St Peters vs SHU GameThread

19-4 just over 14 minutes. Desi two 3's, IW and Carrington with a trey. Outstanding start.

19-12 under 12 minutes. I see good intensity on defense with SP making some tough shots. The
offense has stalled because they went to quick shot street ball. Plus Willard tried to substitute with a nice lead
and they couldn't sustain the level of play. Can't kill Willard as he got Angel and IW right back in there.

Hall leads 31-16 under 4 minutes. They've settled down and the defense is impressive.

Defense is playing well.

In re the wholesale swap, the Peacocks went on a TEN point run before KW decided to meter in the subs. It is obvious that it is an idea that does not work (the wholesale swap). It would be nice for it to stop.

I thought IW played very well in the 1st half. 5 pts 3ast but he easily could have had 6-7 assists if players finished a little better.

IW played like a point guard, maybe more than any other half that i've seen.

I understand the need to substitute; but why 4 at a time. How about mixing 2 in and spreading the substitutiona out. We have a good starting lineup; with Ish included as our top 6. Really only go 8 deep in quality and Veer is struggling to adjust but will come around.

Hall leads 51-23 under 12 minutes. SP is pretty bad I guess. We are taking care of business.

Angel playing very well today.

Nice game. Took care of business. That's really all you can take away from it. Onto Wichita State!

interesting postgame comments from Lavin - pretty sure he was identifying with KW there
I thought exactly the same thing , part of the head coaching fraternity. Also thought the comments about IW were right on the money .

Very good win...not looking ahead to Wichita State. Defense was improved today; good game to empty the bench and let some guys get extended minutes. Ish and Mike continue to elevate their games.

The Ad, thanks for sharing what he said. Will not comment on that.

During the main pressure of the game, I thought the defense really did show a better game today than previously. SP did not (I don't think) go into a zone like GW did, and I think the lack of pressure on the offense gave the team time to really focus on defense (because offense was working). This is a good learning / improvement game.

I don't think any of us could have asked for a better prep in advance of Wichita State - although a long week off is NOT what the doctor ordered - but it is what it is.

Lavin also said he is a very smart coach and that this is a young team.

Could not agree more. Thought that was his best half of the year. Moved the ball, got everyone involved and yes a lot of assists were left on the table by missed shots or teammates getting fouled in the act.

Carrington too helped with great ball movement.

80, I am told that many people have nothing to say when they read what fell out of my head onto the internet

Agree agree agree. We are seeing the same game.

Speaking of seeing the same game, Corbett and crew saw the same game we did today. The crew of the previous game must have been studying the rules to cricket or maybe tiddlywinks.

BTW, GREAT defensive effort by Ish in the first half. Deflections, a block, a steal. help defensive. He was all over the court.

I haven't watched a replay yet but I will be anxious to see if he played as well as I think he did.

Something to the effect that Willard is an excellent coach and that Seton Hall's fan base needs to be patient as he is one of the best out there.

This is going off memory obviously so it may not be exact.
"Seton Hall can't do better than Kevin Willard" was the money quote.

Yes, I heard that also. Gives one pause. What Lavin seems to be saying is that he thinks there is a ceiling at Seton Hall, that we are less attractive than several (most) other programs in the BE.

If a change of HC becomes necessary we can't go to some lower level conf and hope to catch lightening in a bottle and waste five years. We are going to have to spend big time for a coach with instant credibility in recruiting and player development.

The conference keeps getting stronger and stronger as shown by recruiting thruout the league and its cumulative OOC record and conference RPI. SHU is not a destination for 5-star talent. (We should really appreciate the fact that we have IW.). IMHO our sweet spot in recruiting is to get a couple 4-star guys and then consistently load up with 3-star guys that will develop over 3-4 years.

All the above being said we have good young talent in the program with more coming next year. If you consider Singh (and Carter) a good addition this year and Powell coming in next year, that's putting several good recruiting classes together in a row. Dare I say I'm feeling a little bit confident about this years team and the future. Time will tell.

Biggest addition coming in next year is Jevon Thomas. I think that he has real potential to be a top notch PG, and play good defense.

That is his natural position, unlike the conversions that have been attempted recently, eg Gibbs and the kid who transferred to Illinois.

Good point. Forgot about Thomas.

I saw Ish's game as you did. He played well.

I saw the Lavin comments the same way as you guys did. I love Lavin, but I think he's wrong obviously. We can do better than Willard's record in 6 seasons here. Yes he's finally started getting good peices in place on the team, but he can't coach when the chips are down. I hope it changes starting Saturday.

But if Lavin's right, and he certainly could be, we're in for a rude awakening here whenever we do get rid of Willard. You think he knows what he's talking about re: what SHU can get for a coach?

The defense is a given. Super quick pain in the butt.

Hopefully he works on his one major weakness, outside shooting. If he does he'll be a great addition to the team.

But don't forget about Powell. Rarely if ever can SHU say they are bringing in arguably the best shooter in the nation.

Looks like 3 good recruiting classes in a row (did not say great). Dare I look to this year and next rather than continually posting about Willard's record over the past 6 years, something that cannot change?

Team looked good today. Hope the same team shows up Saturday. Onward.
