A 29-team basketball conference might be a tad unwieldy.
I suspect there's a good chance this doesn't end well for Seton Hall. Those who think we should move down to the MAAC (or worse) might get their wish.

Why? Isn’t it better to be at least competitive with student athletes than be an embarrassment with pro athletes, most of whom won’t even make it to the G league?
I’d assume that if they were looking to make cuts, the argument is there for us, DePaul, and Butler. Like you said— being an original Big East team keeps us in the conversation.
I don't know. Would the Florida Marlins or Chicago White Sox consider moving down to AAA?

This is based on the safe assumption that UNC and UVA, with maybe Georgia Tech depart for the B1G, Utah and Colorado also go to the B1G and somehow the B1G can convince A&M to get away from Texas in the SEC or Notre Dame goes B1G....
If the ACC sheds 3 to 6 schools, the merger makes sense.. .notice that the article mentions the potential of a Duke vs UConn matchup in basketball, but doesn't mention UNC.....

C) Merges with the Big East
D) MAYBE Cal and Stanford return to their roots with UCLA, USC in the B1G as well.
That gives a league total of 14 ACC and 11 Big East. Leagues of 24 to 30 is the ultimate future of high level competitive "college" sports content for TV viewers. Not everyone enjoys watching NFL football and NBA basketball on an ongoing basis.
I am fully convinced that 22 to 24 teams in a Big East ACC merger with 4 divisions or 2 split pods depending on football and hoops would be eaten up by TV viewers from late November through March in hoops and late August to November/December in football.
FOX and NBC all need places to show sports and the costs of the NBA and NFL are just too expensive.....this is a more attractive alternative and would work 100% IMO.

You didn't mention Fla State and Clemson. No way would they be a part of this.
NJHawk has been a favorite poster of mine for years and I have never hoped more that he was right. And deleting the two schools SPK notes below makes me far more comfortable that this could work out well for us.
I certainly prefer this to the alternative (not being invited). But, wow, a 24-team league sounds awful.
College BBall is dead and buried. Time to pull the plug on the whole thing.
In many ways, this would be the best of all possible worlds for UConn. I don't see it happening though.
It is remarkable that Duke is just not a valued property in the current landscape.
College basketball will have to wait until college football breaks away from the NCAA and forms it's own 32 school league. The money in football is so much bigger that no moves can be made in BB until that is resolved.
If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around to hear, does it still make a sound? The MAAC, NEC or America East is that tree.
Presume the scenario is we are left by the wayside and one of the above is our landing spot.
The first thing you have to do is find a way to replace the revenue (or a sizable portion of it) that will go away. You still have to fund 14 sports but now you have little in media rights to do so. Not to mention a corresponding drop in ticket revenue as we won't have to worry about filling the Rock either. SPK probably knows the numbers but I'm figuring it's at least $5 million a year.
Are you going to increase your donations to help support the program? If you are, good on you. I'd bet many will lessen their support because the quality of basketball (and opponents) will drop off. I know after spending more than 40 years watching us play St. John's, Georgetown and Villanova that I'll not get a thrill out of home-and-homes with Sacred Heart and Mount St. Mary's.
Chances are we'll be like the other schools in those conferences that spend the early part of the schedule taking 20-plus point beatings for a nice paycheck. You know, all those schools many here look down upon now.
Where you see competitiveness, I see irrelevance.
