Navajo Nation has a suggestion for the new name of Washington’s football team

By Daniel Canova, Fox News

July 14, 2020 | 12:54am |

The Washington Redskins announced Monday that they will change their team name and logo after about 87 years of using it, in the wake of corporate and public pressure to ditch the moniker over racial connotations.

The Navajo Nation put out a statement on the retirement of the Redskins name.

“July 13, 2020 is now a historic day for all Indigenous peoples around the world as the NFL Washington-based team officially announced the retirement of the racist and disparaging ‘Redskins’ team name and logo,” Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez wrote. “This change did not come about willingly by the team’s owners, but by the mounting pressure and advocacy of Indigenous peoples such as Amanda Blackhorse, and many other warriors who fought long and hard for this change.”

The statement continued: “We strongly encourage the NFL Washington organization to rename their team in such a way that truly honors and respects the First Americans of this country. Renaming the team ‘Code Talkers’ to honor the Navajo Code Talkers, and other tribal nations who used their sacred language to help win World War II, would set the team on a path to restoring its reputation and correcting the historical misrepresentation of Indigenous peoples.”

The Washington franchise has yet to announce a new team name.

Washington has come under renewed fire over the term Redskins in recent weeks, with FedEx publicly requesting that the team change its name. The company reportedly threatened to remove signage from the stadium as well if the team didn’t make the alteration by the end of the 2020 season.

Big-name retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and Target, as well as Nike and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all removed Redskins merchandise from their websites last week.

Also last week, ESPN reported that the team had made the decision to remove the Native American imagery from its logo.

The recent national focus on race relations, prompted by the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, brought new scrutiny of the team’s name. That’s when the Redskins said they would conduct a “thorough review” of the team name.

The team also hopes to build a new stadium and return inside DC city limits.

“On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name. That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward.

“Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.

“[Owner] Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

that name is weak sauce. like the sentiment tho.

anyone hear about the atomic bomb news that is supposed to drop out of DC tomorrow? this whole name change happened to lessen the blow as a distraction.

What would that be?
its tight lipped. but they say something "sinister". its why ALL the minority owners have hit the road.

probably something to do with that cheerleader escort scandal.

For years I thought the Redskins name seemed racist and I’m not out there protesting just an opinion. I went to college with a guy of India decent and he loved the Cleveland Indians so I leave it up to the particular group to decide if something offends them ( I know, different Indian culture). I thought the “Pigskins” would be a cool replacement that would only offend PETA. Stay safe!

"What a tackle by the code taker!" Doesn't really translate for a broadcast.

Years ago when we were out west we went to the Code Talker Museum in Tuba City, Arizona. (Yes, there is an actual museum). It was pretty cool (definitely recommend) but I’m not sure it translates into a football nickname.

Assume there are two things to do in Tuba City.

go to museum
get out of town

Not that it really matters since the name would never work, but its Code Talkers, which would be a perfect name for any Bill Belichick coached team.
Typo on the headline, Just corrected it.

There’s a Washington football bombshell coming and it’s not about the name

The removal of a racist nickname won’t end Daniel Snyder’s problems.

Not long after the Washington owner announced that his team would no longer be known as the Redskins, a series of cryptic tweets from local reporters emerged, warning of an imminent bombshell set to shake the franchise to its core.

“The warped and toxic culture of the Washington Football Team is about to be exposed in a sickening fashion . . . Again,” wrote CBS’ Jason La Canfora, a former team beat reporter.

Julie Donaldson of NBC Sports Washington also wrote, “What’s coming is disappointing and sad.”

Though it remains unclear what will surface, several other reporters have also been tipped off to news that could be devastating to the team.

“There is much more going on . . . than a name change,” Scott Abraham of ABC 7 wrote. “. . . And it’s not good. I did not get specifics, but get ready people.”

JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington shared a similar tweet.

“A real busy week. And it’s not all going to be about the name and it’s not all going to be pretty.”

It is believed that a Washington Post story expected to be released on Thursday is the basis for the tweets.

Would love to keep Red in the name. Code Talkers clunky.
Red Claws, Red Sky, Red Herrings, Red Riders, Red Wings, Red Tails, Red Arrows,
Red Fins.
Need a life.

Pretty much… LOL. It’s on the way to Monument Valley and when you have three screaming kids in the car that’s what you do to punish them.

Soon, Washington will wish speculation was its biggest issue.

Team officials of the franchise formerly known as the Redskins are “highly upset/frustrated” over the increasing number of cryptic tweets and stories preparing the public for an imminent bombshell from the Washington Post, exposing the organization’s troublesome past “culture,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. In preparation for the report expected to be released this week, Washington has hired attorney Beth Wilkinson to “review the organization’s protocols,” Schefter said.

Wilkinson confirmed to NPR that she was brought in by the team.

“We can confirm that our firm was retained by the team to do an independent review of the team’s culture, policies and allegations of workplace misconduct,” Wilkinson wrote.

