Sunday afternoon in Newark, St. John’s and Seton Hall will meet for the first of two regular-season meetings, a significant game for the present of both programs.

Seton Hall is looking to regroup after three straight road losses in its quest to return to the NCAA Tournament, while St. John’s is hoping to build off a win over DePaul and make progress amid a strong start to the Big East season.

The more important battle, however, may be taking place off the court in recruiting circles, at least as far as the future of the two programs is concerned.

That’s where they both doggedly are going after two elite New Jersey prospects — four-star Hudson Catholic guard Luther Muhammad and five-star Roselle Catholic forward Naz Reid, AAU teammates from powerhouse Sports U.

“If either program could land both, it would mean a lot, both in terms of giving a major infusion of talent that could lead to a NCAA Tournament appearance and sending a message locally that whichever program locally lands [them] is the place for others to choose,” 247Sports.com national recruiting analyst Andrew Slater said. “There are only so many opportunities for the local programs to land a pair of top 50 talents that it raises the stakes.”

The last time Seton Hall and St. John’s battled for a top prospect was in the fall of 2013, when Brooklyn’s Isaiah Whitehead ended up in South Orange. Lincoln High School teammate Desi Rodriguez followed him to the Pirates, part of a blockbuster recruiting class that produced last year’s Big East Tournament crown, Seton Hall’s first in 23 years.

The commitment affected the future of both programs. It may have saved Kevin Willard’s job and cost former St. John’s coach Steve Lavin his.

Now, with a new staff that has made the local area a focal point of recruiting, St. John’s is hoping to reverse that result, to land a few highly touted New Jersey prospects. The Red Storm see New Jersey as a key recruiting ground.

“I’m sure these two guys, if they were to go to the same school, they could make a similar impact,” said Sports U coach Brian Coleman, referring to the New York City natives who made such a difference for Seton Hall.

Slater expects both Reid and Muhammad to attend colleges in the Northeast. He said St. John’s has done a good job with both prospects, particularly the versatile Muhammad, and sees the 6-foot-10 Reid coming down to the two locals or Rutgers or Syracuse.

While Seton Hall is one of three schools to offer scholarships to the entire Sports U starting five — Atiba Taylor, Louis King and Jahvon Quinerly are the others — St. John’s has identified Muhammad and Reid as their top targets, along with Archbishop Molloy five-star center Moses Brown of Queens, for what it hopes it a breakthrough 2018 class.

There has been talk of the entire Sports U team attending college together — “I wouldn’t rule out the possibility,” Coleman said — though their recruitments are being handled separately. Reid and Muhammad could always go to school together, too. After all, they have known each other since the sixth grade.

Both Reid and Muhammad have plenty of other options — Kansas just recently came into the picture for Reid while Syracuse, Temple and Notre Dame have jumped in with Muhammad — and neither has created a list yet. But the two locals have been consistent with both prospects for years and have “gone hard,” according to Coleman.

“If he committed [to one of the schools first], that would make me even more interested, or if I committed somewhere early, that would [make] him more interested,” Muhammad said.

Coaches from both schools were at Kean University on Friday for a doubleheader to see both Muhammad and Reid in action. And Sunday, Muhammad will be at Prudential Center to see St. John’s and Seton Hall play.

At this point, the high school players might be evaluating the programs more than vice versa.

“I’m looking for how both teams coach, how the team goes through adversity, how they handle — can they handle it? — how the coaches handle it,” Muhammad said.

Coleman said Seton Hall plays up the local angle, while St. John’s pushes the future, the ability to learn under coaches Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond, who were Hall of Fame players.

Muhammad described the style in which Seton Hall and St. John’s has recruited him as similar, offering him immediate playing time and freedom in their offensive systems. He has developed a strong relationship with both school’s leading recruiters, Shaheen Holloway for Seton Hall and Matt Abdelmassih for St. John’s.

Whereas Holloway jokes around with him more and sends him quotes of inspiration, Abdelmassih makes it a point to praise his work ethic and check in frequently.

“If I was to stay [close to] home,” Muhammad said, “I’ve got great options.”

Interesting quotes from Luther regarding evaluating how both coaches and teams handle adversity. This game tomorrow could be bigger than just getting this season back on track.

I feel we need someone to step up and be an emotional leader. Both Gordon and Isaiah were hugely inspirational players ON the court. Both had the ability to get the team and crowd amped up by making a great play or hustle play - followed by a positive reaction (fist pump or other sign of confident emotion). We need that....too often we seem to be going through the motions or just grinding things out.

Big, big game, hope we are well prepared, strategically and emotionally.

