Trump Indictment

Hush money payments.

Those aren't a problem unless those people decide to run for office, payoff people from disclosing negative information and funnel the payments through their business as a legal expense.

Kind of a very narrow scope there that billionaire donors don't really need to worry about.

I guess I can go give hush money payments for 150K, not file a 1099, not file gift tax return as long as I don't run for office. Thanks for the advice. I'm also sure no employee ever got a nice bonus to keep a relationship quiet. Our congressional slush fund seems to be quiet. Maybe once your in office you can spend taxpayers money on fooling around with interns and call it a business expense.

Well, the payments then writing it off as a business expense is tax fraud. Now would that result in an indictment for a normal person? Not sure. But, it’s illegal.

You're making up fake scenarios that don't really compare though.

There is a reason why Trump tried to kill these stories and there is a reason why they tried to separate it from the campaign. People and businesses are still free to continue processing their hush money payments outside of campaign finance laws as they have been. They still have to follow tax law.. and yeah, if they are breaking tax law, then I guess the government could (and should) go after them.

The reason is votes. Same reason every politician on the planet doesn't want much greater or much less stories coming out at election time.

People should also have to follow all laws including labor law. You think government cares about labor laws that are broken right in front of their face every day? I guarantee you the last slice of pizza most of our politicians had probably wasn't free of issues pertaining to labor law and nobody cares. But I'll guarantee if the pizzeria owner tries to take on our government, they'll go after him for every labor law in the book. That's the issue.

I don't think any of these people care Trump messed around with money. This is about somebody who they had no problem with for years, always took his dirty money, who probably paid off more people than any of us can imagine. Now he goes up against them and is trying to bring them down...now they come after him in every way possible.

Yes, exactly. And those politicians have to worry about campaign finance laws.

Did John Edwards go up against anyone to get charged with the same crime?

Or was it just a blatant violation of the law that he lucky to get away with because the burden of proving that he was hiding the mistress from voters and not his wife was too difficult to overcome?

John Edwards was tried federally for election finances. Edwards had a rich friend/and donor who gave a hundreds of thousands to Edward's mistress who had his baby. So, Edwards defense was that he was trying to cover up the affair and keep it from his wife. The affair and the baby happened during the time he was campaigning.

It is a little different In Trump's case, the Feds do not indict him for election finance crimes. Although they did send Michael Cohen to jail for that same damn conspiracy which is a little baffling. Now, it can be because Trump was a sitting President and the policy was not to go after a sitting President. Or the probable reason was that it didn't work against Edwards, it won't work against Trump.

But there is a big difference between the two cases. In Edwards the affair and the baby were happening at the same time as he was running for President. In Trump's case, the affairs with Stormy and Karen McDougal happened like 10 years before. So, he wasn't worried about his wife finding out then in 2006. So the only real reason he did the hush money was because he was running for President. To me, it is a better case against Trump than Edwards. The sleazier thing is that he then wrote off the payments as a business expense. the guy has no shame.

Sorry to disappoint you conspiracists. I am sure the Democratic Party did not want to indict Trump on a weak indictment. This is not what they wanted. It looks bad. This is a DA for whatever reason decided to go forward with this charge. There is just no way the powers at be thought this was a good idea.

It makes no sense whatsoever to go after Trump on a very flimsy case with statute of limitations issues. There are two other cases that have more real impact. The one in Georgia and the Federal obstruction case based upon the documents. There is no coordinated action here. It's just a bad DA moving forward with a case he never should have brought.
Could they really be that stupid? I hear what you are saying just doesn’t make any sense. Maybe they just want him in the news with people hearing the indictment word along with Trump for the next year.