The team, which officially announced Monday it will retire its longtime racist nickname, also recently saw numerous personnel shake-ups, with front office members Richard Mann III and Alex Santos departing, as well as longtime radio play-by-play announcer Larry Michael.

Previously, Julie Donaldson of NBC Sports Washington wrote that the contents of the soon-to-be-released Washington Post story are “disappointing and sad.” Former team beat writer Jason La Canfora suggested it will be even worse than that.

“The warped and toxic culture of the Washington Football Team is about to be exposed in a sickening fashion . . . Again,” La Canfora tweeted.

I find this whole bombshell theory somewhat confusing. Do we really think for a minute that Schefter or LaCanfora would actually sit on this when they already know specifics.

Sounds like a nothing burger. The media is a big joke. Some in the media are now calling the process the Redskins used to chang their name to be racist. There is no satisfying these people.

if the reports of paying NFL refs to be true, and that it wasnt just snyder... that could be a big deal. tbf the cheerleader thing should have been made a bigger deal.

Wapo may be disclosing but it sure sounds like Schefter & LaCanfora, as well as many others, already know. Not like them to defer. Especially Schefter.

If they didn't do the reporting, it's not their news to break even if they know about it. This isn't 20 reporters getting information from the same agent who tells them his client just agreed to a deal.

Redskins bombshell: 15 ex-employees make sexual harassment claims

Washington NFL team gets angry, lawyers up ahead of imminent bombshell

There's a Washington football bombshell coming and it's not about the name

Coach Ron Rivera made a strong statement Thursday, saying sexual harassment and a toxic work culture will have no place in the Washington organization during his tenure.

Rivera’s remarks came on the heels of an explosive Washington Post report in which 15 former Redskins female employees accused the NFL organization of sexual harassment and fostering a toxic culture of verbal abuse and ignoring complaints.

“Biggest thing is we have to move on from this and make sure everybody understands we have policies that we will follow and that we have an open-door policy with no retribution,” Rivera told reporters on Thursday. “Plus my daughter [Courtney] works for the team, and I sure as hell am not going to allow any of this!”

According to the Post report, the women say the were subject to unwelcome sexual advances and inappropriate comments about their bodies, adding that they were encouraged to dress provocatively and flirt with sale clients. Of the five male employees primarily accused of misconduct, two were fired and one retired within the past week as the newspaper presented findings from conducting more than 40 interviews and reviewing internal documents and text messages to the team for reaction.

The veteran coach, who also has been working with Snyder on changing the Redskins nickname, said taking the toxicity out of the workplace is part of his effort to bring positive change throughout the organization.

“[Owner] Dan Snyder brought me here to change culture and create an environment of inclusion among employees. I believe that everyone that works for this franchise has a vested interest in our success.”

As for the embattled Snyder, he is not accused of sexual harassment, but top executives in his organization are, according to the report. He also was blamed belittling employees, and understaffing their human resource department, which created a fear of speaking out throughout the organization.

Snyder, who in the past was steadfast in not changing the Redskins name, has now changed his tune. On Monday, the team announced the retirement of their team name and logo, ending usage of a derogatory slur for Native Americans. The replacement name fore the team has not been revealed yet.

Dan Snyder addresses sexual harassment allegations made against key executives of his Washington NFL franchise, says ‘new culture’ is coming

By DAILY NEWS SPORTS DESK
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |

A day after the Washington Post published a damaging report in which 15 former employees of Dan Snyder’s Washington NFL franchise accused several key executives of sexual harassment and verbal abuse, Snyder issued a brief statement.

“The behavior described in yesterday’s Washington Post article has no place in our franchise or society,” Snyder wrote.

“This story has strengthened my commitment to setting a new culture and standard for our team, a process that began with the hiring of Coach Rivera earlier this year.”

While the former female employees didn’t accuse Snyder directly of misconduct, the alleged harassment and abuse took place under his watch.

Prior to the release of the Post’s story, Snyder had announced his team had hired D.C. attorney Beth Wilkinson to review the franchise’s culture, protocols and policies.

“Beth Wilkinson and her firm are empowered to do a full unbiased investigation and make any and all requisite recommendations. Upon completion of her work, we will institute new policies and procedures and strengthen our human resources infrastructure to not only avoid these issues in the future but more importantly create a team culture that is respectful and inclusive of all.”

St. Johns was 26 years ahead of the Washington Redskins, changing their name in 1994. There's no doubt that the term "redskins" is disparaging at minimum; why has it taken so long for the NFL team to see the light. I'm somewhat opposed to the cancel culture, but, this is a no brainer.

this guy sounds like a huge moron. hes reacting to fabricated outrage over colors.

their team name literally is a skin color. replace it white blackskins or yellowskins and how do you feel?

has anyone even remotely mentioned an issue with cleveland browns? no. this guy is exagerrating invented outrage just so he can make a case for keeping the redskins name clearly has a lot of time on his hands.

You read that and that was you’re takeaway?. It’s tongue and cheek. He’s merely carrying the logical if absurd extension of those who make so much of team names.
