can’t read it either but this is such a complex situation. Are reforms needed yes but how will they be done and how do you manage around a massive union?

Somehow I read it for free earlier but now it's blocking it.

I’m not sold that reform is the true answer. What percentage of the force is bad? If a bad cop goes through reform he’s still going to be a bad cop. What percentage of lawyers are bad? Percentage of doctors prescribing opioids? I’m sure you could come up with other professions too with examples of bad dudes in the professsion, but reform is not always the answer for professions that have bad people in them. Just get the bad cops, lawyers, doctors, etc out of their positions. If Minneapolis took the guy off the force after his 5th or 10th issue, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Those people who kept him on the force should be accountable too.

David Patterson was very critical of Diblasio and Cuomo this morning and made a point that the NYPD is one of the most diverse racially and gender wise in the country.

I would love to see stats that prove it. But I’m sure that’s hard to find. At the same time, people throw the word reform out with no definition of reform. The only thing that’s been thrown out that has definitive plan is defund the police and I’m sorry I don’t mean to offend anyone but that’s just crazy in my opinion.

Let them defund the police in the major cities, nobody will EVER visit there. We will take the extra cops in NW Jersey, we appreciate them here. Only reason to go into NYC was for BET.

Imagine what will happen with gun sales if police departments are defunded. It would be a great time to invest in gun and ammo stocks.

Gun sales are already on the rise. I listened listened to an interview of a large retailer who said he was up 300% in the last week.

Processing all this, I am reminded of an interview I heard a few years back from a police commissioner (who was African American) who made a point of saying urban police work is a very messy business. You see things (poverty, abuse, blood, gruesome murders, etc.) that the public has no idea about and you see it everyday. Inner city policing is very dangerous and you the threat of life/death is real every day you leave your family. He added that you get conditioned and your instincts become a function of what you see. He was not giving a pass to racist behavior, but rather trying to give a view into how difficult their job is. Made me think that instead of memes, pithy posts or shouting down each other, it would be a good start to have someone from both the African American community and Law Enforcement just sit down together and share what it's like to be in their shoes every day. I think that would an be eye-opening conversation. Most of us have no idea what it's like to be either and certainly very, very few know what its like to be both.

You are spot on here.

So few years back all my cousins quite their jobs and joined either the fdny or nypd.

All four of them had six figure jobs at finra/Pwc/ibm/Goldman.

They wanted to do something they were passionate about and help others.

Since they have joined the fdny and nypd there has been a drastic change in there feeling towards the inner city.

Everyday they go on calls for an od and they find the mom dead with seven kids sitting on a mattress. They see gang rivals killed with there tops blown off, they see some of the worst violence imaginable. Two days on the job my cousin had a bullet go through the top of hit nypd hat..

my cousins in the fdny have it an it easier then, The nypd but they all see an absolute disaster and the failure of all our systems 24/7.

these images and there feelings most likely will not change...

I get it it’s tough this sucks I just wish we had a way to fix it without people getting hurt.

apologies for the typos and bad grammar.

Obviously the racism and police brutality must end, but being a police officer in a city, especially inner city is not an easy job.

My father in law was a Newark police officer, before becoming a detective with the Essex County prosecutors office, the stories he tells are unbelievable. Him and his partner getting shot at from a window in the projects, to stumbling onto a store robbery and having criminal pull trigger with gun pointed directly at him, luckily the gun misfired, Crime way down in these cities since late 70s & 80s, but still lots of stuff to deal with. And most decision are split second and police are trained to use deadly force if necessary, not the case in what happened in Minneapolis last week.

A worry I have is less quality and smart people decide not to be cops because they feel it is not a “good profession”, only making the problem worse in the future.

I found the article the original poster wanted but it can’t be linked here. You have to go through google to read it for some reason.

Camden disbanded their police department years ago and reinstated it with many changes. There are plenty of articles on it. It’s a great case study. Homicide and violent crimes have been dropping every year and They had fewest homicides since the 80s.

The Camden county police took over policing the city, correct?

I can't help but laugh at the morons promoting no police. Good luck to anyone in Minneanapolis with housing, property values gonna tank when it's open season on people, their properties and their possessions.

