UConn’s Sterling Gibbs denies bitterness in Seton Hall exit

Gibbs assaulted the Nova player in the head in the heat of the moment. It wasn't accidental. The first swat by Gibbs was accidental, the second swat was clearly an intentional elbow to the face. If you show the video to100 people, 99 will agree that it was not accidental.

I agree with Dan. Hard feelings towards Gibbs and Sina do not serve any useful purpose. I won't go out of my way to root for them, but I won't malign them any more either.

There is no way anyone could watch that video at the 37 second mark and think he was trying to do anything other than clobber Arch.

It is clear from the video that Gibbs struck RA on purpose. His reactions after the event indicate that Gibbs thought it was intentional so lets get past this. He did it, he owned that he did it and stepped up and sincerely apologized and RA forgave him. You can be embarrassed as a fan of the school but you should really not be angry at Gibbs as all of us make mistakes especially in the heat of competition. As far as he told the staff he was coming back he is allowed to change his mind. As far as I am concerned Gibbs gave SHU everything he could while playing for us. He was a talented individual who helped us win a lot of games and gave his all while on the court. That is all we can really ask as a fan. I wish him well in his future endeavors. Remember at least he did not quit on his team in the middle of the season.

1. If you watch in real time does it look like hes trying to punch him? No. If you do obviously you have never seen a punch thrown in your entire life.

2. When they first go to the floor Sterling does the SAME EXACT motion trying to get the ball free. Same one. @27/28 seconds

3. @37 seconds he is CLEARLY looking for the ball. Eyes laser beamed on the ball.

4. Take a look at the angle at 33 second mark repeated in slow mo via the video below. Are you seriously going to tell me Ajou's diving head had nothing to do with the direction of the swipe?

Come on. If you think thats a punch you are out of your mind.

It was an elbow not a punch. And clearly intentional.
LOL an elbow, even better. the old no look elbow.

Its a scrum. get out of here. he literally tried the same thing moments before. you guys are all just butt hurt he left.

Elbow, forearm. Whatever.

The sentiment of the board I believe was the same right after the incident. Long before he left. The announcers saw it. The refs saw it. The school saw it and suspended him. Gibbs essentially admitted to it via his apology. For some reason you choose to think it was an accident. That's fine. Everyone can form their own opinion.

Gibbs punched at the ball earlier before Archy was on the ground that would have been a flagrant 2 if he hit the player. Clearly the fist went off of Ajou's head (so he wasn't aiming at Archy's head), but never the less he was throwing a punch. That was the way Gibbs played. I remember numerous times when he did things to irritate the opposing players. Gibbs was great at giving guys cheap shots after the play, but making it look like it was done by accident so he wouldn't get called for it.

I do not have hard feelings towards him. I wish him luck and happiness. I said last spring I hope he stays, but if him staying effected the plans of any of our frosh, I want them instead. And now, I am happy at how it transpired as I want our two soph guards to get all the time needed to grow their game.

He left. I root for the kids in the SHU uniforms. Simple as that.

I agree that his punch initially hit Ajou and bounced off into RA's face. However it was still a punch and I doubt he was aiming at Ajou. As I stated earlier I hope Sterling does well but let's not rewrite history what happened was no accident.

Sums up Ajou's career at SH - couldn't even catch a "pass" from Gibbs.

Agreed. The concern is whether or not it was someone that still lurks in there, but I guess we'll find out.

I thought Gibbs was on his way in that lineage of really top guards we have had. He was a tremendous player, I thought.

Much too inconsistent to be put in that class.

Maybe I'm wrong here and I'm sure the headline is to grab attention, but why would Gibbs be bitter at Seton Hall? They provided a landing spot after things didn't work out at Texas, a chance to play in front of his family/friends, free scholarship, and from what I can tell, every opportunity to showcase he's skills. To my knowledge he wasn't kicked off the team or asked not to come back. He chose to finish his career at a more visible and prominent basketball school to better position himself for a career after college. Good luck to him. As for the off the court stuff, he was a 21-year old senior, not a 18-year old freshmen, he should have learned to get over it by now.

This pretty much sums up how I feel. Gibbs provided us with some great moments, particularly in the 1st Nova game last year. None of it amounted to anything, unfortunately. I didn't want to see him leave, but now that he has I think it was probably for the best for all involved all things considered.

FWIW - I think Gibbs line was 12 points, 1 rebound and 0 assists last night. He hasn't been playing very well since UConn's schedule has improved.

For those curious here's his stats at UConn compared to those at SHU.

Crazy that he was only a 70% FT shooter here. I know he tends to start out on fire and then for whatever reason can't hit one to save his life as the season wears on, but I'd like to see his 1st and 2nd half splits because they must be much more pronounced than I had thought. Seems like at the beginning of '13/'14 he was getting more than half his points from the line thanks to the rule change.

Gibbs shooting early in the season was phenomenal. And given our anemic offense, he made tons of difficult shots in traffic. As for fts, in his two years here, he got the yips for a few games both years.

Yea, I remember the speculation here about why he had so much trouble from the line. Some thought it was fatigue but agree that it was mostly mental.

Who was a better transfer/recruit then? Mobley? Auda? Teague? No. It could very well be Delgado or Whitehead in the end but too early to make that call yet.
I'd be surprised if AD, IW, KC or even DR (maybe even Ish or Nzei) aren't better all around players than Gibbs was once all is said and done, if none of them make the mistake of leaving before they're ready. Agree, too soon to say though.

You'd be surprised if all 5 of our sophomores aren't 2nd team all Big East players by their junior year (next year)?

No, I just don't put that much value on who gets voted all BE, particularly 2nd team. I just see IW, KC and AD as potentially being better all around players than SG was. He scored a lot of points, which is obviously important. But IW, KC and DR, from what I've observed, are on pace to be better all-around players as SG was. Nzei and Ish are two wild-cards, but I expect the other 3 to be better all-around than Gibbs was. With the latter two having a chance to be from the small sample size I've seen this year.

Don't forget, when you're taking about all-around players, that includes the ability to come up with clutch shots. And most college players would be hard pressed to come up with more clutch shots than Sterling did. Think about it: if it weren't for him, we would be on about ten full years without anything like fun having happened with our program. Seriously. The kid provided just about every fun, joyful moment I can think of - the kind where we could feel like a good team that mattered, even if it wound up turning to fool's gold in February.

Who cares What happened! He is gone so wish him luck or don't wish him luck. Its over and time to move on. He is not a pirate and I personally don't care what he does at UConn since he is not a pirate.
