you need to holiday shop but the store has a paper on the door saying dont come in if you display signs of covid or a positive test etc... you think 9/10 people are listening to that sign?

Yes

People acting with stupidity has never been a reason to shut down everyday life and everyday activities. Some recent statistic reflected that an enormous percentage of cases arise from indoor transmission between families and friends. We cannot regulate against that and the lockdowns and restrictions that have destroyed small businesses in certain parts of the country (including here) will do absolutely nothing to stop cases from accumulating over the next few months with the winter season upon us. We need to keep moving forward as best we can in a reasonable and common sense manner. People should be allowed to go to dinner or bars indoors with some workable restrictions involved so more lives aren’t destroyed. If you don’t want to assume the risk, don’t go. As far as college hoops goes, these kids and the coaches want to play. They should continue to plow forward in a common sense manner because why deprive them of that?

The entire premise for restrictions was the fallacy of asymptomatic spread. Studies in recent months have shown that this kind of spread does not occur, contrary to what the people pushing the panic were selling us in March.

A recently published study from Wuhan screened 10 million residents in May. Only 300 of them had asymptomatic virus and NONE of them were infectious. Close contacts of these folks also tested negative.

That study does not conclude that asymptomatic spread doesn’t happen. It does, and many other studies confirm that to be the case though appears that “presymptomatic” is more than actual asymptomatic. A couple studies showed that you are most contagious right before you develop symptoms.

The Wuhan study essentially shows that the lockdown in Wuhan shut down transmission entirely. Our shutdowns were nothing compared to what they did in Wuhan.

Some people have had a PCR test show as positive for months after their initial diagnosis. Would seem much more likely that is what happened in Wuhan since this study occurred about a month after the lockdown and the virus hasn’t been spreading there.

FWIW, I would not put much credence in any study coming out of China.

I'm glad we didn't do anything like Wuhan did, because that would be the end of America as we know it. As it happened, we came and continue to come pretty close to a dangerous cliff when it comes to freedom, liberty and the rights of our citizens.

Yeah, I’m not arguing that we should have. Just saying, that study did not show that asymptomatic spread is a “fallacy”. Many other studies support that transmission without symptoms is and has been occurring.

I was exchanging emails last night with a colleague in Grand Caymans (Health City Hospital) who is also a Xavier grad. His response to my question about how the virus has hit the island nation.

"Two deaths and a few hundred cases of asymptomatic. Most are from those doing the 14 day mandatory quarantine upon entering the island.

We have, because we ordered a lot a head of time, lots of the vaccine and will start in January to vaccinate our ppl, with priority first persons as in most countries.

Our government did a fantastic job of shutting it down by locking us down in the right way and we are blessed. We have had normal lives since August, working with mask in most businesses since June.

Congrats on the win, and please stay safe".

On the one hand, that’s fantastic because they acted swiftly in the beginning (something we didn’t do here) and looks like it’s worked well including a controlled 14-day quarantine upon entry.

On the other hand, easier to do on a small, less populous island nation.

Agreed. I believe the Caymans population is about 60k and majority on Grand Cayman. But as they are a financial center, the airport is quite busy though with a lot of international travelers.

Having been there a few times and through government connections I will say they are very good at putting controls in place. Unrelated, but their gun control strategy have worked quite well. Essentially, if you are caught within unregistered gun it’s an automatic 10 years in prison. They’ve also done some creative things with tort reform to advance the development of a healthcare system there that has a far reach into the Caribbean and beyond.

Same reason why I laugh at people who say, look at New Zealand, they did it right! Much easier to control this in an island nation with roughly the population of Alabama than it is in the US with 330 million people and hundreds of international flights a day.
