State of the Union After 3 Games

Sha asked about message for the fan base: “Already? That question? I’m not sure how you guys want me to answer that question. I think that question is really not a good question right now. It’s three games in and you guys are worried about the fan base. Why would the fan base worry right now?"

Are you even serious now, Sha? Sorry, way down several pegs on the respect-meter from this alum / season ticket holder.

I agree. There’s a time and place for his brovado of how good a coach he is. Last night was not a time to spew the whole not worried nonsense. Gotta be able to read the room better than ghat

I don't like this. Love Sha, still support him 100% but he's no different than 95% of the arrogant college football/college basketball coaches.

Do you want to go down to mid major league or be last or next to last in conference every year.I say go down a level so you hsve chance to be competitive in every game.
I hate this, I say the next step down is not the A-10 but the MAAC. Remember, no way we play at The Rock if we are not a Big East school. So we play (in the less than most high school gyms) Walsh?

Seton Hall is really a MAAC school playing up in the Big East and I'd like to see it continue even though almost all sports teams are not good in the Big East. Now how do we do that??

Absolutely. Anyone advocating stepping down and away from the BE is really not thinking this through. It would be total oblivion. Where are we playing 15-17 home games? At 1200 capacity Walsh Gym. Gotta figure this out.

I think you just hit the nail on the head. If the current 'pay-for-play/no sitout year' environment continues there is no way we can stay competitive in the Big East. Our overall institutional giving rate has always been poor. And the only whales we had as donors were Brennan and Kozlowski who each ended up in orange jumpsuits. I salute the guys like Mike Walsh who have busted their asses to raise funds from the general poulation but despite that noble effort it just ain't enough.

Sorry to be a doomsayer but the handwriting is on the wall. Personally, I think a world where we go into the MAAC could be quite satisfying. I realize this is heresy to many, but at some point reality just kicks in.

Meanwhile, despite the first few disasters in the OOC, I still hold on to a shred of faith that Sha can find ways to make this team competitive and maybe even decent. In Sha I still trust, but my confidence has been sorely shaken. A repeat debacle against Wagner would further erode that teetering confidence.

Well, I committed to Charleston just before the season started. But another debacle to Wagner and I would be sorely tempted to pull the plug.

Ridiculous

And sounds like we should be prepared to lose to Wagner this weekend…from his comments.

I mean…c’mon…if our mid majors are supposed to scare us, then we have no business in a league like the Big East.

Let’s move down a level, or 2, and play competition more suited to us then.
Wagner played Rutgers and St. John's tough during those games even though they lost. This is not going to be easy for the Hall.

Nothing is easy for us right now, but both Rutgers and SJU beat Wagner by 20+. RU didn’t have Bailey based on the box score I just looked at, and Pitino seemed to treat it as a quasi scrimmage not starting 3 main guys. In other words, if we are going to right the ship, there is no reason we can’t beat them by double digits with our talent advantage.

One thing people are missing is we lost to Fordham and Hofstra. They're not bad programs by any means but they're definitely programs we should be able to out recruit and beat. So while I hear what everyone is saying about the NIL and the portal, a lot of the struggles we've seen so far in the non conference part of our schedule is on Coach Sha. If we were losing to UConn and Creighton you'd have a point but Sha failed to put together a roster that can beat mid major opponents at home. This team looks like a MAAC level program which which is where Sha came from. TBH his recruiting so far hasn't been very good. 2 out of the 3 freshman he brought in last year were way out of their league in Ozdogan and Malachi Brown. Sha can coach but his eye for talent as a recruiter at this level has a ways to go

Sha’s biggest problem going back to St. Peters has been his offense. Point blank he is compensated way too highly for his offenses to play so consistently anemic. In this day & age thats a death sentence. Like Willard he seems to have too big of an ego to let someone else run it. Team has no system, no identity. Experienced talent last year carried them but you still had periods of drought. In terms of his style he’s actually quite similar to Willard.

Honestly, can anyone answer this question - what is Sha’s offensive philosophy?

Yeah I’m meeting a buddy in Charleston. He lives in Aiken but knows Charleston and has our restaurants lined up. Hope to meet some posters at the pregame receptions.
The arena is in a great spot, can walk w everywhere. Enjoy!

Gotta start making up for these losses. Showing well and winning that tournament is a good start especially with neutral game against VCU to lead it off. But there’s nothing to show we can be that kind of team yet. 🤦‍♂️

Sha's bravado doesn't really bother me. He also said -

"So what should I say to the fan base, because everybody keeps asking me that same question? Step by step. We’re gonna put it together, we’re gonna figure it out. I gotta get back in the lab and tweak some things, and get the guys ready for Saturday against a good Wagner team.”

That's all I can ask.

It's tough to watch this group struggle and in the end they may fail. But I will keep going to the games.
