US SDNY charging Senator Menendez & Wife

Murphy said he should resign asap.

How would his replacement be chosen?
In NJ, the office of governor appoints an interim. The governor can also decide on holding a special election for the remainder of the term. Christie did this upon Lautenberg passing. Jeff Chiesa was appointed the senator. A special election was held prior to the general election that year. Christie believed the people of the state should have say in their representation.

I predict senate ethics panel which is 3 dem 3 rep will recommend expulsion to the full body and he will resign before the vote

I think he is so confident of his not doing anything illegal he will fight like hell to remain in office and it is doubtful dems will have stones to expel him.

He was still an arrogant a-hole at the presser yesterday. Booker now joins Fetterman and Casey. Where is Chuckie and Gillebrand?

He thinks he is above the law and making that speech yesterday only will make things worse for him as he is backing himself into a corner.

Well it would be dems and rep...75 votes needed...many dem senators have messaged for his resignation today

I voted for him. But when we see evidence of wrongdoing, we don’t continue to support him. We acknowledge it, pull our support and believe he should resign. We offer no excuses. We don’t offer up conspiracies.

Perhaps more should do that.

Maybe it was a weak case against him last time, but it was plain to everyone who could read that he was dirty, and he still beat Hugin overwhelmingly. NJ Democrats have no high moral ground to preach from. Instead, you decry Trump and his supporters yet vote for this long time criminal.

And, apropos of nothing, shameful of this guy to play the race card in the face of some pretty damning evidence.

If Menendez does run for re-election, I am certain that there will be several candidates running against him in the Dem Primary not just Kim. You can also count on Gottheimer & Sherrill being in the race. Menendez chances of winning the primary are minimal.

Remember the last time he ran in 2018 he had only one opponent Lisa McCormick (?), a political unknown with no money nor campaign yet she still got 40% of the vote.

As to the GOP candidate just remember they will be running on the same line as Trump in 2024 which is not very advantageous here in New Jersey.

Agree with this. Even if Menendez somehow won the primary, he'd still win against a Republican , that's the sad state of affairs we are in.

Hudson county about 10 percent of the state. If primaried by how many? The more that primary him the more it splits the vote

The point is, please - Dems - don't give me the "they go low, we go high" nonsense. You voted for this guy when there was a lot of smoke last time around, because you couldn't stomach voting for a Republican (who was pretty milquetoast).

Long time criminal? What are those allegations? If you are looking at the facts surrounding the indictment the first time around, not only the case was weak, it was weak because the allegations were not a crime. Taking trips from a 20 year old friend does not amount to a bribe or a quid pro quo. If true, then Clarence Thomas would be indicted.

And, if you want to make the comparison to Trump, please do so. When there are overwhelming allegations of a crime in which there are against Menendex, he should be gone and go to jail. Just like the overwhelming evidence that Trump committed crimes in which he should go to jail as well. Let them both be bunkmate with each other. That would be a fit ending for both of these two. but one didn't try to overthrow an election and started an insurrection. He is just your ordinary corrupt greedy politician.

Bingo. I find it to be discrimination to go after him and all the other greedy politicians just point the arrow at him so nobody looks at them. I'm a believer the conduct and transacations of these elected politicians should be intensely audited every year. Right now people are getting their rocks off on nabbing one or two poiticians when there are plenty of these ordinary corrupt greedy politicians. There's never a solution that tries to make sure this never happens again.

Well, I don't think this type of corruption is common among members of Congress. The allegations against Menendez are egregious. The evidence of having $500,000 in cash at your home is damning. His excuse that he withdrew this over the years for emergencies is downright laughable. This reckons back to Abscam when the FBI caught up Congressman literally stuffing money into their suit pockets on video.

And you can never stop greed. It is human nature. However, when this type of criminality is found, it must be punished severely to deter others. Even then, it won't solve it.

Don't you think agree oversight should be at the highest levels when it comes to the people in control of our government? Politicians should be at the top of the list when it comes to having their numbers scrutinized.

We can all say there should be oversight and members of Congress do indeed have reporting financial disclosure requirements. But what type of oversight would have caught this? It is an old fashion bribe of cash for favors. It is not like he put this into his bank account and there was unusual banking transactions where some oversight would have caught this.

I am actually interested in finding out who tipped off the FBI on this.

Please are you telling me there aren't people who know who our politicians are communicating with. Do you think Booker doesn't know the sleeveballs Menendez is hanging with and vice versa. I hate to say it but it's probably like steroids in baseball, if you're on the inside you have a good clue whats going on.

Menendez has hung around with unsavory characters forever. Melgen was a dirtbag.

Just because he wasn’t found guilty doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing in the edge. His above the law arrogance just tells me he just didn’t do this for the first time.

Exactly. Trafficking was a pretty serious allegation, too (though not an indictment), and the good Dr. went to jail, but Menendez skates. In retrospect (for some), you could imagine the probability of him taking part in criminal behavior before his last re-election was somewhat high. Cern would have us believe he only became a criminal in the last couple of years?

I've said this before: I did not vote for Trump x 2 and he was a known, local "small-time" criminal for years. Menendez committed his crimes while an elected US Senator, and was re-elected last time by a good number of people who cast aspersions on anyone who voted for Trump. I'm in favor of ANY politician losing their job, pension, and freedom if convicted of jailable offenses.

When you have to hold your nose to vote down one column on the ticket, this is what happens sometimes, and anyone who voted for him, given what was swirling around last time, can't claim ignorance.

Addendum: what is really sad is that NJ used to be a state that would drum a candidate out of office, whatever the affiliation (see: Jim Florio) , if called for.

In the last 5 years, NJ re-elected this bum rather than see a Republican get the seat, and we re-elected Murphy, who suggested that if you don't like high taxes, you could leave. Only thirty years ago, both of them would have been shown the door.
