So after the last 3 months, which came on the heels of the Gonzo debacle and four horrible to mediocre seasons by KW before we caught lightening in the bottle for three months but then collapsed yet again, have we finally hit rock bottom?
In the last three months:
- Our team collapsed miserably for the 2nd consecutive season
- Our starting PG quit abruptly without even re-joining the team after the game
- Rumors surfaced of a very ugly locker room situation to the extent that Deadspin picked up the story in the wake of Sina's departure
- Rumors about a secret contract extension that we couldn't afford to buyout, or just wouldn't buyout, emerged, just as KW's even most ardent supporters (myself included) saw what many posters had seen and expressed here for years
- Our prized recruit and best player get into a heated skirmish during a sideline huddle
- Our best player punches a high profile player in the head on national TV
- The team, and more importantly the coach, quit late in the season, most visibly in the 1st round of the BE tournament against a far less talented team
- No apparent impact recruits are added, leaving us very thin up front, creating a bleak outlook for the '15-'16 season even if our best player returned
- Our best player announces he's not returning
- Blogger who according to some is connected (according to others is a hack) writes a scathing blog about our HC, IW, and our program in general, which also alluded to some disturbing details about Willard's extension, when it was given (a year ago??), and who was responsible for it. (again, no idea who this blogger is but still some damaging stuff out there for anyone to read).
Is this rock bottom for our program? An article about the Gonzo and Willard era has Pulitzer Prize written all over it if the right journalist could somehow break down the barrier of secrecy that SHU is adept at maintaining.
I can think of a few scenarios that would further the dissent like NCAA sanctions, guys "going for theirs" next year once we start to struggle, and Willard's contract still being too expensive to buyout even after next year. But this has to be the bottom, right?
I'm not even sure what to root for next season, but I'll be watching every game anyways. I guess best case scenario is we exceed expectations (even slightly), all the young guys develop and play together as a team, we finally make the right hire next April while retaining as many players as we can. Pretty pathetic to go into a season with those expectations, but I'd sign up for that right now.
