TJ Simpkins

Wow. If you guys get a chance you should re-read all the comments in order. It’s like a stand up comedy routine.

It is kinda scary how hard it seems for us to get a reliable outside threat.

Does this mean that Bell and Lewis are off the table or too expensive?

Welcome aboard Simkins! Hope you score a lot.

First, I would say welcome. No idea of where in the big picture the staff places his importance to next season. I can't say if they believe either of these first two signings are the Marquee signings for the 2025-2026 season. However, if they are not, then can we make an argument that funds are being depleted for negotiating for more talented players?? The kid does look like a high energy player and that's a good thing.

He put up solid numbers for a freshman, albeit again lower competition. Seems like maybe there’s some upside there. Hopefully, not a budget breaker and he can be a solid backend rotation piece.

We still need much better players to round out the rotation, though.
Spot on, Booms. Look, Budd Clark and TJ Simpkins are ours and we’ll be rooting for them and the rest of the Pirates come November. But both come from low mid major programs and are not without risk. Based upon whom we’ve been linked to, does this off-season not feel like deja vu? If Sha closes off the practice access again this Fall, that will tell us all we need to know.

Despite my reservations, please let me join NYC Pirate in welcoming both TJ and Budd. Given last year’s results of which you are fully aware, you’ll have to excuse my skepticism! Hoping you both successfully make the big jump!

Another mid-major with good credentials in most categories EXCEPT 3 point shooting. Right now we have NOBODY who is a perimeter threat. Maybe one or more are coming. If not, hope these two guards we signed have the ability to drive to the hoop against a zone.

I'm tempted to say some very negative things but I have been a strong Sha supporter and I am really hoping he can mold this new team into a winner. Having a hard time seeing that as of now, but he has earned the right to turn things around. But we cannot have another terrible year. Frankly, we cannot have even a mediocre year.

I reserve judgment on most all these kids. So we will see.

But I’m also not going to start celebrating or making crazy comparisons.

There is a thread today with most of our boards being very critical about DAW’s play.

How do you think DAW would have done for Elon this past year?

A raw player from a P4 could suck, a guy from lower competition can suck too. I lean towards to proven production but you can hit/miss both ways.

Commit to a system, find players that fit and go from there. I’ve heard a lot about what type of players Sha likes but going into year 4 I couldn’t really tell you what his offensive system is.

i get that guys that can shoot are more expensive but they absolutely need a serious infusion of shooting talent. Even if you compensate with athleticism.

I’m always willing to go with Jerry on this type of player. He knows more than anyone on this site. Anyone.

Actually a great article, he mentions multiple targets and hints at Sha wanting to use a matchup zone defensively. Its a direction. From a personality/temperament standpoint, a trapping & blitzing style defense fits Shaheen. Turnovers ideally create fast break opportunities which also help teams that struggle to shoot from outside.

Stanford & Bell seem to have more 3PT capability, the latter shot 42% a year ago on more attempts per game than this year. Maybe the staff thinks he’ll get back there with more opportunities.

Thanks for sharing

There’s still lots to do. But it will be very clear where we are NIL wise if we don’t sign a top player. How much could our two signees have cost? $100k each?
Not too mention the cost of Coleman, Middleton and Okorafor are off the books, along with the “graduating” players. So we should be way ahead, but here we are..

Our number listed for last year was $1.5m. I think that was probably inflated by double. And I think our current number is maybe $1m.

If we had the money tht we’ve been told we have plus having the desperation of getting rid of last season abdominal stench. You’d think we’d be reaching out to DJ Wagner, Aaron Bradshaw, Bryce Hopkins, RJ Luis.. But no, we go straight to the basement of the portal. All the signs are showing we are finished, no matter what propaganda is put out here.
100k each lol , I think David Gabriel might get $100k this year. Decent players ( like these two ) get $500k-700k according to multiple reports.

I wanted him when I saw they were after him. Like so many have already pointed out, he's not a good 3 point shooter right now but I like everything else about his game. Good size for a guard, good athlete, defender, finisher, and FT shooter. I also like that he's local (Brooklyn kid). I like the two guards we picked up so far. Need some quality bigs on board

"More reliable version" of Femi Odukale, written as if that is a good thing. Couldn't help but laugh at that comment!
Femi’s biggest issue was that he couldn’t hit a free throw. He got to the hoop, could handle the ball, rebound and defend but you have to hit your FT’s if you have that game. Given the budget (and who else shows up), that’s not a bad comparison. And he did hit 35% from three in JC.

Let’s face it though….we are all flying blind and know very little about him.

Watched Femi after he left the Hall and he still couldn’t shoot, he was a tough kid and to this day might have on e of the greatest dunks in Seton Hall history. His dunk toward the end of of the UConn game was outstanding

Historically, we have done at least as well with MM transfers as HM. Transfers last year from Louisville, Wisconsin, OSU, Providence, and BC didn’t exactly crush it. Many including me thought that our transfers were solid and they were not.

Clark and Simpkins look like pieces you put around proven major conference players.

Let’s finish the puzzle so time to wait and see

Lol. There is no way, if past is prologue, that Sha will spend on "proven major conference players"

We let Coleman, Dre Davis, Samuel, Kadary all walk. And they were OUR proven major conference players.

You know nothing Jon Snow.

If you think you’re signing a competitive player for $100k, are you even reading?

Then who are we getting to fill out the roster if these two cost big bucks? There bank account is getting thin already then

Not worth the back and forth because I’ve seen your posts over time. Your estimate of us having $1m in NIL is, let’s just say, off. And you piss and moan like a kid.

There are players in the works. I’m not going to say I’m overtly thrilled with any, and names have been floated here and elsewhere, but signings will obviously come.

Would like to see some shooting wings that all these guards who can’t shoot can drive and pass out to.

I agree but this is Sha and the administration’s opportunity to change that. If they don’t they get fired and the program continues to tank to irrelevancy.

This is a crossroads offseason. That’s why so many people are panicking and shouting the negatives

Simpkins was a sophomore last year.

Need to see how things play out. If he's the 8th - 10th man, good get. If he's higher than that, not such a good get.
He’s a decent get. If they don’t get any better players it’s not on him. He’s still the same player. A decent get. I hope he makes a typical jump in his play as a junior.

I have zero issues with Coleman walking the others I wish we made different decisions.

Three point shooting…everyone wants it, so those players are going to get a premium for their services, even if they have weaknesses in other parts of their games. Are we in a position to spend $2 million for one player?
