We won the game

having 2 fouls to give up in last 2 possessions and used them terribly..that's my complaint..but you know what..don't give a sh$t..we won!

My thoughts:

1. Whitehead - excellent game, no complaints.
2. Carrington - hurt us with his horrendous three point shooting but had an overall okay game.
3. Gordon - Besides his two missed FTs at the end of the game, good game for him. If he's our best defender, why wasn't he on Garret all day?
4. Free Throws - Just gross.
5. Three Point Shooting - We had an off day. Nothing you can do about it.
6. Singh - If you're going to exclusively camp out on the three point line, you should probably have a decent 3 pt. %.
7. Willard - Overall okay. I was happy with his Technical as the refs were just straight hot garbage in the first half. The end game coaching was terrible. You foul right away if you have the fouls to give. Made absolutely no sense.

Agree on all counts but Carrington took wide open threes but just missed.

I think the plan was to foul, but they screwed up the execution big-time. Just like Garrett screwed up on his intentionally missed third FT.

A survive and advance kind of game. Lots of video to watch in the state-of-the art video room.

We won a game where:
  • We shot terribly from 3 and Depaul shot well and made tough shots
  • Missed game clinching free throws, 6 of 7, at the end of the game
  • Played without Delgado for last 8+ minutes and Whitehead for 5+ minutes of first half
  • Entire 2nd half without Desi who has been our most consistent scorer recently
To me that is a sign of progress because we definitely would have lost this type of game in the past. Also, today Whitehead was really good and showed why he was such a highly rated recruit. Tough shots when we needed them, great assists, and hard defense until he got tired in last 5 minutes of the game.

1) Great plan by Leito. Pack the defense in and force Seton Hall to hit three's. Expect to see this often as Big East play begins.

2) tip to the hat to Willard by sitting Desi for Desi talking back at him. Willard has to be in total control something that has not done in the past.

3). End of game, 3 seconds left with 2 or 3 fouls to give before the one and one begins, you must foul DePaul to tick time off the clock. No reason whatsoever to foul there. To compound the mistake, Gordon fouls when shooting. Lucky to survive here. This could have been a disaster.

4) need to improve the three point shooting and foul shooting. This is going to catch up to this team eventually.

His shot was flat all day. The only jumper I remember him looking comfortable shooting was the three he hit from the corner. He got air under it and the result was positive.

Decent offensive game, but would have been much better if he hit some open shots.

Fortunately Whitehead picked up the slack having possibly his best offensive game of the year.

Gordon was supposed to foul as soon as Garrett crossed 1/2 court. The foul should be given with as little time on the clock as possible so that even if the player makes two FTs there is very little time left in case of a steal on the ensuing inbound or after our team takes its foul shots. Obviously you don't foul while the guy is in the act of shooting. In this case we had more than one foul to give. Team just didn't execute properly.

With 3 seconds left, you can't foul. Terrible decision by Willard
?????????????

We had two fouls to give. Of course you foul on the inbound pass that far from the basket. Do it twice if possible but do it quickly so as not to allow a shot by the offensive player.

Gordon messed up and was a man about it afterwards taking the blame.

with 3 seconds left?? Are you crazy? As soon as Garrett gets fouled he's throwing it up & will get 3 shots. With only 3 secs left, put a man on the inbounder, play good d, force a contested 3

Did Willard's strategy work? Yes or no? Just answer the question. Thanks

Huh?

There's two ways to foul in that situation.

1. Immediately upon the inbound catch. No way a player is going to be able to attempt a shot in that situation.

OR

2. As soon as a player drops his head and dribbles as Garrett did. The defender could and should have fouled him at that point.

Now to answer your question. There's a big difference between strategy and result.

The strategy could be perfect but the execution not.

Clearly Gordon messed up twice as he admitted. He was suppose to foul quickly. He did not. He was then not suppose to foul near the buzzer as Garrett was taking a shot from the arc. He did.

The strategy was fine. The execution was not. It shouldn't be that hard to understand.

You're welcome.

You articulated my thoughts exactly. We won a game despite some obvious headwinds. This probably wouldn't have happened in any of the recent seasons. Got to love the character of the team and the development of the coach.

Another factor was the early start. A great caller on Hall Line described it as a Twilight Zone game. I agree. I have never liked the early starts and that goes all the way back to Jim Bad News Barnes and Ernie "No D" DiGregorio thumping the Chris Rzonca team in the early seventies

As Willard said after the game and I agree, last season this would have been an L.

Young team is growing before our eyes. We just needed to be patient.

Still far from a finished product though.

You are the nutty one mjs. If you watch the replay, Garrett is dribbling with 1 or 2 seconds left. Could definitely have fouled. You don't just push a guy but you defend over aggressively

You foul in that situation 100% of the time. 2 fouls to give, that is basketball 101. For someone to criticize Willard for that game plan shows (1) they have limited basketball knowledge, or (2) their hatred for the coach is so severe they are looking to blame him for anything.

His plan backfired!!!!! Great strategy coach!!! Not to mention by our senior who was brought in to be a leader right after he missed 2 fts which would have sealed the game!!! Great job coach!!

You really have no idea what you're talking about.

Yeah you really should stop. Made no sense the first time everyone read it, and to have you continue with your rampage, well... Just silly.
You don't like Willard... We got it. Now you're good for the rest if the season

If you don't like Willard that's fine, but to criticize him for instructing his team to foul with 4 seconds to play, up 3, with two fouls to give makes you sound like a troll.

mjs is a St. Johns fan. He's having a tough year. By the way, has anyone heard from Pirate Ed lately?

We may have won with a better point spread if Desi was able to play in the critical second half. So be it we won without him. Whiotehead was brilliant in the second half, and that was the difference In getting the W vs a lossIMO.

no continuation in college so its easy to foul there. ugly win, but we overcame alot and had guys step up when others were having trouble.
