TJ Gibbs recaps visit to OU

TJ Gibbs felt like Oklahoma offered him a family pretty far away from his north New Jersey home.
Sitting in Ryan Spangler’s living room with Buddy Hield, Bola Alade, Isaiah Cousins and 2016 commit Payton Pritchard – a potential classmate, Gibbs felt like it was just that.
“That’s some place that I can definitely see myself,” Gibbs said.
Gibbs, a 6-foot-3, 4-star combo guard, is the 58th overall player in the 2016 class. He came out to Oklahoma for the first time and got to meet face-to-face with Sooners coach Lon Kruger in his office, something Gibbs said was important to him before the trip.
This was Gibbs’ first official visit, and he has another planned for the final weekend in April to Notre Dame. He has three more but said they are not scheduled yet.
“I thought it was great,” Gibbs said of the visit, which lasted from Friday to Sunday and included a one-night stay at Spangler’s house. “I’m definitely taking strides to really making my decision.
“This was definitely a helpful thing to go down there, see how I fit in, see the team, see the campus, really get to talk to coach Hill and coach Kruger. That’s definitely helped me. It’s going to help me make my decision.”
Gibbs went out to eat late Friday night and toured the campus while hanging out with the team Saturday. He said that he and Pritchard got to know each other and have continued texting and talking since the visit.
He also got to spend time with Isaiah Cousins, who grew up just a few miles from Gibbs’ home. Cousins was closer with Gibbs’ older brothers, but seeing how comfortable Cousins was so far from home was a positive for Gibbs.
“It was fun to see that somebody who came from my area was able to go down there and feel right at home,” said Gibbs, who will likely play a similar role to Cousins if he came to Oklahoma.
Being close with Cousins was one thing, but realizing the closeness of the team was far more important for Gibbs.
“It definitely did have that feel,” he said. “It felt like it was definitely a family. They all like each other. It was definitely a fun experience.”
