And the transfers have started.

The 4th ranked center in the 2014 class Goodluck Okonoboh has transferred from UNLV.
He averaged 26.7 Minutes 5.7 pts 4.5 Rebounds and 2.9 Blocks per game his freshman year.
He was only getting 15 minutes per game this year.

Are we able to take on a transfer in the spring semester?

This is the problem about using all of our scholarships. We should keep open at least one scholarship rather than signing a player who may only have "potential" or fill a small role on our team. Now, we would have to convince Goodluck to pay his own way for the spring semester and be on scholarship the following years. Goodluck would not be eligible till next December after fall semester.

Same issue I raised about the women's program where transfers have been a significant part of its success because, as of now, no ships are open for the 2016 class.

If we could even get an audience with Goodluck, let alone get him to commit. I can promise a scholarship would open up.

A scholarship will only open for next year. We have used all of our scholarships for this year. Therefore, Goodluck would have to pay his own way or be on financial aid for the spring semester.

I think it would be a great boost to this program just to have a guy named Goodluck on the team.

Didn't St. John's have a player a few years ago named God's Gift?

Well since we obviously play by the rules that would mean someone loses a ship. How dare you speculate we would take someones ship away!!

Why would a highly talented player who will have multiple offers for a scholarship ever choose a school like SH where he would have to pay his own way.

It has happened before that a player will pay their own way for a semester ............but that's my point........by not keeping open a scholarship, it makes it extremely unlikely that we can get a transfer.

Is it common practice that schools keep a scholarship open? How many schools have only 12 scholarship players hoping for that mid-year flyer?

Honest question.

SHU has had a transfer most every recent year I can think of. I doubt 2016 will be any different.

Sami honest answer.
I think that far more schools do then those who don't because you don't expect much from that 13th player on your roster and using that ship to land a high caliber player makes sense . It makes even more sense with women's BB where they have 15 ships to play with. In fact there are a number of programs who value the transfer pool of talent as high as they do the HS pool .

I don't know but remember Pitt having a player with the name something like God Shamgod

Providence, not Pitt. His born name was Shamgod Wells but he changed it (perhaps legally or perhaps just for fun) to God Shamgod. He had some game, although it was not quite almighty.

He played for Providence. Has to be one of the best names in CBB history. He was actually a really good player. God's Gift Achiuwa was the recent SJU player.

I would think somewhere between 50 to 75% keep a scholarship open. It is less important for the Duke's, Kentucky's, etc. who are not likely to be on the receiving end of a scholarship transfer than the low and mid majors who can often depend on the transfers.
