Pirates Sweep San Francisco for First 2023 Victory​

IRVING, CALIF. – Senior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high eight kills and freshman Rylee Nelson (Mazeppa, Minn.) collected a match-high 19 digs as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept San Francisco, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18), for their first victory of the young 2023 season.

The victory improves The Hall to 1-1 at the season-opening UCI Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine. Earlier in the day, the Pirates fell in three sets to New Mexico.

Lucas was an offensive force, collecting eight kills, only one attack error and a .412 attack percentage. Freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hi.) had seven kills and four digs.

Nelson guided a strong Pirates' defense with a career-best 19 digs. Senior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had eight kills to go with 16 assists.

SET 1:
Leading 7-6, the Pirates scored five straight points, and a service ace by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey), gave The Hall a 12-6 advantage. A kill by Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) put The Hall on top, 19-14, but the Dons responded with three straight points to cut their deficit to two and force a Pirates' timeout. San Francisco rallied to tie the set at 23, but a Dons' attack error put The Hall in set point and a kill by Lucas won the opener for the Pirates, 25-23. The Hall's defense held the Dons to a .000 attack percentage in the first set.

SET 2:
Seton Hall mostly dominated the second set, recording a season-high .226 attack percentage. Down 2-1 early, the Pirates scored six straight and never trailed again. A service ace by Roberts-Navarro gave The Hall a commanding 15-7 lead, and from there, the Pirates never led by fewer than four points for the remainder of the set. The Pirates' final three points came on kills by Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) in route to a 25-19 victory.

SET 3:
Leading 12-10, the Pirates went on an 8-2 run to grab a huge 20-12 lead. San Francisco scored three straight late to cut their deficit to 23-18, but a block by Lucas and Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) put The Hall in match point, and a service ace by Nelson gave the match to the Pirates.

Pirates Drop Season-Opener against New Mexico​

IRVING, CALIF. – Senior Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a double-double and freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hi.) had a dazzling collegiate debut, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in the season opener to New Mexico, 3-0 (15-25, 25-27 13-25) at the UCI Invitational on Friday.

Jakubowski collected her team-leading 36th career double-double with team-highs of 15 assists and 13 digs, while Roberts-Navarro led the offense with a team-high nine kills, all in the second and third sets. Roberts-Navarro had only two attack errors and a team-best .318 attack percentage.

Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) made her triumphant return to the court after missing a year with a knee injury. She had six kills and six assists. Teammate Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) also had six kills.

Freshman Rylee Nelson (Mazeppa, Minn.) also made her collegiate debut and had 11 digs in two sets played.

SET 1:
A Walsh kill gave The Hall an early 5-3 lead, but New Mexico struck back with a 9-1 run to take a 12-6 advantage in the opening set. The Hall cut their deficit to 13-8 on a kill by Matheny, but the Lobos scored the next four points to take a commanding 17-8 lead. They went on to win the first set, 25-15, after holding the Pirates to only .020 attacking.

SET 2:
The second set was a significantly closer affair featuring 10 ties and five lead changes. Trailing 14-9, The Hall methodically rallied and a block by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) cut its deficit to just one point, 17-16. After New Mexico extended its lead to four, Roberts-Navarro caught fire late, and collected three kills among Seton Hall's next six points to put The Hall in set point, 24-23. Ultimately however, the Pirates couldn't close out the Lobos, and fell, 27-25.

SET 3:
A New Mexico attack error cut The Hall's deficit to 8-6 in set three, but the Logos bounced back with a 7-2 run to grab a 15-8 advantage. A kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates their 11th point, but the Lobos finished the match with five of the last seven points to win set three, 25-13. The Pirates had their best attack percentage of the match in the final stanza, but allowed New Mexico to fire at a .333 rate.

Pirates Sweep Host UCI to Cap Strong Opening Weekend​

IRVING, CALIF. – Three Pirates collected a double-double, led by graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) who had a match-high 16 kills to go with 13 rebounds and the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept tournament host UC Irvine, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24), on Saturday.

The Pirates close out their season-opening weekend with a 2-1 record after victories over San Francisco and UC Irvine at the UCI Invitational. Matheny and freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hi.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the tournament finale, Matheny erupted for her fourth career double-double, but her first in well-over a year as she sat most of the 2022 season with a knee injury. Matheny had 16 kills, only two attack errors and a match-high .452 attack percentage.

The Pirates' setters also had strong matches, both collecting double-doubles. Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) finished with team-highs of 22 assists, 17 digs and four blocks to go with six kills. Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) notched 16 assists and 12 kills. Also of note, Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had 10 kills and only one attack error along with four blocks.

SET 1:
With the score tied at four, the Pirates scored five of the next six points to take a 9-5 advantage. A kill by Matheny grew the Pirates' lead to as many as eight points, 20-12. The Anteaters cut The Hall's deficit to 23-16, but a UC Irvine service error put The Hall in set point, and a Lucas kill gave the Pirates a 25-16 first-set win. Seton Hall had 19 kills and only two attack errors for a season-high .415 attack percentage in the opening frame.

SET 2:
The second set was back-and-forth early on, but trailing 13-12, The Hall scored six straight, and two consecutive kills by Roberts-Navarro gave it an 18-13 advantage. Leading 23-17, a block by Lucas and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) put The Hall in set point, and two points later, a kill by Matheny won set two for the Pirates, 25-18.

SET 3:
Although the Pirates led for the majority of the third set, neither team took a lead of greater than three points in the early goings. Trailing 17-15, UC Irvine scored four straight to take the lead and force a Seton Hall timeout. Down 21-18, it was the Pirates' turn to rally. The Hall scored four of the next five points to tie the score at 22. A kill by Matheny staved off an Anteaters' set point and tied the set at 24. A UCI attack error put The Hall in match point, and a Lucas kill handed the match to the Pirates, 26-24.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Matheny had a double-double with a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs. She only had two attack errors and a team-best .452 attack percentage.
  • Klungel had team-highs of 22 assists and 17 digs to go with four blocks and six kills.
