Where Will Our Portal Guys End Up?

With so much angst about lack of portal success, it might be a diversion to shift some our internal agita to where our 7-25 portal candidates are going to end up playing in 2025/2026. The common thread is they all have inflated perceptions of their "worth." Maybe some teams employ the "reach" strategy and hope they suddenly find their games.

I think they'll all find some level of interest and where their talents match up. Gus Bus at Vermont is a perfect spot. Coleman at Okie State not so much.

I question Dual, Orakafor and Prince. Something tells me they'll end up as bench pieces or down a level. Or Tuomi - the Oslo Otters are calling.

What say all of you?

If I’m a smart team I’d buy low on Dual. I think there’s some upside with him. I’ll guess he ends up at a HM with a smart front office.

Middleton probably lands somewhere decent because he can shoot.

The other guys are low major talents at best.

Manny Okorafor - $400k - High major bench or Mid major starter

Scotty Middleton - $600k - High major bench or Mid major starter

Prince Aligbe - $750k - High major bench

Garwey Dual - $400k (tough to gauge with injury fears vs defensive prowess)- Mid Major

Yacine Toumi - $100k - Low Major

Gus Yalden - $100k - Vermont

Zion Harmon - Tuition - Low major to D2/3

Isaiah Coleman - $1.75M -Ok St

I think they are looking to go to a program with a better record too. It will be interesting to see what success if any they have at their new schools.

No way a rising senior that has career numbers of 2.7/2.2 gets 400K. Jerry's review of someone who has no aptitude for offense, defense and rebounding is probably the harshest thing I have ever seen him write. Can't score, D up or board, othert than that, he's solid!

"Coleman at Okie State not so much. "

If ---IF---- he is getting $1.75 mil per, it is a great place for him.

I would be shocked if the numbers above are achieved, especially Coleman and Prince. Prince will only wind up at a HM if they are looking for a number 8 or 9 player. He couldn’t play major minutes on the worst HM team in the country. We can be in last place without the players above. Statistically, it is highly unlikely we can do worse.

My #s and thoughts were all darts being thrown in the dark. None of these guys are worth it in a vacuum of course.

I think Coleman is definitely at least 1mil. Maybe 1.75 is too high.

I think Prince could be a solid bench guy (7th player in rotation) at a good high major and if he plays any PF, bigs are at a premium which inflates his price.

The way the portal seems to work is if Scotty goes and has a year at mid major where he plays some D, shoots a good % from 3 and scores some points, he will be back ready to cash in at a high major for his senior year.

Middleton and Dual are power conference players with upside and could thrive at places that aren’t power conferences but Top-50 places like VCU, Dayton, etc.

Aligbe is a power conference backup, 10-15 MPG at most. He should drop a level down a level and he’d be decent. Same with Okorafor, a 8 MPG backup center at best.

And the way this crazy system works, if all those kids drop down a bit and perform against lesser competition, they will probably have a market at the high major level next season, even perhaps a lucrative one if the underlying numbers and metrics are solid.

Coleman got 1.2m from OSU. Scotty asked for 200k to comeback. He knows what his market value is.

outside of coleman it's a bunch of bad players on a really bad team. id expect the mid majors

I would not say they are bad players. I saw all of them have some very good games. Just not consistent and probably the system Sha runs did not fit the talent that was there. His rotations, offense, defense were not suited for the kids he brought in. Some if not all of them will probably fit in better at the next school and even excel. I wish them all well.

It’s the new way of player development.

If Shaheen wasn’t willing to pay Middleton $200K if that is what he wanted; we have significant issues with the leadership of the program and the Athletic Department.

It's a little more detailed than just that.

Ask me on the Trove.