Don't think the results of one game impact recruiting a particular kid. Both teams, plus Rutgers, and plenty of others, have been after some or all of the kids mentioned in the article. So many factors come into play. One of the reasons why Carrington chose us, even though SJU recruited him and had a better option to sell at that point. We recruited him better, and we had the assistant coach and player signed on who made a difference.

By the way I had a chuckle with the reference to the Whitehead recruiting "battle". Zach's usually good but I guess he didn't want to state the obvious on that front.

Agree. Agree. It's a zero sum game, especially in recruiting.

Brazllier is very close to the Whitehead family. He's not going to burn that bridge commenting on the specifics of the recruitment of IW.

Make no mistake, St. John's is our #1 rival.
No they are not. Cause they really don't care about us. The sju games will not get the interest here that the ru games always get. 36 years in the same league, but not a major rivalry imo. Only a little more than any other league team.

If you meant the major rivals for a few of these kids, they definitely seem to be.

This is what's wrong with journalism today. Not just in sports, but journalism as a whole. Reporters are too cozy with those they are supposed to be reporting on objectively.

Reporters have always been this way. Money is involved...

Dick young made his rep as Walter omalleys boy. If omalley was unhappy with a guy during contract negotiations , young wrote hiw the Dodgers were considering a trade to the worst team on the league, and when real news happened, young would be the guy who got the scoop.

Protect you source...

Agree with you 100%. I root for SJU to exceed more than any other Big East team. Rutgers much more of a rival.

Protecting your sources is different from carrying their water and shilling for them.

Let's just hope that both schools don't get shut out and land at least one of these players.

I know. But it isn't like this is a big secret or anything. Pretty much everyone knows the deal. I even think it has been written about before. If he didn't feel like re-hashing what everyone already knows, I get that. But don't make the point in the article. If anything, speak about Carrington, a NYC Kid who SJU did recruit when they had plenty to sell and still lost to us.

Agree. SJU's primary rivals are Gtwn & the 'Cuse, although they're play of late would maybe make LIU Brooklyn or St. Francis they're equals/rivals.

Sometimes it's the price you have to pay to get what you need in business. In this case inside BB information.

You think it was a coincidence that Brazilier wrote so many excellent articles on SHU and Whitehead during the past two years.

In fact thinking back it was the Trove that informed all of our readers that despite everyone believing that Whitehead was going to announce for St John's the day of his press conference it was noted there that morning "we were golden". I used those words and told our readers on that board to keep the info exclusive to the site because my source said don't post outright that's he's coming to SHU in deference to his 'surprise' announcement'. However, because of Brazilier's contacts he eventually did break the news in the NY Post around 1 PM that same day.

I remember when that happened and the incredible joy immediately following on this board.

I doubt there's a person out there that doesn't do the same thing he did in their business and daily lives.

Hell, I do it on this site and on the Trove. And all of our readers are the better for it.

The bigger problem with journalism today is that reporters all have an agenda and simply reporting the news is no longer the focus of their reporting its promoting their agenda and getting unbiased reporting is a lost art.

Yes, this too.

Irish bookmakers came out yesterday with a prediction on the Trump presidency. If they were in the know, I wonder what odds they would give that either of these two guys would end up at the Hall? Would any one who has been following the recruiting of these two guys have a guess?

Your post on the Trove that morning was "golden."

It was nice having a lot of big name NYC/SHU legends at todays game against StJ.

It was nice kicking StJ's ass.

It was nice how well Angel did and Powell (freshman going through a slump).

It was also nice having Brodie at the game.

If I'm Manuel (4* 6'8 PF from St Pat's) I'd love how we fed Angel and be unimpressed with how little StJ fed their bigs. That could be him in a few years.

Also the guards have to love that KW still has so much faith in a freshman going through a slump.

Saw Jeremy Hazel talking to the recruits at one point.

You carry water and protect them too, ie the Dick young story. You don't think print and tv news still does this. If so, you're nuts.

I am not saying it is right, just that it is the way it has always been. It is even worse now with the new fox news inspired media that cares less about truth than in supporting you pov.

If you if you are a PG or a great blocking 5 who wants to learn how to board why wouldn't you want to play with these guys next year. Bring on both Duval and Walker. Bring on Brodie. Bring on a shot blocking 7' real center who can let Angel play the 4 and have us go big or small as needed. Think some times we play big;
Duval
Carrington
Desi
Angel
Monster

Sometimes smaller
Duval
Carrington
Powell
Desi
Angel

Or we mix it up
Walker
Duval
Powell
Desi
Monster

And that is without Ish who is our best defensive player. Hit a 3 today (don't think we will see that happen too often but maybe a good 6' and in) and we have the makings of a champion.

My God 10+ deep and hot all the time

Add Gordon and even Soffer who will add 3-5 a game and we will not be stopped.
We got to make it happen.
