.

Now next year:
Starters: TT Smith 5'8 & Jackson 5'9
2016: Smith 5'8, Winters 5'11 and Snider 5'11, Samuels (starter at 3?) 6'0

The size of those guards/wings are similar to the size of DePaul's guards and wings.

I also remember hearing something about getting a Big for next year. But that news has been very quiet.

Going forward, a down year for the ladies will be a WNIT bid!

I think Tony is moving the program to the point of us reloading every year rather then having to find us having to rebuild. A key part of Tony's success has been the addition of transfers both the regular" sit out a year type " and the graduate senior " ready to play immediately " version and with both types we were able to add size which has been a key factor in our success. I believe both our top 2 Big targets committed elsewhere and with no ship available to give we aren't in a position to take a transfer or a HS player that has size . Why Tony didn't leave a ship open to be able to add a player with size was somewhat of a surprise to me given how important transfers have been for us and the fact that with the incoming class we will have 8 guards on next year's roster and we're well stocked at that position.

Right now - meaning - today:
  • We have no openings for the 2016-2017 class.
  • We have ONE opening for the 2017-2018 class
  • We will have FOUR openings for the 2018-2019 class (given the ONE is filled).
80 - the issue you note is - in my opinion, which is based on some things - driven by injuries. I thoroughly agree that a big is essential for that 2017-2018 class, and would have been really good for a freshman to get seasoning with Lubirdia as a senior, but it did not work out that way, and I think it is due to elements beyond control.

That said, we faced what looked like a dire situation in each of his years so far and he pulled rabbits out of the hat EACH TIME.

My expectation is that things will actually develop and work out (the dreaded phrase is used). With Tony, I will not have to lose a second's sleep over how things work out shall we say.

Remember. Gordon will be a senior next year. And Molyneaux and Byrne will only Sophomores. They can easily man the 4 and 5.

Also - just to clear up the roster discussion. We have NLI from Deja Winters, Skylar Snider, Tyeisha Smith and Shadeen Samuels as Pat mentioned above.

We have - to my knowledge today unless it slipped past my radar - verbals from Ali Fitzgerald and Nia Ahart.

Not sure what's up with Ali, she is a 2016 recruit who has attended our games this past season. Word is she's still coming here. Idk.

Ahart is a 2017 commit, correct?

And again, Ahart is 5'6... But every other guard/wing prospect is 5'8, 5'9, 5'11, 6'0... That's some much needed height being added to our backcourt.

Fitzgerald sent this Tweet on November 26:

ali fitzgerald ‏@alifitzgeraldd
when your mom cries bc you got accepted to college as if you didn't already know where you were going

DeFalco gave the Tweet a Like. Fitzgerald is in. I don't know why SHU has not officially made an announcement.

Fitzgerald IDs herself on her Twitter page as "Seton Hall WBB '20."

She could be the sleeper of the class. She's been a great shooter since 5th grade.

I believe that if any of these recruits had commited to UConn, Louisville or ND, they'd all have one more star next to their name.

They all have the potential to contribute right away. That, however, does not always happen.

Look at LaTecia Smith, an undoubtedly talented guard who hustles and works hard. I believe she will be ready for a lot more minutes next season. But it seems to me she needs time to develop her Xs & Os.

Some players have great skill, but perhaps did not receive the instruction they needed in high school. And as we have seen time after time, all willing Bozzella players significantly improve every season.

400 - great stuff. Is it possible that the timing of her situation was appropriate for a verbal, but the NLOI had to wait until the spring signing period? Until then, perhaps the school has to stay quiet (by rule, etc).

The other thing we need to strongly observe - Tony DEVELOPS players and the team as a whole. He's only getting better at it too.

Here's some numbers from MaxPreps about Ali thru her first 12 games this season:
10.7 PPG
50-136 FG's 37%
16-61 Three point shooting 26%
12-21 FT's 57%
2.3 APG
1.6 TO's PG
MaxPreps had her national ranking as 563.

The stats on another 2016 recruit , Shadeen Samuels our only front- court player in the 2016 class, from Ossning, NY show these numbers:
PPG. 24.0
RPG. 9.0
SPG 2.8
No other stats available such as APG, TO's shooting percentages.
MaxPrep had her national ranking at 244 but her NY State ranking at 2.

Good input and I know you understand how much a fan of Tony I am and the fact that I really believe he understands how to put a program together that will be consistently good . Your observation about how he's pulled rabbits out of the hat in the past is true but he did because he had the means to do so by always having a ship available that he could use which he had used to great success the past two years. I happen to be a believer in always leaving yourself room to make a move to add a piece that all of a sudden becomes available and when you have 15 ships to give in WBB there's plenty of room to keep one ship in reserve.