Its not ‘no police’ it’s reinventing how police function within the community they’re supposed to protect. Police departments in general are grossly overfunded and rather inefficient when it comes to actually solving crime. Just look at this graph. imagine giving $90 million more each to the department of Ed and Health, that would make a significant difference AND the police would still be the highest funded department.

Then why don’t they say that. You may want to check the definition of the word.

My god, you're clueless and so are the morons promoting this.

Defund- preventing from continuing to recieve funds.

I'm not surprised the imbeciles promoting this don't know what the word means.

How much money is dumped into inner city schools? Tons

All the district's in my county have lost double digit funding and it's been sent to Newark, Camden, etc. You can only throw so much money at places where people don't give a crap. The black community needs to be accountable, every issue is not the problem of white people. They need to resolve their family unit issues AND inner city violence. Police don't have open target season on blacks, in fact they shot twice as many unarmed whites last year. People need to get educated

That is just a horrible take man. Don’t have open target in blacks???? What country have you been living in?? Defund the police doesn’t mean getting rid of police and letting everyone run wild. The police are the ones currently running wild with no accountability. Just cause you enforce the law doesn’t mean you’re above it. Police are way overfunded as it is. Consider yourself one of those people that need to get educated man. I’m not going to indulge you any more on this topic cause it’s clear it’s not going anywhere. Your social/political takes are even worse than your SHU basketball takes.

You don't even know what defund means. Look up a dictionary, you can't make up some shitty definition for your cockeyed social views.

You should protest Chicago, 18 killed in one day. Where is the calls for change? Nowhere let's rail against police.

I live in a nation where 9 unarmed blacks were killed last year, and 19 whites. Please explain....

Have you heard of percentages and how they work? Or did you miss statistics class?
US Population 331 million
76% white = 251.5 million
13% black = 43 million
So 9 is actually 3 times as many when you figure the percentages.

I'm glad you brought up percentages because black Americans are commiting 60% of violent crimes and have over 70% of kids out of wedlock. Might the lack of family unit and epic crime contribute to some of their issues?

13% of population but 60% of violent offenses. Please explain

And whites are only 60%, 76% includes Hispanic, altho I will admit I am not sure if the 1i unarmed whites included Hispanic

What does kids out of wedlock have to do with anything??

I see you ignored the glaring 60% of violent crime for 13% of population. The issue with the kiss out of wedlock is lack of father figures to be a strong role model.

Only violent crimes I’ve seen in the last week have been committed by police on peaceful protestors

Youre just ignorant, you've been asleep as American cities burned and police were murdered? Are the federal government stats no longer valid? What a troll

Lmao statistics are ignorant now? As soon as stats are dropped you have nothing to say. Keep your head in the sand kid.
See the thing about your stats is that you think that somehow justifies the cops killing black people. But it doesn’t so it’s a useless stat and continuing this conversation with some narrow minded ignorant person like you doesn’t do any good cause you’re part of the problem.

Does it justify all the cops who kill white people though?

Unfortunately your attitude is that of most of these extreme left activists. Only your opinion counts and anyone who disagrees cannot be tolerated. Then you call them names, insult them (only thing you're missing is an expletive) and say you'll ignore them. That's the playbook. Talk about narrow mindedness, you're unable to have a conversation with someone who has a differing opinion.

Never thought I’d have to say this. But cops shouldn’t be killing anyone period. Thought you guys were smarter than that but I guess I was wrong. And never thought someone would disagree with that. It’s not narrow minded to think that the constitution should be specifically the 1st and 14th amendment be upheld. And it’s not about ignoring people or being able to have a debate or conversation. These topics shouldn’t be up for debate period. And I wouldn’t call myself ‘extreme left activist’ but everyone that not a right wing nut job is apparently extremely leftist to you clowns.

later dudes. I could give you the expletive you want but nahh

There you go again. I rest my case. Incapable of having a debate without name calling and passive-aggressive insults. This is what people do when they realize they're on the losing side of the argument.

You never answered @kniespolice question and conveniently dodged my point about all the white people killed by police. The bottom line is each case should be evaluated separately. George Floyd was murdered by a rogue cop. The guy on the parkway? I think the officer was justified in using force after the subject repeatedly ignored his commands and became belligerent. Every case needs to be evaluated on the facts, not a broad brush.
