Valparaiso dropping Crusaders name, mascot, logos

It's a good move. Groups that the schools doesn't want to be associated with have co-opted the mascot. They are being proactive. Good for them. No one is forcing them to do anything.

Come on man. You know how many names we can play that game with? The “Patriots” has been co-opted by certain nutjob groups. The “Panthers” has some negative history. We can go on and on. No one would ever associate the school with any nutjob organization that uses the phrase Crusaders.

Right, there are lots of names that could be considered problematic, and every organization makes that decision. In this case, Valpo decided this was the direction they want to go.

This doesn't hurt/effect anyone on this board either way.

I did see a few days ago that there was an article written about TB Buccaneers' name. Some mention of glorifying Pirates. Dum dee dum dum.
by some idiot lady who had a giant tattoo of a buccaneer on her arm... well maybe not an idiot she literally had her phd in "pirates of the atlantic"

It doesn’t hurt anyone in a particularized, direct manner. But the sentiment is part of a trend and thought-process that is absolutely hurting society as a whole. Either the name is so offensive and harmful that it matters, or it doesn’t. And if it doesn’t, we should be focusing on important stuff, not the BS. Too many people increasingly devote their time and energy to worrying about this nonsense, when they could focus it instead on real issues, or real ways to make things better.

And I’d say to anyone so concerned about the name “Crusaders”, and “rectifying” the harm caused by that “problematic” name (or other names of mascots or institutions): take all that energy and all that desire to rectify problems, and come spend some time with me at Covenant House. You won’t get Twitter or Instagram points, it won’t involve posting morally superior messages on social media that people can click buttons and “like”, but it will involve a real tangible way you can help address one of society’s problems.

Actually, it's marketing.

Names change. Buildings, teams, etc. What's cretinous is the reaction here. This doesn't hurt anyone, especially other teams fans.

I don't fault you, but I don't think you see what's happening. There is a marxist-style assault going on, which seeks to erase history, to implement rigid, politically driven rules that are based on concepts of class warfare and are ever changing, and to sanitize whatever offends marxist sensibilities. Those who don't go along with the new totalitarianism are canceled, fired, ostracized, shunned, labeled, ridiculed, criminalized, destroyed financially, and possibly imprisoned. This is being done to both institutions and individuals. It essentially is not about marketing.

How long before all teams names , mascots and logos are eliminated because someone finds them offensive and what will replace them . Numbers so the NY Giants will become team 23 , the Jets team 24 , the Mets team 84 , Seton Hall team 157 . Sounds silly but on this very slippery slope of censorship we’re on who knows where it stops.

Majority needs to step up and say - no more. Everybody needs to grow a set and stop hiding in the bushes.

Love watching the local mid majors on Friday nights. I think I still like the small gyms and their atmospheres. Was watching St. Francis v. LIU recently, and learned that LIU is no longer the Blackbirds? Is that also a recent change?

Well said! It's not about each individual case like this. It's about the collective effect these seemingly small drips are having on society. They've accumulated enough that now the bucket is overflowing.

Having an opinion is cretinous ? A small number of people in this country are pushing for the termination of everything that is the least bit controversial in our culture, we're eliminating everything in our history that might offend some. This mentality leaves the door open for cancelation of everything that a small group deems offensive. Pirates were marauders, thieves and bad people in general, yet, Seton Hall represents none of what an actual Pirate was known for. This is my opinion and it certainly isn't cretinous.

The point is, until it does impact you...they’re coming

Father, not for nothing, but when you start sounding like Tucker Carlson, it might be time to reboot.

Thinking of this brings into question another murderous group. The Vikings. Is the Minnesota NFL franchise next in line for a change?

I totally agree. An institution makes a decision about itself --no one held a gun to their head--and we have people seeing this as a serious threat to the future of society. Ridiculous.

Tell us how it isn't then, oh wise one. Do you not see this happening everywhere? It's the cumulative effect, not any one particular decision. If you can't see that, well, you're just blinded by the ideology that brings these decisions about.

How do you know that a majority of people said that they no longer wanted the mascot name? The article states that they have been having these discussions for years. They also said the alumni board, the student senate and University officials all said they wanted a different name. That sounds like a majority to me and frankly the students/alumni/officials of Valpo are the only people who should be making the decision regarding this because it is their school. If this only bothered ten people at the school, they probably wouldn't give this idea any further thought.

Why are some people on this board so afraid of this decision. It is a mascot and it is not even your alma mater Nobody voted to take away your house or your money. I do agree that in the grand scheme of things there are other social issues that need to be addressed, but if the school wants to change their mascot because they don't like what it represents, it is not a big deal.

I think the sentiment is because it’s an overall trend, not something specific to Valparaiso.

And by the way, a big part of that trend is to seek out and find the worst of everything, no matter which side of any trend/issue you are coming from, no matter how flimsy it may be.
