We didn't want to do this

The article takes a blatant shot at Willard as the cause of team chemistry problems, and Sina and Gibb's departure. A shot that he richly deserves.

We didn't want to do it this, but it was just a tough situation," said Temple Gibbs, Sterling's dad. "It was something he felt he had to do for his state of mind.

Glad to see Carino reporting this objectively by mentioning the coaching staff, although much more substance could have been added to this I'm sure.

Temple Gibbs took the same tact as Mergin Sina, by alluding to issues within the program. At the time Sina did it I felt like he could have taken the high road and offered up a different quote. But now the more it gets out there the better IMO. WTF is going on with this program and administration. They are completely inept at everything, but absolutely proficient in keeping secrets from getting out. Maybe Deadspin takes another run at them.

Since there were also chemistry problems before our heralded freshman class arrived, maybe Gibbs & Sina had something to do with it.

Perfect summation by Carino. It's not hard at all to read between all the lines here. Criticize him if you want for his transfer history (all he ever really did was come back home; he only verballed to Maryland and never attended), but we're losing a good kid, the loser in a locker room culture that will set our program back a minimum of five years, and that's being optimistic. Just when it mattered the most, just when we really needed to establish ourselves in a new league that is, itself, trying to establish itself in the new hoops landscape, Seton Hall basketball fall FLAT on its face. It let us down, it let the university community down, and it let the Big East down.

Very true, but only 1 real constant the last 5 years many of which have been filled with such "issues". I don't know what happened, and I definitely don't put it all at the feet of Isaiah or any other freshman. This crap has happened over, and over, and over, regardless of who is on the roster.

They weren't chemistry problems, per se, they were issues those players had with the way the program was (not being) run by the head coach. That same ineffectual leadership helped completely torpedo this season.

I wholeheartedly agree with all except that Gibbs, to me, is not a good kid. He's too damn chippy and he punched an opponent when he was down for no reason. That's a deep down instinct and that's not GOOD,
If we're going to be at the bottom of the league we might as well have kids we can be proud of.
The Canaris guys immediately come to mind..

Most of us are not really surprised by his leaving. Kind of sucks, however, that Gibbs waited so long to make his announcement and his telling the staff he had no plans to leave. But i guess he had his reasons.

"The feeling, as expressed by those in the upperclassmen's camp, was that they were never empowered to lead by the coaching staff. In October Willard declined to name captains, instead going with "game captains" even though Gibbs and senior Brandon Mobley seemed like obvious choices."

There was a thread about this after it was announced. I said it was a dumb decision then and clearly it mattered to the players. I'm sure Mobley felt the same way. Just another stupid decision by the most incompetent coach in college basketball.

What I want to know is where is the leadership from Lyons , or maybe It's Hobbs , and what's being done to make the changes that will get this program going in the right direction. Candidly our men's basketball program seems totally leaderless and there appears to be a vacuum of someone in the athletic department or in the upper levels of the administration who has the authority or the will to fix what is clearly broken.

Nothing has changed since yesterday. Gibbs transferring has been a poorly kept secret. We are just reacting to the news becoming official. We have leaders, you just don't like them. I do wonder if someone will give Gibbs the standard - "good guy and we wish him the best" quote but I will not be bothered if none is forthcoming.

I don't care what anybody says, but Sterling basically provided whatever highlights we have had over the past two years. Now a team that was labeled as "deep" at the guard position, is woefully short at that position.
This coming season.... And I'm afraid many to come..... Will be a disaster.
Well, except for Fln, who I'm sure still has us as a top 3 team!
They just keep giving me more and more good reasons to not renew my tickets....

Knowknow
If you think Willard is a leader then you and I will never be on the same page. A leader is one who is respected , admired and looked up to by those whom he has been chosen to lead and the issue is not whether I like Willard or not it's that I firmly believe he is incapable of leading this program to success. His record the last three years coupled with his inability to control his lockerroom speak for themselves.

The man is an awful coach. What do you people not see?? He will be gone after next year

So our starting backcourt transfers out, there are whispers of issues all year, we lose 9 of 10 to end the year and show no effort, but we have leaders.

Here's hoping.

I keep saying next year is MUCH TO LATE. We had our chance but this supposed great AD who because he was nice and granted access to certain people is mediocre. HE has only done what any somewhat competent AD would do. If he had any balls he would demand a change here. That's what a read AD Would do. The rest of the school. not surprised. We got on a miracle streak with PJ and the last 21 years 3 NCAAS. No excuse for this. By the way never take what any player tweets seriously. Changes one day to the next. Big joke. The entire staff is just not right. Hill s not the same as he was long ago. Tiny what the hell did he do. I know about IW etc. even Sha is a disappointment. have no closer at all but our rep is one in which no decent player wants to be here unless we are his last resort. Even Soffer we were his second choice. changed his mind after committing to Loyola because he has relatives in Metuchen. BOR ESTEBAN ALL LIGHTWEIGHTS.

Thinking the same thing...Lyons should have his picture on a milk carton. I had cut him a lot of slack, but the only comment about the men's BB team since the end of the year has been from Hobbs.

Kevin's their man. That's the leadership.
